TYPE-WRITING RULER.
SPE LIFIQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,504, dated August 21, 1883.

drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of the ruler, illustrating its use. Fig: 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line m .e, i
he object of this invention is to accomplish, by means of a simple ruler, sliding guideplate, and appropriate type conveniently placed, any work now executed by the more expensive typewriters; also, to provide a convenient means for using all kinds of metal or wood type in printing addresses or other matter upon cards, envelopes, packagewrappers, posters, or show-cards, and other uses where stenciling or other methods areless practicable or desirable.
The inven ion consists in a type-writing ruler constructed as hereinaiter described and claimed.
A represents the ruler, and B is its bedplate, which is made widerthan the said ruler A, so that its side parts will project beyond the side edges of the ruler to serve as a table to support the paper while being operated upon. To the end parts of the bed-plate B' are attached upwardly-projecting pins 0, to enter holes 1) in the end parts of the ruler A,
a and serve as guides to bring the said ruler into proper position, and as guards or stops to keep the said ruler in position. Along the upper side of the side edges of the ruler A are formed raised angular flanges A, to serve as ways for the guide-plate E to slide upon. The upper part of the sliding plate E is bent over at an angle to fit and slide upon the angular edge A of the ruler A. Upon the end of the plate E is formed, at right angles with the plate itself, an outwardly-projecting flange, E, to serve as an accurate guide in using the types. Upon one or both of the angular flanges A is formeda scale of division-marks, as shown in Fig. l, to serve as a gage in printing, and also to adapt the ruler to serve as a rule when desired alone.
(No model.)
In using the implement the ruler A is raised upon or removed from the guide-pins O, the paper to be printed or marked is placed upon the bed-plate B, and the ruler A is returned to its place and pressed down or held down with ordinary rubber bands upon the said paper. The type of the" first letter of the name or other word to be formed upon the paper is in the right angle between the side edge of the ruler A and the end flange, E, of the sliding plate E, and is pressed down upon the paper. The type is then restored to its place and the type of the next letter is taken, inked, used, and restored to its place, and so on until the desired name, word or words, or other mark has been formed upon the paper, the sliding plate E being moved forward after each type has been used such a distance, according to the gagingmarks 011 the raised'angular edge, that the proper or desired space will be left between the letters, figures, or other marks formed upon the paper. For printing more than one line the paper is drawn forward the desired space, and the line is started, according to the gage, exactly as desired, and so on for any number of lines.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut- 1. In a type-writing ruler, the combination, with the bed-plate 13, having guidepins G, of the ruler A, having guide-holes D, substantially as herein shown anddescribed, whereby the paper to be marked can be securely held while being operated upon, asset forth.
2. In atype-writing ruler, the combination, with the bed-plate B and the ruler A, having raised angular flanges A, of the angular plate E, having end flange, E, substgptiallv as herein shown and described, -whreby the type can be accurately used, as set forth.
3. In a type-writing ruler, the combination, with thebed-plate 13, provided with pins 0, of the ruler A, havingraised flanges A, and the plate E, having an end flange, E, and adapted to a slide upon 'one of said 11. nges, the ruler being provided with graduating-marks on said flange corresponding to the spaces required by the type inmakingsucccssive letters, as shown and described.
