UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL C. RUGLAND, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
TAILORS MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,670, dated August '7, 1883. I
Application filed May 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, SAMUEL C. RUGLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Tailors Measure, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved measuring device for the use of tailors in taking measurements for such garments as coats and vests; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings hereunto annexed, an d which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved tailor s measuring device. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3'is a section taken on line Y Y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference are used to designate like parts throughout the several views.
This device is made in the form of a cross, of which A is the standard or upright, and B C the crossarms or horizontal bar. To the top of the upright I attach a short leather strap, D, to the outer end of which is attached a flat metallic plate, terminating in a sharp hooked point, D. To the back of the cross I attach a strip of elastic webbing, E, which passes through a slot in the end of the left-hand arm, B, and has a hook, E, attached-to its outer end. A long leather strap, F, is attached to the right-hand arm, C, and is also provided with a hook, F. To the strap F, I attach by means of a sliding clip, G, the strip of elastic webbing H, having upon its outer end the hook H, and standing out at right angles from the strap F. A slide, I, is placed upon the lower portion of the standard A, and carries upon its outer faceasmall spirit-level, J, while to each end of the slide and upon the rear side thereof I attach the strips of elastic webbing K K, provided with hooks K K. The standard and crossarms should be provided with a scale of inches andthe fractional parts thereof, and the numeration of such scales should commence at the point of intersection of the arms and standard.
The operation of my improved tailors measuring device will be as follows, to wit: The cross is laid against the breast of the person whose measure is to be taken, the standard being in a vertical position and the arm C being passed beneath the armpit of the subject, and the upper part or portion of the standard resting against the front of the shoulder and the arm B extended horizontally across the subj ect s left breast. The strap D is then extended, and the hook D is hooked into the clothing of the subject on the top of the shoulder. The elastic E-is then extended straight across the breast, and the hook E is made fast to the clothing. The leather strap F is then ex tended around the back of the subject, and the hook is made fast upon the right-hand side orbeneath the right arm. The elastic H is then extended upward at the back of the left shoulder, and the hook H is then made fast. The slide I is then moved up or down upon the standard to the required height for obtaining the waist-measure, and the hooks K K set to place, so as to hold the standard A in a true vertical position, which is readily determined by inspecting the spirit-level J. The operator then places the ring at the end of his measuringtape aroundthe pin or stud L, proj ecting from the face of the cross at the intersection of the standard and cross-arms, and using the stud as an initial point, takes all the necessary measurements in a rapid and accurate manner. Then, by placing the tapering around the stud M on the face of the movable slide I, and using that stud as an initial point, all the necessary waist-measurements may be easily taken.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s 1 In a device for measuring garments, the combination, with the standard A, having arms B C and stud L, of the attaching-straps D E F, carrying hooks at their ends, the sliding clip G on the strap F, said clip carrying a strap, H, having hook H, and the slide I on the standard A, said slide having a stud, M, and carrying a spirit-level, J, and straps K K, 113V". ing hooks K K, all as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set'my hand and seal. I
SAMUEL C. RUGLAND. [L. s.] Witnesses:
