Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. CLARE ANDERSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
LIFTING-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,245, dated May 15, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'. CLARE ANDERSON, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Lifting-J ack; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being an elevation of my invention.
This invention consists in the employment or use of a hollow stand or upright provided with a base and a pawl at its upper end, and having a rack bar fitted within it to the upper part of which a slotted lever is attached in such a manner as to raise the article to which it is applied, and to remain permanent, after raising the article by the weight of said article alone, no other adjustment of the lever being required.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a hollow stand or upright which may be of quadrilateral form and of any suitable dimensions. This stand may be of wood o-r metal, the latter material would be preferable for small and medium sized jacks, the larger implements may have wooden stands. The stand A, is provided with a base a, and at the upper partof the stand there is a socket b, in which a pawl c, is placed.
B is a bar which is fitted and allowed to slide freely up and down within the stand or upright A. This bar B, has a rack D, at one edge of it, into which rack the pawl c, catches and retains the bar B, at any desired height.
In the upper end of the rack bar B, a lever is fitted, said lever being secured in the bar by a pin D, which passes through an oblong slot c, in the lever. The front end of the lever C, near the fulcrum D, is hollowed out as shown at f, to form a good bearing surface for the article to be raised. On each side of the lever C, there is a projection g, which projections serve as stops.
The rack bar B, may be constructed of the same material as the stand, metal being employed for the lighter implements, and wood for the larger ones.
The implement is used as follows: The I stand A, is placed under the article to be raised the same being a little inclined, its base a, being in advance of its upper end, as shown in red in Fig. l. The rack bar B, is then raised until the lever C, comes in contact with the article to be raised, the pawl c, retaining the bar. When the lever C,is thus brought in contact with the article, the said lever is nearly in a horizontal position, as shown in red. The operator then depresses the larger end of lever C, and thereby elevates the article on the shorter curved part f, of the lever. As the larger end of lever C, descends it gradually falls back or approaches the operator in consequence of the oblong slot e, through which the fulcrum pin D, passes, and the lugs or projections g, at the sides of the lever coming in contact with the bar B, t-he latter and its stand A, is shoved forward to a vertical position. When the longer part of the lever C, is fully depressed the article on its shorter curved part f, will be at the side of the fulcrum pin D, toward where the power was applied to the lever, and consequently the weight of .the article alone will retain the lever in proper position, no eXtra appliances being required for the purpose.
This device it will be seen is extremely simple and may be very economically constructed. When the implement is being carried about a pin ait, may be passed transversely through the stand A, and bar B, to prevent the latter casually slipping out from lthe same.
I-Iaving'thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszl. The rock-bar'B, and the lever C, the latter being provided with an oblong slot e, through which and the upper part of the bar B, 'the fulcrum'pin D, passes, the rackbar being fitted in a stand A, or equivalent device, to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
2. I further claim in connection with the lever C, and rack-bar B, arranged as shown, the lugs or project-ions g, attached to the lever and at such a distance from the bar B, to operate as specified.
W. CLARE ANDERSON.
