UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE. e
HENRY B. JONES, OF PHLADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
INKSTAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,348, dated August 14, 1883.
. Application filed March 23, i883.-
' To all whom, it may concern:
` certain Improvements in lnkstands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of inkstands in which the hinged lid ofthe ink-bottle is connected to a pivoted pen'rack, so that the said lid will be closed when the pen-holder is laid uponthe rack, and will permitted to open when the Weilght of the pen-holder is removed'from the rac My invention consists, first, of an improvement in the construction of the pivoted penrack with side frames and Weights adjustable on the arms of said side frames; and, second, of an improved hinge-connection betweenthe ink-bottle and lid, which may be applied to an ordinary inkstand, as more fully described hereinafter.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an inkstand with my improvements, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, partly in elevation; Fig. 3, a side view ci' the upper end of the ink-bottle, and of the lid and its hinge-connection detached from the bottle; Fig. 4, a sectional' pla-n on the line l 2, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, an enlarged perspective view of the'hinge-joint for the lid of the bottle. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 arc ou a larger scale than Figs. l and 2. f
The frame of the stand comprises the base A and opposite side frames, B B, carrying the rod c, on which is hung the pen-rack D, the latter comprising the opposite-side frames, b b, and the connectingbars d.
The ink-bottle F is adapted toa sea-t, e, on
the base A, and as it is necessary that said inlebottle should always preserve its proper relation vertically to the rack D, l lock the bottle to the seat c by means of segmental ribs f on the bottle, these ribslbeing adapted to grooved lugs g on the seat e, so that by 'applying the bottleto the seat and then turning the saine part Way around, in order to cause the engagement of the ribs and lugs, the bottle will be firmly retained.
(No model.)
The lid G is hinged to a collar on the neck 50 of the bottle, as described hereinafter, and said lid is connected by a rod, h, to one'of the cross-bars d ofthe rack D. Said rack D is so Weighted in the rear of its pivot-rod that when the penholder is removed` from the 55 rack, as shown in Figsl l and 2, the lid Gwill 'be' elevated and the mouth of the bottle F opened; but when the pen-holder` is applied to the front of the rack the preponderance of Weight at the rear of the same will be ver- 6o come and the lid G will be closed.
As pen-holders vary in Weight, it is advisable, in order. to insure the proper action of the rack D, to furnish the latter with a Variable counterbalance Weight. This l accom- 6 5 plish by providing one or both of the frames b of the rack (preferably of both, as shown) with an adjustable Weight, m, the effect of Which on the rack can be varied by moving it from or toward the center of the same.
The lid G of .the ink-bottle has an elastic arm, fn, which is hung to a pin, p, carried by lugs s on a clamp, J, the latter heilig adapted to embrace the neck of the bottle, and the arms of the same being elastic, so that lugs at the outer ends of said arms, are caused to engage with the Aribs or corrugations w, which are formed upon the neck of the bottle, the clamp being thereby retained in proper position, as twisting of the same ou the bottle is effectually prevented.v
To protect the joint and prevent the access of ink thereto, luse a hood, @which is adapted to fit over the lugs s, and is secured in place by the pivot-pin. An elastic hood, itted to the lugs after the pivotpin has been applied, may be used in place of the hood shown; but the latter is preferred.
l have shown an inlrstand having but one ink-bottle; but my invention may be used in connection with stands having two or inorebottles, if desired.
l claim as my inventionl. The combination of the ink-bottle having a hinged lid, the pivoted pen-rack` connected to said lid, and having side frames, b b, and the Weights ln., adapted to and adjustable on the arms of said sideiramcs, b, as set forth.
2. The combination of the bottle having a ribbed or corrugated neck with the clamp J, having` elastic arms with lugs t,- adapted to the said ribbed neck, as set forth. 5 3. The combination of the bottle7 the collar J, with its lugs, the lid with its arm, and the hood x, as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed 1n y name to this specification in the presence of two sub scribing Witnesses. f HENRY B. JONES. fitness es HARRY L. Asi-IENFELTRR, HARRY SMITH.
