To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, DAVID BLOCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York,

have invented anew and useful Improvement in Knife-Boxes, of which the following is a to occupy a smaller compass than heretofore,

thereby facilitating the shipping of the same. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved knife-box. I Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken on the line at x of Fig. 3, and seen in the direction of arrow 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line y y of Fig. 1, and seen in the direction of arrow 2. The sides and bottom of the two compartments A B of the knife-box, as well as the central partition between them, are all formed simultaneously, in one operation, out of one piece of sheet metal or other thin material suitable to be shaped in dies for the purpose. The two end walls, 0, are made separately, and solderedv or otherwise secured to the body of the box, and are set at a slight inclination, as shown in Fig. 3, to facilitate the placing of the boxes one into the other for the convenience of packing and shipping. Along each of the compartments A and B is raised a bead, a, to stiffen the side walls and'keep them in shape. These beads "are preferably made in the shape shown in Fig. 2, so as to allow them to be formed simultaneously with the whole body of the box by one pressure of the die, and allow the withdrawal of the die after pressure.

The bottom of the box is pressed cross-sectionof the box, as in Fig. 2, the said grooves appear crescent-shaped, having the greatestdepth atthe center of the bottom, as at d, and ending on the sides, at d, just below the bead a. The curved bottom, provided with the aforesaid 'corrugations,"renders the knife-box not only neat in appearance, but 'very strong, and not liable to be dented or bulged. The dies, in forming the box, leave the center of the plate E curved and raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and connecting the inner Walls of the twocompartments, and to this raised portion is soldered the handle e, which consists merely of a strip of metal or a wire, and is just high enough to allow the insertion of the fingers in the opening for carrying the box, but yet not so high as to materially interfere with the packing of the boxes one above and into the other for the purpose above stated. For the said purpose the upper portions, f, of the side walls of the compartments are inclined, as shown in Fig. 2, in a; like manner to the end walls, 0. At the center of the box the said end walls, 0, are made sufficiently wide and rounded ofi at c to prevent bending of the body-plate over its center portion, E, by the weight of the cutlery placed in the box. i

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A knife-box having the body portion of its two compartments-A formed simultaneously of one piece of sheet material and its end walls, 0, secured thereto, substantially as set forth.

2. A knife-box formed of a body portion provided with the cross-corrugations D and longitudinal beads a, all struck up from one and the same piece, in combination with the endpieces, O, substantiallyas set forth.
