F. H. ULLRICH.
Tailors Measure.
N0.167,957 PatentedSept.21,1875.
ATTORNEYS.
N.PETER5. FNOTO-LITMOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. n C.
UNITED STATES PATENT Qrrtcn- FRIEDRICH H. ULLRICH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAILORS MEASURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l67,957, dated September 21, 1875; application filed August 6, 1875. I
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH H. ULL- RIOH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tailors Measure, of which thefollowing is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved tailors measure shown as applied to the body; Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, detail front and side view of the hip-clasps 5 and Figs. 4, 5, and 6, detail front, top, and side views of the beltclasp.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. My invention relates to an improved tailors measure, by whichthe different dimensions of the body can be taken quickly, conveniently, and accurately, to enable the tailor to produce a good lit, and furnish a basis for an improved system and apparatus for drafting the patterns.
The invention consists of a graduated belt, with suitable back clasp and sliding hip-clasps, to which a detachable measure is hung for taking the difl'erent measures required.
In the drawing, A represents a belt of suitable material that is graduated in any suitable manner to be adjusted around the body immediately above the hips, and closed by a clasp, B, at the back in such a manner that the belt fits tightly to the body, and that clasp B rests exactly in the spine. Clasp B is firmly attached to one end of the belt and the other sliding end by its pivoted top plate B that is set into a slotted top flange of the base-plate of the clasp, so as to clamp the beltends firmly together without perforating the belt or injuring the face ofthe same in any manner. The face of the belt is further graduated, besides the measure giving the size of the waist, with a suitable subdivision at the sides, computed in proportion therewith, so that by reading the waist-measure the same number indicates at the sides the exact hippoints. Sliding hip-clasps orindicators O are then moved to the corresponding numbers of the gradations, and a common tape-measure, D, applied thereto for measuring the different parts of the body from the hip-points. The hip-clasp 0 has a pivoted cross-pin, a, that is bent at the lower end into a hook-eye, b. The tape-measure D is mounted with a perforated end plate, and hung to the hook-eye b, the cross-bar a being then seated into a slotted flange, d, at the lower end of the base-plate of the hip-clasp, so that thereby not only the hip-clasp is firmly secured to the belt, but also the tape-measure prevented from getting out of the hook-eye of the cross-bar a. The bottom flange d acts as a kind of locking device to the same until the cross-bar is swung out of the slot, and thereby the detaching of the tape-measure permitted for taking measures not connected with the hip-belt. The belt forms the basis from which different measures are taken, which are afterward plotted for constructing the patterns by a system and apparatus which forms the subject of a separate patent application.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The sliding hip-indicators to clasp, having a pivoted cross-pin with hook-eye locking into a slotted flange of its base-plate, and retaining a tape-measure securely in the eye part, substantially as and for the purpose described.
