ROMULUS A. EDDY, OF EAST SAGINAVV, MIGH., ASSIGNOR OF TWVO-THIRDS TO JOHN S. ESTABROOK AND SAMUEL S. GARIGUES, OF SAME PLACE.
, FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 282,868, dated August '7, 1883.
Application filed May 12, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoMULUs A. EDDY, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fire-kindler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectionalview of the same, and Fig. 3 is a crosssection.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures;
My invention has relation to fire-kindl'ers; and it consists in the improved construction of the *same, whichwill be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
My improved fire-kindler consists of a cylindrical casing;A, of pap,er, pasteboard lor thin wooden splints or veneers, having a con ical or tapering top, B, and a closed bottom, 0. This casing is filled with a compound of sawdust, soaked with kerosene-oil or naphtha, as shown at D, a rod being inserted through the compound during the process of filling the casing, so as to form a central flue or opening, E, open at the top at a in the apex of the cone and at the bottom at 0. After the casing has been filled and the filling packed closely together the rod is removed, so as to leave the flue E. The casing hasanumber of apertures,
b, in its sides, as shown. After the casing has been filled with the compound it is dipped in -melted resin, after which it is ready for use.
I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to any particular compound or any particular manner of preparing the compound. By making the kindler with the con tral fiue, E, and airholes b it will burn freely after it has once been ignited, so as to start a fire in a very brief space of time.
' I am aware that fire-kindlers have been made before of combustible material in the form of a flat disk having a central aperture, and I am also aware that fire-kindlers have been made by inclosing powdered coke and other combustible material in a paper package. My invention, however, differs from both of these forms of fire-kindlers in the improved construction of my casing or envelope; and
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is, therefore The improved fire-kindler herein shown and described, consisting of the cylindrical casing A, having'a conical top, B, and air-holes b, providedwith a central fine, E, and filled with a suitable combustible compound, substantially as set forth. a r
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. L
