ANTI- FRICTION JOURNALEBQX- SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 283,421, dated August 21, 1883.
Application filed June 22, 1883. (No model.)
nal-Boxes; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripv as tion of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a cross-section of my improved anti-frictionjournal-box. Fig. 2is a longitudinal sectional view of the same through line a" r in Fig. 1. Fig. 3'is an end view of the inside cylinder, with its anti-friction rollers. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the same with the rollers removed, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the removable anti-friction rollers.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to anti-friction journal-boxes adapted for use on railway-cars, or in the axle-boxes of street-cars or vehicles and wagons of ordinary construction, as well as for use on the shaft-ing of machinery; and
my invention consists in the detailed construc.
tion and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, of an antifriction journal-box of that class in which a series of rollers are boxed in a cylindrical.
- shell or casing encircling the journal inside of the box, so as to form bearings for the journal and prevent this from frictional contact with the box.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the j ournal-box proper, and B the journal.
G is a cylindricalbox or casing, open at both (31163, and provided with end flanges, D D, and with a series of longitudinal slots, E, beveled along both edges, as shown at F. This cylinder 0 forms a bearing for the removable cylindrical rollers G, which are of such a length that they will fit between the end flanges, D D, while the beveled slots E F form,
seats for the rollersflwhich project about equal actual contact either with the journal B,which is inserted through it, or with the journal-box I A, into which it is inserted.
By reference to Fig. 2 'of the drawings, it will be seen that cylinder C is made somewhat shorter than the journal-box, so as to leave an annular, space, H, between the end flanges, D -D,"0f the cylinder and the collars I I, which are fixed upon the journal and bear against opposite ends of the journal-box. Into these annular chambers are placed friction-balls J, of suchsize as tofit between the flanges D and journal ecollars I. These balls operate to re duce the friction between the inside rollercylinder, 0, and the fixed collars I I, so that the journal will run with a minimum of friction not only as regards the inside of the journal-box, but also with respect to the journalcollars I I. By this construction I also obviate the use of washers or leather packing, which soon wears out and requires constant renewal, especially where the journals, as in railway-cars, are run at great speed.
I am aware that friction-balls have been i prevent the shell from binding against or coming in frictional contact with either end of the box in tilting the cars when a train passes around curves.
sire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the journal box or bearing A, cylindrical casing or roller shell 0, having end flanges, D D, and beveled rollerseats E F, removable cylindrical rollers G, friction-balls J, placed in the annular chann- .9 What I claim as my improvement, and de- 2 I 283A2H bers H between the end flanges, D I) and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as collars I I, at opposite ends of the roll-shell, my own I have hereunto affixed my signature and jou'rnal B, having fixed collars I I, bearin presence of two witnesses. ing against the ends of the journal-box, where- ALVIN RUSSELL.
5 by said chambers H H are formed, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
Witnesses:
