Description
April 29, 1958 w. JUHASE PORTABLE BEACH SHELTER Filed Dec. 11, 1956 Fig.
INVENTOR Mb/fer Juhase United States Patent TORTABLE BEACH SHELTER Walter .iuhase, Bronx, N. Y.
Application December 11, 1956, Serial No. 627,607
3 Claims. (Cl. 135-=-5) This invention relates to beach shelters.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a beach shelter which is entirely portable and very light in weight and which can be easily carried to the beach and set up with a minimum of time and effort.
it is another object of the present invention to provide a portable beach shelter of the above type which may be easily disassembled so as to occupy a relatively small space when not in use and for convenience in portability and storage.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a beach shelter bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, it
is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation and use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention shown in operative use;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken along the iine 2--2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective view of some of the parts comprising the invention and shown in the collapsed position, for portability and storage.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, represents a pair of top members of equal length and formed of aluminum tubing and which are connected at their ends in lateraily spaced relationship by the cross pieces 11 of U-shaped configuration also being formed of aluminum tubing, and having an inside diameter equal to the outside diameter of the top members 10 and receiving the same therewithin in frictional engagement. to facilitate the assembly and disassembly of the invention as will hereinafter become clear.
A leg member 12 is rotatably connected at its upper end to the outside of each of the top members 10 by means of the wing nut assemblies 13, the leg members i" being positioned at diagonally opposite corners of the shelter, as shown in Fig. 1.
A second pair of leg members 14 of aluminum tubing are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the inner faces of the top members 10 near each end by means of the wing nut assemblies 15, the leg members 14 being positioned diagonally opposite corners of the shelter. An aluminum washer is positioned intermediate the wing nuts of each of the wing nut assemblies 13 and 15 and the leg members 12 and 14 and between each of the top members iii and the leg members 12 and 14.
A second pair of cross members 16 of aluminum tubing identical in construction with the cross members 11 are provided and connect the lower ends of the leg members 12 with the lower ends of the leg members 14, the inside diameter of the cross member 16 being equal to the outside diameter of the legs 12 and 14 and being frictionally fitted onto the lower ends thereof to permit easy assembly and disassembly.
With the parts assembled as shown in Fig. 1, the legs iii) "ice
2 12 and 14 are locked at the desired angle to the top members 14 for supporting the same by means of the Wing nut assemblies 13 and 15, as will be obvious.
A rectangular fitted plastic cover 17 is formed around its periphery with the depending tunnel 18 by means of the stitching 19 (Fig. 2) within which is positioned the endless loop 20 of elastic whereby to retain the cover in engagement with the shelter top and to permit its easy removal.
In operation, the shelter is set up as shown in Fig. 1, and the plastic cover will provide shelter from the sun. The device is formed of aluminum and is of extremely light weight and simple construction. For convenience in portability and storage, the cover 17 is removed and the wing nut assemblies 13 and 15 are loosened and the cross members 11 and 16 are removed from the respective top members 10 and leg members 12 and 14 The leg members 12 and 14 may then be rotated upwardly against the top members 10, as shown in Fig. 3, and locked in this position by means of the. Wing nut assemblies 13 and 15. Thus, the entire unit may be compactly arranged and wrapped up into the cover 17.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
i. A beach shelter comprising, in combination, a pair of tubular top members of equal length, a first pair of tubular cross pieces of U-shaped configuration frictionally receiving each end the opposite ends of said top members to form a rectangular top frame, a pair of leg members for each of said top members, means for pivotally connecting the upper ends of said leg members to each of said top members at opposite ends on opposite sides thereof and for locking the same in any angle relative thereto to support the top frame and to permit the leg members to be collapsed upwardly against the opposite sides of the top members when not in use, a second pair of tubular cross pieces of U-shaped configuration frictionally receiving within the ends thereof the lower ends of said leg members, and removable cover means for the top frame whereby to provide a beach shelter which may be easily set up and as readily disassembled and which is compact for storage and portability, said means for rotatably mounting the upper ends of said leg members on the opposite sides of the top members at the opposite ends thereof comprising wing nut assemblies and washers intermediate the wing nuts of said wing nut assemblies and said leg members, and intermediate said leg members and said top members, said cover means comprising a rectangular fitted plastic cover having a depending tunnel around its periphery within which is positioned an endless loop of elastic to facilitate the insertion and removal of the cover from the top frame of the beach shelter.
2. A beach shelter as set forth in claim 1, wherein said cover extends over the top and outer sides of said top frame, and said tunnel and enclosed elastic extends beneath the bottom marginal edges of said top frame.
3. A beach shelter as set forth in claim 2, wherein said top frame defines an upper and lower plane, and said leg members are secured to said top frame intermediate said upper and lower planes.
