SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,694, dated August '7, 1883, Application filed March 26, 1883 (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARCUS LAFAYETTE BATTLE, of Bainbridge, in the county of Decatur and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plow,'shown as applied to a plow- -stock. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the rear part of the heel-plate. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my improvement, shown as applied to a colter. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show my improvement applied to different kinds of plows.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the operation of plowing.

The invention consists in a plow constructed with a plow -plate formed with a heel-plate, having its rear end slotted, and provided with lugs to receive a bolt for fastening the plow to the standard of a plow-stock. The plow-plate is strengthened against the pressure of the soil by braces extending from its upper part to the heel-plate and to the plow-beam, as will be hereinafter fully described.

D is a plow-plate, which may be made of any desired shape or size as the work to be done may require.

To the lower side of the plow-plate D is welded or upon it is cast the forward end of a heel-plate, E, which fits upon the forward side of the lower end of the standard B, where it is secured in place by a bolt, F, and nut G. The rear end of the heel-plate E is slotted to receive the neck of the bolt F. Uponthe upper side of the rear end of the heel-plate E, at the opposite sides of the rear end of its slot, are formed lugs H, against the forward ends of which the head of the bolt F rests to-keep the heel-plate and plow in place upon the standard. With this construction the plow D is attached to or removed from the standard B by loosening the nut G and slipping the bolt F upward until the lugs H can pass beneath the head of the said bolt, and it is secured in place by pushing the bolt F downward and tightening thesaid nut G. In the case of turning-plows the upper part of the plow D is strengthened against the pressure of the soil by the braces I J. The brace I is attached to the upper part of the plow D and to the heelplate E, and the brace J is attached to the upper part of the plow D and to the beam A. 111 the case of a colter, D, the brace I is used; but the brace J will not be required, as the upper end of the said colter will be secured to the plow-beam A. In the case of a turningplow the landside edge K of the plow-plate D may be bent forward and sharpened, as shown in Fig. 3, to adapt the said edge K to serve as a colter for separatingthe furrow-slice from the unplowed land. WVith this construction the plows can be easily and quickly attached to and removed from the plow-standard, and, when attached, will be held securely in place; and by the attachment of the heel-plate E near the center of the blade D the pressure of the soil against the plow is more central, and the plow is more easily held and guided. v

\ Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A plow formed with a heel-plate having its rear end slotted, and provided with lugs on opposite'sides of the rear end of the slot, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with the beam A and the standard B, of the plow-plate D, formed with the heel-plate, having its rear end slotted and provided with the lugs F and the braces I J, substantially as herein shown and described.
