LIPSTICK CONTAINER Filed Nov. 5, 195s INVENTOR. E0/V EW United States Patent O LIPSTICK coNrAiNER Leon H. Levi, Beverly Hills, Calif., assignor to Max Factor Co., Los Angeles, Calif., a corporation of Delaware Application November s, 1956, serial No. 620,450
4 claims. (ci. 132-79) This invention relates to containers and is particularly directed to improvements in a container for lipstick assemblies.
Conventional lipstick containers commonly comprise a cylindrical body having a telescopically mounted cap. A
i rotary knob on one end of the body serves to advance and retract a lipstick through the end of the body which is normally closed by the cap. It is an object of this invention to eliminate the cap and provide a novel form of container for the housing, lipstick and propel-repel mechanism.
Another object is to provide a novel form of container, having a body formed of two cooperating members hinged together, and wherein one of the members is provided with a resilient element adapted to raise one end of the lipstick assembly, when the container is opened, in order to facilitate manual grasping of the lipstick container. Another object is to provide a device for this type in which one of the hinged members provides the mounting for a mirror and in which the other member supports the resilient means and lipstick assembly. Other and more detailed objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a prospective view showing a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, the container being closed.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, with the parts in open position.
Figure 4 fis a transverse .sectional View taken substantially on the lines 4--4 as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view showing a modification, the container being closed.
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the device shown in Figure 5, the parts being in open position.
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the lines 7-7 as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a sectional detail partly broken away taken substantially on the lines 8-8 as shown in Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings, the container, generally designated 10, comprises a base member 11, a cooperating cover member 12 and a connecting hinge 13. The base member 11 contains a metallic liner 14 which has a forward or nose portion 15 which includes a partition 16 and curved topiwall 17. The parts 15, 16 and 17 cooperate to form a cavity 18. The 4partition V16 has an entrance opening 19 communicating with the cavity 1S. The liner 14 and the bottom wall 20 thereof are formed of resilient material, and this bottom wall 2i) is curved in the form of a leaf spring with its free end 21 spaced substantially above the lower wall of the base member 11.
A lipstick assembly, generally designated 21, is adapted to be received within the interior of the container 10, and is provided with a cylindrical body or shell 22 and a rotatable knob 23. Propel-repel mechay ICC nism, not shown, is provided for advancing and retracting the lipstick 24 through the open end 25 of the shell upon rotation of the knob 23.
A mirror 26 is mounted in the cover member 12 and this mirror is adapted to contact the outer end of the lipstick assembly 21 when the cover member 12 is closed. Closing of the cover 12 causes the lipstick assembly 21 to depress the resilient tongue or leaf spring 20. A releasable latch mechanism 27 holds the cover member 12 in closed position. As shown in the drawings, this latch mechanism may comprise interengaging parts 28 on the cover member 12 and liner 14 which parts may be released by exerting manual pressure on the trigger 29.
When the latch mechanism 27 is released and the cover member 12 swung toward open position, a resilient spring element 20 raises the rearward portion of the lipstick assembly 21 with respect to the base member 11, thereby lifting it to a position in which it may be readily grasped between the lingers. The assembly 21 may then be withdrawn axially to remove the forward end of the assembly from the cavity 18. Rotation of the knob 23 then serves to propel the lipstick 24 through the open end 25 of the body or shell 22.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Figure 5, the base member 11a and the cover member 12a are designed to be formed from plastic materials. The hinge 13a connects the members in the manner described above. The interengaging parts 23a provide a latch 27a. ln this form of my invention, the liner 14a may be formed of plastic materials, and the entire liner is pivoted on trunnions 35 (see Figure 8) with respect to the base member 11a. A coil spring 36 is interclosed between the lower surface of the base member 11a and the shelf portion 20a of the liner 14a. The spring 36 acts to pivot the liner 14a about the trunnion 35. When the container is closed with the lipstick assembly 21 in place, a pivotal movement of the shelf 20a is limited by a contact of the container 21 with the mirror 26. When the container is open as shown in Figure 6, pivotal movement of the shelf 20a and liner 14a is limited by contact between the forward end 37 of the liner 14a with the base member 11a. The trunnions 35 are assembled into cooperating recesses formed on the base member 11a by springing the side anges of the base member as shown in phantom lines in Figure 8.
In operation, the modified form of my invention shown in Figures 5-8 is substantially the same as that previously described. When the container is opened by swinging the cover member 12a about the hinge 13a, the spring 36 raises one end of the lipstick assembly 21 so that it may readily be grasped. A forward end of the lipstick assembly 21 may then be withdrawn from the cavity 18a through the entrance opening 19a.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the details herein set forth but that my invention is of lthe full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In combination, a container comprising a base member and a cover member connected by a hinge, a liner positioned within the base member and having means defining a cavity and an entrance opening, at least a portion of said liner being movable a substantial amount in a plane parallel to the hinge axis, a lipstick assembly having one end adapted to extend into the cavity through the entrance opening, the other end thereof contacting said portion of the liner and being resiliently maintained thereby in an elevated position, thecover member having an element adapted to contact the lipstick assembly when the cover member is in closed position to depress the lipstick assembly and the movable portion of the liner.
2. The combination set forth in claim 1 wherein the entire liner is movable relative to the base member and wherein a spring is interposed between the liner and the base member to lift one end of the lipstick assembly.
3. The combination set forth in claim l wherein the cover member element comprises a mirror.
4. In combination, a container comprising a base member and a cover member connected by a hinge, a liner positioned within the base member and having means defining a cavity and an entrance opening, a por tion of said liner being movable a substantial amount in a plane parallel to the hinge axis, a lipstick assembly having one end adapted to extend into the cavity through the entrance opening, said portion of the liner comprising a leaf spring acting to lift one end of the lipstick assembly, the other end of the lipstick assembly contacting said portion of the liner and being resiliently maintained thereby in an elevated position, the cover member having an element adapted to contact the lipstick assembly when the cover member is in closed position to depress the lipstick assembly and the movable portion of the l0 liner.
