1 Claim. (Cl. 15-160) This invention comprises a new and improved basting brush so constructed and arranged that the troublesome operation of basting a hot roast of large and irregular shape may be carried out more conveniently and thoroughly than heretofore either in the kitchen or at an outdoor barbecue.

My improved brush has a long light-weight handle that permits the user to manipulate the brush at a comfor-table distance from the hot pan or spit. It also supplies a compact body of bristles in the position most convenient for brushing over the surface of a roast and reaching over-hanging or awkwardly disposed portions thereof such as sides, under wings, drumsticks, etc. It is also designed so that the'bristles may be clipped in the bastin liquid without pulling out the roasting pan from the oven to reach it. Further, a portion of the handle and the holder or casing for the bristles is shaped to present flat surfaces upon which the brush as a whole may be supported with the bristles in upright position.

These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

The illustrated embodiment of the invention includes a hollow tubular handle of anodized aluminum or other light-weight metal. At its outer end this tube is inserted firmly in an enlarged gripping body 11 constructed of any material non-conductive of heat such as hard wood which will not get hot in use. The grip is rectangular or square in cross section and presenting four plane surfaces of which the upper surface, shown in Fig. l, is substantially parallel though slightly convergent with respect to the axis of the handle.

At its other end the material of the handle is flattened to form an attaching flange 12 and to this is secured a compact body of bristles 13. The bristles are contained within and shaped by an elongated rectangular casing 14 2,834,037 iatented May 13, 1958 'ice having a flat back plate 15 which is permanently secured to the attaching flange 12 by rivets. The bristles themselves form a rectangular body which is disposed with its longitudinal axis in the same plane as the axis of the handle. It will be readily seen that this is the most convenient arrangement of the bristles for reaching over the sides of the roasting pan into the basting liquid, and also the most convenient position for brushing and spreading the basting liquid upon the various surfaces of the roast.

The construction above described has the further important advantage that the brush may be laid on any flat surface and supported in that position by the outer end of the back plate 15 and the corresponding flat surface of the gripping body 11 with the bristles held in upright position where they are kept clean themselves and do not foul the underlying surface upon which the brush may be placed.

The position of the body of bristles with respect to the axis of the handle is an important feature of the invention and is indicated in Fig. 1. When the body of bristles is rectangular, its longitudinal axis will diverge at approximately 20 with respect to the axis of the handle.

Having thus disclosed my invention and described in detail an illustrative embodiment, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A new and improved basting brush comprising a body of pliant bristles enclosed in and extending from the bottom of a rectangular casing, a rectangular flat back plate attached to the rectangular top of said casing, an elongated tubular metal handle rigidly connected to said back plate and extending longitudinally and outwardly therefrom, there being an acute angle between the plane of said back plate and the longitudinal axis of said handle, and a gripping body composed of a heat insulating material rigidly connected to the extremity of said handle, said gripping body having its upper portion terminating in a straight transverse edge at the end remote from the brush, said edge being parallel to the upper, outer transverse edge of the back plate, whereby said brush will have contact with a fiat supporting surface only at its opposite ends with its bristles extending in an upward direction.
