- This invention relates to a puller grip, especially adapted for use as a column strapper, and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and eflicient means for pulling the metal strap tightly around cleats which hold concrete column forms and the like, so that the strap may be fastened to the cleats and thereby provide a sturdy binding element to hold the form in a proper position until the concrete has set.
- Another object of the present invention is the production of a simple and efiicient puller grip which will firmly grip the metal binding strap, and which will firmly grip the cleat so as to anchor the puller grip upon the cleat while pulling the strap to a cleat encircling position.

Application June 8, 1954, Serial No. 435,209 1 Claim. (Cl. 254- 79) This invention relates to a puller grip, especially adapted for use as a column strapper, and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and eflicient means for pulling the metal strap tightly around cleats which hold concrete column forms and the like, so that the strap may be fastened to the cleats and thereby provide a sturdy binding element to hold the form in a proper position until the concrete has set.
Another object of the present invention is the production of a simple and efiicient puller grip which will firmly grip the metal binding strap, and which will firmly grip the cleat so as to anchor the puller grip upon the cleat while pulling the strap to a cleat encircling position.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim. i

By referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that 10 designates the puller grip which comprises a pair of substantially parallel jaws 11 and 12. Teeth 13 are formed upon the inner face of the jaw 11, and teeth 14 are formed upon the inner face of the jaw 12, for gripping the sides of the cleat 15, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, to anchor the puller grip. The rear ends of the jaws 11 and 12 are pivoted to the rear tie bar 16, and drag links 17 and 18 are pivqtally connected to the respective jaws 11 and 12. These links 17 and 18 extend inwardly toward each other and are pivotally connected at their inner ends to a drag bar 19. This drag bar 19 extends longitudinally between the jaws 11 and 12, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and is adapted to lie flat upon the edge of a column strapper.
The jaws 11 and 12 are inclined inwardly toward the cleat with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof at their forward ends 11 and 12*, respectively, to straddle the work or cleat 15, in a manner as shown in Figure 3, to facilitate the gripping of the opposite sides of the cleat 15 of the frame F by the teeth 13 and 14 of the jaws. This lever 23 is provided with a vise lip 25 which extends below the vise portion 22 of the link 20. The metal binding strip 26 is secured to a support, and the free end is gripped by the lever 23 to draw the strip tightly around the support, such as the frame F. When the lever 23 is swung'forwardly, the lower vise lip 25 firmly grips the metal binding strip 26 in a vise-like action, and bends the strip 26 over and against the vise portion 22. When the lever is swung in the oposite direction, the lip 25 and the shoulder 26 will be lifted out of engagement with the strip 26 to release the same.
It should be noted that the jaws 11 and 12 are arranged in spaced relation and that they are secured together by the bar 16 and drag links 17 and 18 which are mounted upon the top faces of the jaws 11 and 12, thereby defining a channel therebetween. The drag bar 19 fits longitudinally of and between the jaws, and in the channel formed therebetween for a portion of the length of the jaws, and the edge of the cleat 15 fits longitudinally of and in the remaining portion of this channel between the forward inwardly inclined ends of the jaws to hold the puller grip against lateral displacement relative to the cleat. In carrying out the invention, the cleats 15 preferably are assembled toform a frame F which is adapted to encircle a column mold M, such as is shown in Figure 7, or other type of mold, and the metal binding strip 26'is adapted to be fastened to the frame F to firmly hold the cleats 15 in :an assembled frame-like formation, as shown.
In Figure 8 there is shown a modified form of lever and puller grip connection wherein a puller grip 10 similar to the puller grip 10 is used, to one end of which is pivotally secured a link 27. This link 27 pivotally supports a clamping link member 28 similar to the link 20. A clamping or vise lever 23 is pivoted to the link member 28 by a journal pin 29, and this lever is provided with a vise lip 30 which is adapted to overlap and engage the forward face of the L-shaped bridge portion 22* similar to the link member 20. The lever 23 also is provided with a shoulder portion 31 which is adapted to overlie the top of the bridge portion 22 as it is swung forwardly, the link 28 also having forward swing movement. The metal binding strip 26 will'be crimped in a manner similar to that shown in Figure 4, as the lever 23 is swung forwardly to grip the strip and firmly hold the strip until the strip is fastened to a support such as a frame M.
It should be understood that certain detail changes in the construction and arrangement of parts maybe employed without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new is:
A puller grip for a column strapper comprising a drag bar adapted to lie fiat upon the outer edge of a column strapper cleat, a pair of spaced substantially parallel jaws mounted to extend longitudinally of and upon opposite sides of a column strapper cleat thereby defining a channel between the jaws, said jaws having forward ends,
