RUSSELL W. TACCONE United Sitates Patent MOLDING MACHINE Russell W. Taccone, Erie, Pa., assignor to Taccone Pneumatic Foundry Equipment Corporation, North East Township, Erie County, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvama Application November 25, 1955, Serial No. 548,847
2 Claims. (Cl. 22-40) This invention relates to molding machines and more particularly to molding machines ultilizing diaphragms for compressing molding material in a flask around a pattern.
The purpose of the present invention is to overcome the diificulties frequently encountered in diaphragmmolding in that the molding material around the edges of the pattern is not compacted as firmly as the material over the top of thepattern. This results in a mold of less quality than molds wherein the material is packed uniformly throughout. The present disclosure provides a simple economical means for compacting the sand around the sides of the pattern by deflecting the diaphragm in a molding machine.
It is, accordingly, an object of this invention to provide a molding machine which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and simple and eflicient to use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a molding machine which will compact the molding material in a mold evenly and uniformly around the pattern.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine utilizing a diaphragm for compacting molding material wherein the diaphragm is deflected from its natural movement so as to change the direction of force of the diaphragm on various parts of the molding material.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of contruction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a transverse cross sectional view of a molding machine according to the invention.
Now with more specific reference to the drawing, the molding machine is made up of a base having bored bosses 11 at either side thereof which receive the lower end of upwardly extending columns 12. The columns 12 have shoulders 13 which rest on top of the bosses 11 and are held in place by means of nuts 14. The upper ends of the columns 12 are threaded at 15 and are received in the bores of bosses 16 with nuts 17 supporting the bosses 16 attached to a head 18. Nuts 49 are threadably attached to the upper threaded ends of the columns 12.
The head 18 supports a blower 19 which exhausts a cavity 20 in a tank 41 behind a diaphragm 22 in the manner disclosed in Patent No. 2,715,758. A pipe 21 is provided through which a source of compressed air may be selectively discharged into the cavity 20 behind the diaphragm 22. The diaphragm 22 is attached to downwardly extending edges 23 of the tank 41 and a plate 24 is attached to a flange 25 of the tank 41 and extends inwardly at 26 to support a horizontally disposed portion 27 of the diaphragm 22.
A flask 29 is adapted to be supported on a pattern plate 30 which is in turn supported on a car 31. A pattern 32 of the required Shape is attached to the pattern plate 30. Molding material 34 such as foundry sand can be disposed around the pattern 32 and packed therearound as will be explained later.
The vacuum induced by means of the blower 19 behind the diaphragm 22 drives the diaphragm 22 up into the cavity 20. Then the car 31 having the pattern plate 30 and the flask 29 thereon with molding material 34 therein is moved under the head 18 and air pressure from the source 21 is applied behind the diaphragm 22 which causes it to compress the molding material 34 in the flask 29. The molding material at the central part of the flask 29 at 37 is compressed by the diaphragm 22 to a certain degree. The molding material around the sides at 38 is compressed downwardly by overlapping portions 39 of the diaphragm 22. Therefore, the molding material is compressed more around the edges than it would ordinarily be.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical forms but the structure shown in capable of modification within arange of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as in commensurate with the appended claims.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A molding machine comprising a molding machine head having a downwardly opening cavity defined by a tank, means to support a flask below said tank, said flask being supported on said means, said flask being substantially coextensive with said downwardly opening tank, a diaphragm support comprising a flat plate having an opening through the center thereof, said plate extending inwardly from the edges of said tank forming a shelf and adapted to extend over molding material adapted to be contained in said flask, a pattern plate, said pattern plate closing the side of said flask opposite said tank, a pattern on said pattern plate extending into said flask and spaced inwardly from the edges thereof, said shelf extending over said molding material at least as far as the edges of said pattern, a diaphragm attached to the lower edges of said tank and overlying said diaphragm support, means to apply a vacuum to said tank whereby said diaphragm may be drawn up thereinto, and means to apply a pressure in said tank behind said diaphragm whereby said diaphragm is forced into engagement with said molding material adapted to be contained in said flask, said diaphragm adapted to be urged outwardly under said diaphragm support and downward- 1y, compressing said molding material around the edges of said pattern adapted to be supported in said flask and to applying a pressure to said molding material above said pattern.
2. The molding machine recited in claim 1 wherein said tank has a lower peripheral edge thereon and said diaphragm is clamped between said tank and said diaphragm support.
