Application November 17, 1952, Serial No. 320,959 Claims. ((1255-20) This invention relates to new and useful improvements inboring machines and more particularly boring machines for use in producing horizontal bores such as that disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 205,329, filed January 10, 1951, now Patent No. 2,665,117 issued January 5, 1954.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a boring machine including a drill holding shaft, driving wheels and a power plant that is-selectively operatively connected to the driving wheels and the drill holding shaft, whereby the machine may be moved or the shaft driven.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a boring machine including a power plant supporting carriage mounted on a frame and connected to a hydraulically actuated means that is so arranged as to impart sliding movement to the carriage without requiring a long frame structure.
A further object of the present invention is to. provide a power driven transmission mounted on an improved support that is vertically slidably adjustably carried by the carriage so that a horizontal drill coupled to the transmission may be raised or lowered.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a boring machine that is relatively small and compact in structure, strong and reliable in use, efficient and durable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the present invention in use;
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure l with the power plant shown by dotted lines, the drill removed and with parts broken away for the convenience of the explanation;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 44 of Figure 2 with the carriage retracted and the drill support raised;
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 5-5 of Figure 2 to show the manner in which the carriage is slidably engaged with the frame;
Figure 6 is a detailed sectional view along section line 6-6 of Figure 1 illustrating the jack structure; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a telescopic drive shaft.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral 10 represents an elongated substantially rectangular frame having a pair of spaced parallel longitudinal channel 2 shaped frame members 12 that are connected at their ends by forward and rear transverse frame members 14 and 16. The frame members 12 face each other and constitute guides for the rollers 18 of a carriage 20.
A rigid arm 22 is fixed to and extends forwardly from the forward transverse frame member 14. The arm 22 is formed with a vertical bearing 24 that receives the vertical shaft 26 of a yoke 28. An axle 30 carried by yoke 28 supports a forward pneumatic guide wheel 32. A steering lever 34 is fixed to the upper end of shaft 26 and forms a means whereby the shaft 26 may be rotated for steering of the frame 10.
The rear end of frame 10 is supported for movement on a rear wheel mount 36 including a differential 38 that is fixed to the frame 10 at the end thereof. A transmission 40 supported by the differential 38 and a transverse member 42 of the frame 10 is operatively connected to' the differential. Transmission 40 includes a forwardly extending relatively short splined shaft 44 disposed longitudinally of the frame 10 over which is slipped one internally splined tube 46 of a universal coupling or joint 48 for a purpose presently to be described.
Carriage 2t) is preferably constructed of rigid channel members that support a power plant 50. Four spaced parallel vertically disposed angle irons 52 are fixedly secured to the carriage 20 to form a unitary part thereof. The angle irons 52 face each other and slidably engage the four vertically disposed facing, angle irons 55 of a drill support 54.
A transmission 56 is mounted at the lower end of the support 54 and includes a horizontally disposed driven shaft 58 having a forwardly extending end portion whose forward extremity is externally splined to enter the rear internally splined end of a drill or auger 60. Transmission 56 also includes a gear shift lever 62 whereby the shaft 58 may be rotated at different speeds or reversed. A vertically disposed, multi-sided tube 64 is operatively connected by gearing to the drive shaft of transmission 56 and is maintained in position by virtue of a guide sleeve 65 on the transmission.
Power plant 50 is of known construction and includes a driving shaft 66 having a suitable clutch 68 that is moved into and out of clutching engagement by a hand lever 70. A cable drum 72 keyed on a shaft 74 that is operatively connected to the shaft 66 is fixed to one end of a cable 76. Cable 76 extends over a pulley 78 carried by an arm 80 fixed to the carriage, about a pulley 82 attached to transmission 56 and its free end is secured to an arm 84 fixed to the carriage 20 so that the cable 76 maybe wound on the drum 72 for raising the support 54 or unwound from the drum 72 for lowering of the support 54.
The power plant 50 includes a second driving shaft 86 that is operatively connected to a universal joint or coupling 88 as shown in Figure 3. Joint 88 is provided with a depending multi-sided sleeve portion. 90 that will receive the upper end of a multi-sided connecting shaft 92. The lower end of shaft 92 is removably received in the tube 64 so that shaft 58 may be driven by the power plant 50. The shaft 92 is replaceable with a second multi-sided shaft 94 of shorter length whose ends will be engaged in the sleeve portion 90 and the multi-sided sleeve portion 96 of joint 48 for driving the rear wheels 98 of the frame 10.
Instead of using the shafts 92 and 94 it is preferable to use a telescopic multi-sided shaft 95, as shown in Figure 7, so that the same may selectively couple the sleeve portion 90 to the sleeve portion 96 and tube 64. This construction will also permit the tube 64 to be rotated regardless as to the vertical adjustment of the 3 support 54 relative to the carriage 29 without the necessity of utilizing shafts of dilferent lengths.
A pair of spaced parallel. fluid actuated members 104 underlie the carriage and extend longitudinally of the frame 10. Each of the members 108 includes a cylinder 102 whose rear closed end is secured to the rear end of the carriage 20 by rigid straps 1&4. The members 109 also include piston rods 166 whose forward ends are at tached to the forward transverse frame member 14 and pistons 108 fixed to the rear ends of the rods 1% and received in the forward ends of the cylinders 102.
