INVENTOR THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAFH c0-, WASHINGTON, D
FREDERICK W. GEOBY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DRAFTING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application filed March 17, 1908, Serial No. 421,743.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fnnnnmon IV. GRonY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drafting- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my said invention is to provide a machine capable of being manipulated to draw lines at any angle desired and one by which the length, angle and position of the lines and their distance apart may be accurately determined without the aid of other instruments, and further to adapt said invention for use in connection with mechanism by which notations of desired information may be made adj acent to the lines during the progress of the work, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a machine embodying my said invention,
Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same, and Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 detail views illustrating features of construction on an enlarged scale.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the bed upon which the machine is mounted, B the base of the frame on which the movable marking machine is supported, and C the base of the frame of said movable machine.
In the drawings I have illustrated my invention in connection with abooktypewriter of ordinary construction, which construction, as well as its operation, is, in the main, so far as its ordinary functions are concerned, substantially of the well-known character, and needs no special description herein.
The base A may be any suitable table or base on which the work is to be done, a flat platen being mounted thereon for holding said work. Said base is provided with a standard A near its rear edge in the top of which is formed a central bearing for the pivot a of a top or head portion A which is thus pivotally mounted thereon, being held from rotation by a set-screw a, or other suitable locking means. Said standard is preferably mounted so as to be adjusted transversely across said base by means of a screw-rod B mounted in bearings on said base and engaging with a screw-threaded perforation in a shank b on the bottom of said standard which eX- tends into atransverse slot in said base. A hand-wheel b is provided on said screw-rod itor1 olperating it. The standard may be oc rec secure in an osition b clam in bolts 6 y y p y P b The frame B is of rectangular form and of a size and material suitable for the purpose, provided with uprights B at each corner, the tops of which are connected by a spider-like frame B one bar of which extends from the top of each standard to a central hub B having an upwardly projecting pintle 79 Said hub B is pivoted to the inner end of a horizontal arm 13*, as shown most plainly in Fig. 6. The outer end of said arm B is rigidly mounted in the top of the pivoted head A A spring latch Z) is mounted on-the side of said hub B and is adapted to engage with any one of a series of notches 6 formed around the periphery of a downwardly projecting cylindrical part on the inner end of arm 13* in positions to mark degrees of a circle. By means of said latch Z) the frame B may be held at any angle in relation to said arm 13*. Mounted to extend longitudinally of the frame B are toothed rack-bars B constituting tracks on which the machine proper may run, being of the usual or any preferred arrangement.
The machine frame C may be the frame of any book-typewriter or a frame espe-' cially designed for the purpose, being shown only to illustrate the use of my said invention. Itis mounted to travel on the tracks B being actuated by the usual, or any preferred, mechanism. On said frame C are mounted the adding devices C and the carriage 0, adapted to travel on the ways 20 provided therefor, transversely to the travel of the frame C on the tracks B Said carriage C carries the usual typewriting mechanism and the operating mechanisms therefor, all of which are or may be of any wellknown or approved construction and need no special description herein. On said carriage C I have mounted a marker cwhich may be a pencil, pen, perforating wheel or any 7 other marking implement desired, adapted to be adjusted into or out of contact with the surface of the work. In Figs. 3 and 4 I have illustrated said marker as mounted in a socket 1 mounted on a bar 2 which bar is pivoted to a piece 0 on the lower part of the carriage G and at its outer end is hinged to an upright rod 3 which is pivoted at its outer end to a horizontal bar a. pivoted at an intermediate point in the top of a standard 0 of another part of said carriage C, the other end of said bar t being pivoted to a key 5, which is preferably located in the keyboard of the typewriter. In Fig. 3 the normal position of the marker is shown, being held up out of contact with the work by means of a weight 6. In Fig. f the marker is shown in position for narking upon the surface of the work, the key 5 being forced down, which operates through the connecting parts to change the position, as shown. In Fig. 5 I have shown the socket 1 as mounted in a fixed position on the end of a part 7 of the frame. A set-screw 9 in the side of said socket enables said marker to be adjusted up and down into and out of contact with the work.
It will be understood, of course, that the manner of mounting or the particular location of the marker is immaterial to the ob ject of my said invention, and that said marker may be mounted in any suitable manner and operated into and out of con tact with the work by any suitable mechanism. It being mounted upon the carriage C which slides transversely of the frame C and said frame being adapted to travel longitudinally upon the tracks B, it will be seen that said marker can be made to draw lines back and forth across the work and also that as said frame C is capable of being moved in one direction across the work regular spaces or distances by the feeding mechanism forming part of the ordinary typewriter construction, the lines may be made at any distance apart desired. Stops c are provided for insertion in a series of holes in a bar 21 of the frame C alongside of the way for carriage C, and are adapted to be inserted in the appropriate hole to limit the movement of said carriage at any points desired. A scale C is mounted to extend from side to side of the machine and an indicator on the end of an arm. 8 is carried on a part of the frame adjacent to said scale, so that any distance desired may be readily determined upon the work. The carriage C is connected by flexible connections 0 and 0 with spring controlled spools or power-barrels C and for sliding said carriage in one direction on the frame step by step, as the feeding mechanism is operated, in the same manner as in an ordinary book-typewriter construction.
It will thus be seen, that, by releasing the feed mechanism which controls the sliding of carriage C in one direction upon the frame 0, the carriage will be drawn automatically across the ways on the top of frame C and that the marker carried on said carriage will describe accurate lines and can be controlled by the stops and indicating mechanism so that the lines drawn will be in the exact location desired and of the proper length. After feeding said frame by the feed mechanism to the limit desired in one direction across the work it may be manually returned on the track in the same man nor as in the common typewriter construction. By releasing the spring catch 5 the frame B carrying the machine can be turned so that the carriage C may be caused to travel at any angle desired across the work IV, and thus draw lines at any angle to a given line. By the use of the typewriter any numerals, characters or wording de sired alongside the lines can be readily applied and by the use of the adding machine attachment various computations can be readily made upon the work, such as tabulating, billing and work of a like character, in which work all of the ruling necessary can be rapidly and quickly done by the marking device, as will be readily understood. By means of the screw-rod B the standard A carrying the entire apparatus may be moved transversely of the bed or table A, and the machine thus enabled to do work of any length desired without requiring a carriage of undue length. By loosening set-screw a the entire frame B, carrying all the mechanism, may be swung around on the arm B to one side of platen P to be out of the way when it is desired to adjust the work in the platen, or have access to said work for any purpose.
It will be understood, of course, that-the details of construction and arrangement may be varied as found desirable, the typewriting and computing mechanism used or not according to the requirements of the work, and other modifications made without departing from my invention as defined in the claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In an apparatus for drawing lines, the combination of a work supporting table, a support on said table, a frame provided with tracks and pivotally mounted on said support above said table, a frame mounted to travel on said tracks, a carriage mounted to reciprocate on said frame at right-angles to its movement on said tracks, and a marker adapted to slide on the surface of the work mounted on said carriage, substantially as set forth.
