EARTH-MOVING EQUIPMENT CUTTING EDGE CONSTRUCTION Filed Jan. 27, 1956 4 FIG-.3) .14 24 .12 I as ATTO 2N EY-E,
nite States EARTH-MOVING EQUIPMENT CUTTING EDGE CONSTRUCTION Richard B. Reinhard, Columbus, Shin Application January 27, 1956, Serial No. 561,760
2 Claims. (Cl. 37-141) pending application for Patent Serial No. 480,419 filed January 7, 1955, titled Improved Loading Bucket Cutting Edge Construction.
' An object of the invention is to provide a cutting edge construction in which the tooth elements may be inserted and withdrawn from the construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cutting edge construction in which the tooth elements may be selectively positioned in the construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutting edge construction which is highly practical, utilitarian and suitable for the purpose intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of an earth-moving shovel-bucket incorporating the novel cutting edge construction therein, with portions broken away and shown in section for the purpose of clarity;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure l and further showing an extended position of the tooth elements in broken lines;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view takensubstantially on line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a fragmentary portion of the shovel-bucket is indicated generally at 10, said bucket comprising a body 14 including a bottom wall 11 having a front end 13 which has a beveled cutting edge 16. As shown in the drawing there is an upstanding end wall 12 positioned on one side edge of the bottom wall 11 and secured thereto. A blade element 18 having a rearward end 19 and a forward end 21 provided with a beveled cutting edge 22 is positioned below the bottom wall 11 so that it is spaced from the bottom wall and extends from one side edge or end wall 12 to theother side edge or end wall (not shown), with the beveled cutting edge 22 forwardly of the front end 13 of the bottom wall 11. A plurality of spacer blocks designated by the numeral 26 arranged in transverse spaced relation are interposed in the space between the blade element 18 and the bottom wall 11 and supported on the blade element. Each of the blocks has on the forward end a beveled cutting edge 28. The blocks are so arranged that the beveled cutting edges are in registry with the beveled cutting edge 16 of the bottom wall 11 of the bucket 10. The spaces between adjacent spacer blocks Lates ii element 18 has forwardly opening notches 40 which are coextensive in width with the grooves 30. Fastening means or rivets 24 extend through the blade element 18, the spacer blocks 26, the bottom wall 11 of the bucket 10 and fixedly secure the blade element and supported spacer blocks to the bottom wall of the bucket.
The base wall 31 of each groove 30 has a shelf 48 in alignment therewith and projects beyond the rearward end 19 of .the blade element 18. Upstanding lugs 52 and 54 provided with apertures 56 and 58 respectively, are on the opposite sides of each shelf 48. The top surface of each of the shelves 48 is formed with a transversely extending semi-cylindrical channel 50 connecting the apertures 56 and 58 of the lugs 52 and 54, as clearly shown vin Figure l.
Designated by the numeral 34 are a plurality of tooth elements each having a forward end 33 provided with an enlarged head 38 having a beveled cutting edge 36 which is conformably shaped to that of the beveled edges 16,
22, and 28, of the bottom wall 11, blade element 18, and
spacer blocks 26 respectively, and having the portion adjacent the rearward end conformably shaped to be received with a shelf 48 and the adjacent lugs 52 and 54. Each of the tooth elements 34 is insertable within a groove 30, so that the beveled cutting edge 36 is forwardly of or flush with the beveled cutting edges 16, 22, and 28, of the bottom wall 11, blade element 18, and spacer blocks 26, with the portion 35 received within the adjacent shelf 48 and the lugs 52 and 54. The portion 35 of the tooth elements 34 are formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced transversely extending bottom channels 42 and 44 of semi-cylindrical shape, the bot: tom channels being selectively registrable with the bottom channel 50 in the various adjusted positions of the tooth spacer blocks 26.
Removable fastening means or retaining pins 60 are engageable through the apertures 56 and 58 of the lugs 52 and 54 and through the transverse bore defined by the channels and either of channels 42 and 44, the retaining pins 61) including intermediate threaded portions 62 which engage with threads in the apertures 58 of the lugs 54.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