The power plant is suitably operatively connected to a pump 110 whose intake 111 is coupled to a reservoir 112 on the carriage 29. The outlet conduit 114 of pump 110 is connected to a two-way valve 116 that is connected to the forward and rear ends of both of the cylinders 102 by conduits 118 and 120. A return conduit 122 connects the valve 116 to the reservoir 112. When valve 116 is rotated to the position shown in Figure 3, oil pumped from the reservoir 112 by pump 113 will be directed through conduits 120 to the rear of cylinders 102 for urging the cylinders rearwardly in relation to the rods thereby moving the carriage rearwardly. Oil in the forward ends of the cylinders 102 will be forced by pistons 108 through conduits 118, 122 back to the reservoir.
To move the carriage 2i) forwardly, the valve Mn is rotated so that conduits 126 and 122 will be in communication with each other and conduits 118 and 114, so
that oil will be directed by the pump into the forward ends of the cylinders while oil in the rear ends of the cylinders is directed by the pistons 108 back to the reservoir.
Means is provided for vertically adjusting the frame. This means comprises forward and rear corner sleeves 124 and 126 that are fixedly secured to the frame 10. Supporting posts or legs 128 and 130 are slidably received in the sleeves 124 and 126 respectively and support pressure plates 132 ahd 134 at their lower ends. The posts 128, 130 are provided with vertically spaced horizontal apertures 136 and 138 for selectively receiving removable pins 140 and 142 that will engage the sleeves 124 and 126 to retain the posts either raised or lowered.
The upper ends of the posts 128, 130 support pulleys 144 over which cables 146 are engaged. One end of each cable 146 is fixed to the sleeves 126 or 124 of the associated post and the other ends of the cables 146 are fixed to cable drums 143 supported by brackets 15%) attached to the frame. One flange of each drum 148 comprises a ratchet gear 152 that is engageable with a pawl 154 on each side frame member 12.
A pair of coaxial stub shafts 156 are fixedly supported by the frame 10 at each end thereof, and these shafts will selectively engage the socketed end of a crank 158 having a gear 160 fixed thereto for meshing with the ratchet gear 152 of the drums 148.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A machinefor drilling horizontal bores, said machine comprising a horizontal frame having a forward guide wheel and a pair of rear driving wheels, a carriage slidably supported on the frame and movable between the ends of the frame, means connecting the carriage to the frame for moving the carriage relative to the frame, a vertical support slidably carried by the carriage, means connected to the support for adjusting the same vertically, a drill driving means mounted on the support, a power plant carried by the carriage, a universal joint connected to the power plant and including a multi-sided sleeve, a rear wheel driving shaft connected to the driving wheels, a second universal joint connected to the rear wheel driving shaft, and means for selectively coupling the sleeve to the second joint or the drill driving means.
2. A machine for drilling horizontal bores, said machine comprising a horizontal tramehaving a forward guide wheel and a pair ofarear driving wheels, a carriage slidably supported on the frame and movable between the ends of the frame, means connecting the carriage to the frame for moving the carriage relative to the frame, a vertical support slidably carried by the carriage, means connected to the support for adjusting the same vertically, a drill driving means mounted on the support, a power plant carried by the carriage, means operatively connected to the power plant and selectively operatively connected to the drill driving means or the driving wheels, and means at the ends of the frame for raising the frame and the wheels thereof off the ground for leveling the frame.
3. A machine for drilling horizontal bores, said machine comprising a horizontal frame having a forward guide wheel and a pair of rear driving wheels, a carriage slidably supported on the frame and movable between the ends of the frame, means connecting the carriage to the frame for moving the carriage relative to the frame, a vertical support slidably carried by the carriage, means connected to the support for adjusting the same vertically, a drill driving means mounted on the support, a power plant carried by the carriage, and means selectively operatively engageable with the drill driving means or the driving wheels, said frame including a pair of spaced parallel longitudinal channel shaped frame members, said frame members facing each other, and rollers carried by the carriage tracking in the frame members.
4. A machine for drilling horizontal bores, said machine comprising va horizontal frame having a forward guide wheel and a pair of rear. driving wheels, a carriage slid-ably supported on the frame and movable between the ends of the frame, means connecting the carriage to the frame for moving the carriage relative to the frame, a vertical support slidably carried by the carriage, means connected to the support for adjusting the same vertically, a drill driving means mounted on the support, a power plant carried by the carriage, and means selectively operatively engageable with the drill driving means or the driving wheels, said frame and said carriage each having forward and rear ends, a pair of fluid actuated members constituting said carriage moving means and each having a cylinder and a piston rod slidable in and from the cylinder, said cylinders being fixed to the rear end of the carriage, and said piston rods being fixed to the forward end of said frame.
5. A machine for drilling horizontal bores, said machine comprising a horizontal frame having a forward guide wheel and a pair of rear driving wheels, a carriage slidably supported on the frame and movable between the ends of the frame, means connecting the carriage to the frame for moving the carriage relative to the frame, a vertical support slid-ably carried by the carriage and terminating below the frame, means connected to the support for adjusting the same vertically, a drill driving means mounted on the support, a power plant carried by the carriage, and means selectively operatively engageable with the drill driving means or the driving wheels, said carriage including four spaced parallel vertically disposed angle irons facing each other, said support also including four spaced parallel vertically disposed angle irons facing each other and being nested in and slidable in the first named angle irons.
