Description

GAS STOVE SAFETY DEVICE Filed July 12, 1956 Anton/'0 Ron de/lo IN V EN TOR.
BY MM 3m United States Patent GAS STOVE SAFETY DEVICE Antonio Rondello, East Northport, N. Y. Application July 12, 1956, Serial No. 597,434 6 Claims. (Cl. 126-42) The present invention relates to multiple bumer gas cooking stoves or ranges and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for positively locking all of the usual burner control valves in closed position, thus promoting safety in addition to preventing the waste of gas.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a safety device of the character described which secures the usual oven and side doors of the stove in closed position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a gas stove safety device of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, compact, highly efficient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing the upper portion of a gas stove provided with a safety device embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the rod and lock therefor;
Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective of one of the side door securing members; and,
Figure 6 is a view in front elevation, modification.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 7 designates generally a gas cooking stove or range comprising the usual burners indicated generally at 8. The usual stems of the gas regulating or controlvalves of the burners 8 have fixed on one end portion thereof operating knobs 9 extending in a row across the upper front portion of the stove 7. The knobs 9 include depending ears or handles 10 provided with hushed openings 11 which are aligned when the burner valves are in closed position.
The openings 11 are for the reception of a removable rod 12 of suitable metal. At one end, the rod 12 terminates in a handle 13 which also functions as a stop. Removably mounted on the other end portion 'of the rod 12 is a lock 14 operable by a key 15.
When engaged in the openings 11, the rod 12 extends transversely across the upper portion of the usual oven door 16 of the stove 7 beneath the handle 17, thus positively securing said door in closed position.
Metallic bars or arms 18 are suspended from the rod 12 between the pairs of knobs 9. Loops 19 on the upper ends of the bars 18 slidably receive the rod 12. Eyes 20 on the lower ends of the bars 18 are engageable over the usual handles 21 on the free upper end portions of the showing a slight 2,834,335 Patented May 13, 1958 2 side doors 22 of the stove 7 for securing said doors in closed position.
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when all of the burner valves are in closed position, the openings 11 are aligned. The eyes 20 of the bars 18 are slipped on the side door handles 21 and the loops 19 on said bars 18 are aligned with the openings 11. The rod 12 is then inserted in an obvious manner through the aligned openings 11 and loops 19, said rod extending across the oven door 16 beneath the handle 17 thereof. The lock 14 is then secured on the rod 12 and said rod thus secures all of the burner valves and the stove doors 16 and 22 in closed position.
In Figure 6 of the drawing, reference character 23 designates generally a portion of a gas stove of the type comprising a timer having a regulating knob or handle 24 mounted centrally on the upper front portion of said stove. The timer handle or knob 24 has extending therethrough an opening for the passage of the rod 12 for positively securing the timer against operation. The burner valve knobs 25 include operating handles or ears 26 having openings therein for alignment with each other and with the opening in the timer knob 24 for the reception of the rod 12.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
l. A gas stove comprising a plurality of burner valve operating knobs having openings therein which are aligned when the valves are in closed position, said stove further comprising a plurality of hinged doors and handles on said doors, a removable rod slidably mounted in the aligned openings in said valve knobs for securing the valves in closed position, and bars engaged with the rod and mounted on the door handles for securing the doors in closed position.
2. A gas stove comprising, in combination, a plurality of burner'valve operating knobs having openings therein which are aligned when the valves are in closed position, said stove further including a bottom hinged oven door having its upper portion aligned with and between the knobs, and a removable rod mounted in the aligned openings in said valve knobs for securing the knobs against rotation and for securing the door in closed position.
3. A gas stove comprising a plurality of burner valve operating knobs having openings therein which are aligned when the valves are in closed position, at least one movable door on said stove, lock means pivotally connected to said door having an opening in the upper end thereof aligned with the openings in said valve knobs, a removable rod mounted in the aligned openings for securing the knobs against rotation and for securing the door in closed position.
4. A gas stove comprising a plurality of burner valve operating knobs having openings therein which are aligned when the valves are in closed position, at least one movable door on said stove, lock means pivotally connected to said door having an opening in the upper end thereof aligned with the openings in said valve knobs, a removable rod mounted in the aligned openings for securing the knobs against rotation and for securing the door in closed position, said stove further including a bottom hinged oven door having its upper portion aligned with and between the knobs.
5. A gas stove comprising a plurality of burner valve operating knobs having openings therein which are aligned when the valves are in closed position, at least one movable door on said stove, lock means pivotally connected to said door having an opening in the upper end thereof aligned with the openings in said valve knobs, a removable rod mounted in the aligned openings for securing the knobs against rotation and for securing the door in closed position, a rotary timer control knob having an opening therein for alignment with the openings in said valve knobs.
6. A gas stove comprising a plurality of burner valve operating knobs having openings therein which are aligned when the valves are in closed position, at least one movable door on said stove, lock means pivotally connected to said door having on opening in the upper end thereof aligned with the openings in said valve knobs, a removable rod mounted in the aligned openings for securing the knobs against rotation and for securing the door in closed position, said stove further including a bottom hinged oven door having its upper portion aligned with and between the knobs, a rotary timer control knob having an opening therein for alignment With the openings in said valve knobs.
