Description

March 25, 1958 R. J. CLOHECY ETAL 2,827,895
SCALP MASSAGING AND DANDBUFF REMOVING APPARATUS Filed Oct. 5, 195a Z I 4 A INVENTOR..
United States Patent SCALP MASSAGING AND DANDRUFF REMOVING APPARATUS Robert J. Clohecy and Boyd Hustead, Smithfield, Pa.
Application October 5, 1956, Serial No. 614,145
4 Claims. (Cl. 128-67) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for and method of removing dandruff, and it is among the objects thereof to provide an implement of a size to be gripped by the hand for manipulation around the scalp having a plurality of hollow tube-like protuberances made of rubber, or the like, said implement having a series of rods attached to a common plunger for displacement through the central hollow portions, or capillaries, of said protuberances.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a massaging implement which shall be adapted to remove dandruif from the hair and scalp by compounding it with the natural or applied oils of the hair and scalp to form beads of dandruif which are worked into the capillaries or hollow central portions of the massaging protuberances and displaced therefrom by rod-like members.
We are aware that massaging devices of rubber with brushes and protuberances solid and hollow have been heretofore proposed for use in invigorating scalps. Also that attempts have been made to remove dandruff loosened by such massaging implements, as by the application of a vacuum to the capillaries communicating with the ends of the rubber protuberances. Such attempts have not, however, relied upon the displacement of dandruif particles through capillaries of the massaging implement from which they are displaced by depressible rods.
The invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded view of a combined massaging implement and dandrulf remover embodying the principles of this invention;
Figure 2, a side elevational view of one of the massaging elements cutaway;
Figure 3, a top plan view, partially in cross-section, taken along the line 33, Figure 1;
Figure 4, a plan view taken along the line 4-4, Figure 1, and
Figure 5, a similar view taken along the line -5, Figure 1.
With reference to the several figures of the drawing, the numeral 1 generally designates a massage implement made of molded rubber having protuberances 2 integrally formed therewith, the protuberances having hollow centers or capillaries 3 which may be rounded, square, diamond shape, etc., in cross-section. Disposed above the massaging head is a plunger 4 having rods 5 disposed in the capillaries 3, there being as many rods as there are capillaries, nine being shown in Figure 5 of the drawing. The plunger is normally held in a retracted position by thereof with a portion 2,827,895 P en a 5, 1958 "Ice means of a coil spring 6, Figure 1, which abuts the massaging head 1 at one end and a cross plate 7 of the plunger at the other end. A housing 8 is mounted on the massage implement, the housing having a recess or chamber 9 of the shape of the cross plate 7 of the plunger and is provided with an opening 10 through which the cylindrical portion of plunger 4 projects in the manner shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The massaging head 1 is provided with a shoulder 11 against which the lower edge 12 of the housing 8 abuts in the manner shown in Figure 2, and the housing 8 is further provided with a flared portion 13 for ease of gripping, as between the forefinger and the thumb when applying it to the scalp.
In the use of the above-described massage implement, the housing 8 is gripped as described, and the rubber massage head 11 is placed on the scalp with the protuberances slightly pressing on the scalp. In this position, spring 6 normally retracts the plunger so that the rods 5 are at the top of the capillaries in the massage head, as shown in Figure 1. By subjecting the implement to a rubbing or revolving movement over the scalp, the scalp is invigorated by rubbing contact of the protuberances 2 and at the same time, the dandruff 3a is loosened and rolled into small beads and displaced through the capillaries 3. This is because the natural or applied oil of the scalp produces sutficient adhesive action to sort of ball or bead up the dandruff. When the capillaries 3 are partially filled with thedandruif, it is displaced by pressing the plunger 4 and the implement is again ready for use.
The abovedescribed mechanism has the two-fold function of invigorating the scalp to stimulate a healthy hair growth condition and also to positively and demonstrably remove dandruff by the mechanical action of the rubber protuberances of the massage head with the central capillaries for gathering the accumulated dandruff upon contact of the capillaries in the act of massaging the scalp.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the detailsof construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
We claim:
l. A device for massaging and removing dandruff from the hair and scalp comprising a massaging head of resilient material having flexible hollow protuberances extending therefrom, a plunger head having rods in alignment with and adapted to extend through said hollow protuberances and a housing for said plunger and rods, said housing having a top gripping portion and a skirted portion for assembling said plunger and head therein.
2. A device for messaging and removing dandruff from the hair and scalp comprising a massaging head having protuberances with capillaries extending therethrough, rods for clearing said capillaries assembled on a crossplate with a cylindrical upstanding central portion, and a housing having a recess for receiving said massage head and rod assembly, the top of said housing having an opening for the cylindrical portion of rod assembly.
3. A device for massaging and removing dandruff from the hair and scalp comprising a massaging head having protuberances with capillaries extending therethrough, rods for clearing said capillaries assembled on a cross plate with a cylindrical upstanding central portion, and a housing having a recess for receiving said massage head and rod assembly, the top of said housing having an opening for the cylindrical portion of rod assembly, said housing having a curved periphery for gripping by the hand and having a depending skirt portion for enveloping the massage head.
4. A device for massaging and removing dandrufi from the hair and scalp comprising a massaging head having protuberances with capillaries extending therethrough, rods for clearing said capillaries assembled on a crossplate with a cylindrical upstanding central ,portion, and a 10 hous ng having a recess for receiving said massage head and rod assembly, the top of said housing having an'openl 4 ing for the cylindrical portion of rod assembly, said housing having a curved periphery for gripping by the hand and having a depending skirt portion for enveloping the massage head, said rod assembly being provided with spring means to normally hold said rods in the upper position of said capillaries.
