Description

A.- E. 'MA'TTHEY HAIR CLIPPER Filed Aug. 22 1956 March 4, 1958 v IN VEN TOR. ALBERT E. MATTHEY ATTORNEY HAIR CLIPPER Albert E. Matthey, Overland Park, Kans.
Application August 22, 1956, Serial No. 605,551
1 Claim. (Cl. 30-201) This invention relates in general to hair cutting devices and in particular to an electric hair clipper in which the comb element may be multiplied to cut hair at difierent lengths.
In the ordinary electric or hand hair clipper a reciprocating toothed element rides transversely across a fixed toothed element or comb to effect the cutting of the hair.
In order to cut hair at different lengths the manipulator of the clipper must skillfully guide the instrument holding it at difierent angles to the persons head or must use a hand comb which must be carefully positioned in relation to the length of hair desired.
In giving crew cuts and similar hair cuts where the length of the hair remaining should be fairly even over a large area it is a definite advantage to be able to use the clippers without exerting any special effort or skill to obtain an even cut.
It is therefore the primary object of my invention to provide a hair clipper with multiple combs or cutting blades which may be assembled in any desired number to cut hair at a multiple of predetermined lengths.
Another object of my invention is to provide a set of cutting blades which will be keyed one with the other for precise registration.
And one more object of the invention is to provide multiple blades with slotted openings for easy and rapid application and removal in setting up the clippers for different length of hair.
Other objects and advantages as Well as the construction and use of my invention will be apparent by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a conventional hair clipper with parts being broken away to better illustrate certain other parts.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a hair clipper with a multiple of cutting blades assembled for cutting hair at a predetermined length.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of one of the blades comprising my invention.
Referring now to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 designates the body of a conventional electric hair clipper with reciprocating blade 2 adapted to move in cutting relation to fixed blade 3, fastening members 4 holding blade 3 securely to the body of the clipper.
Blade 3 has a recess 5 in which head 6 of the fastening nitcd States Patent 0 2,825,132 Patented Mar. 4, 1958 lce member 4 may be received, a reduced opening 7 in the blade 3 receiving the stem of the fastening member 4.
The device thus far described is one form of a conventional hair clipper. My invention comprises the addition to this hair clipper of a multiple set of fixed blades 8, each being provided with a reduced opening 9 through which the stern of the fastening member 4 may pass. Each blade 8 has a recess 10 and a slotted opening 11 leading from the rear edge 12 of the blade to the reduced opening 9 whereby the blade 8 may be slid into and out of position on the fastening member 4.
Each blade 8 is also provided with a boss or extension 13 which closely fits the recess 10 in the adjacent blade or the recess 5 in the first blade 3 for effecting positive registration of all of the blades when assembled.
The fastening member or stud 4 may be of a length suitable to secure any number of blades which it is found expeditious to use with the hair clipping device.
The comb edge 14 of each blade may be angularly disposed to align with the angle of the original blade 2.
In using the hair clipper comprising my invention the operator determines the length of hair desired, partially unscrews the fastening members 4, slides into place the desired number of blades 8, the slots 11 permitting entry of the blades until boss 13 registers with recess 5 of the first blade and recesses 10 :of the succeeding blades. Tightening the fastening member will securely hold all the blades together and in precise registration, the comb portions 14 being in perfect alignment. The clipper can now be used in the conventional manner cutting the hair at a height determined by the number of blades 8 used.
Obviously, changes in form, proportion and details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention and I reserve all rights to such changes as come within the scope of these specifications and the claim which follows.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a clipping device having a fixed toothed blade and a reciprocating toothed blade, a plurality of identical removable fixed toothed blades in registering relation with the first mentioned fixed toothed blade variably extending the distance between the reciprocating toothed blade and the object being clipped, one or more recesses in one side of each of the removable fixed toothed blades, a boss on the opposite side of each removable fixed toothed blade, said boss being in alignment with its respective recess, the bosses on one removable fixed toothed blade engaging the recesses in an adjacent fixed toothed blade to align the removable fixed toothed blades, a slot extending from the concentric center of the boss and recess to one edge of the removable fixed toothed blade, and a fastening member adjustably extending into the clipping device through each recess and boss, the slot permitting application and removal of the removable fixed toothed blade without removal of the fastening member.
