SAFETY RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Filed April 10, 1956 QJL I I I 7 a I Eb Six Z86 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS United States Patent SAFETY RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Samuel W. Lee, Buffalo, N. Y. Application April 10, 1956, Serial No. 577,270 2 Claims. (Cl. 51-211) This invention relates to a sharpening device for use in sharpening razor blades, and particularly razor baldes of the flexible type.
An important object of the invention is to provide a sharpening device of this character for sharpening razor blades including a body portion of cylindrical configuration, the body portion having open ends to permit a razor blade being sharpened to be held on the concaved surface of the sharpener by the fingers of the person using the sharpener.
An important object of the invention is to provide a cylindrical body having a partition formed intermediate its ends, dividing the body into an abrading section and a whetting section, the partition confining the razor blade being sharpened to the selected sharpening area, eliminating the possibility of the blade moving longitudinally through the body or to a position to injure the hand of the person holding the device and manipulating a blade over the abrasive surfaces thereof.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a sharpening device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the sharpening device Referring to the drawing in detail, the body portion of the sharpener is indicated generally by the reference character 5 and includes a cylindrical member having open ends 6 and 7 respectively.
The body portion may be constructed of any suitable material such as glass or the like, the concaved surface thereof constituting sharpening surfaces.
A partition 8 is formed integral within the body portion and divides the body portion into two separate and distinct sharpening areas.
The concaved surface of the body portion at one end of the device, is etched as by a sand blasting machine providing a rough abrasive surface 9 while the surface 10 at the other end of the body portion is smooth presenting a whetting surface for whetting the blade after it has been moved over the surface 9.
In using the sharpening device the razor blade to be sharpened is positioned in one end of the body portion 5 preferably the end of the body portion wherein the ice concaved surface is etched. The blade is now moved over the concaved surface, and owing to the curvature of the body portion, the cutting edge of the blade will be sharpened at one side. The blade is now reversed and the opposite cutting edges are brought into contact with the etched surface 9 completing the first step of sharpening the blade.
After the blade has been properly sharpened by rubbing over the surface 9, the blade is transferred to the opposite end of the body portion and moved over the comparatively smooth surface 10 whetting the blade to the proper degree of sharpness.
The partition or wall 8 will prevent the razor blade from moving from one sharpening surface to the other through the body during the sharpening operation, and therefore will guard the operators hand holding the device against being cut by a razor blade which, during the sharpening operation may move longitudinally of the body and possibly extend beyond the opposite open end of the body to injure the hand of the operator, if the partition or wall 8 were omitted.
It might be further stated that the sections of the body portion are of lengths substantially equal to the length of the conventional safety razor blade, to the end that by forcing the blade into one end of the body portion until the blade contacts the partition or wall 8, the entire cutting edge of the blade will be sharpened by moving the blade over the concaved or curved inner surface of the body portion.
Having thus described the invention, what is 1. A razor blade sharpening device comprising a hollow open ended cylinder of uniform diameter, a solid partition formed within said body portion at a point intermediate its ends, said partition extending completely across said body portion dividing the body portion into razor blade sharpening areas at the ends of said body portion, and said sharpening areas having abrasive qualities of different degrees, said partition limiting the inward endwise movement of a blade inserted into either end of the device.
2. A razor blade sharpening device comprising a hollow open ended cylinder of uniform diameter, a partition formed within said body portion at a point intermediate its ends, said partition defining in the body portion, razor blade sharpening areas at the ends of said body portion, said sharpening areas having abrasive qualities of different degrees, said partition limiting the inward endwise movement of a blade inserted into either end of the device.
