'6 Claims. (Cl. 126190) This invention relates to cooking ranges, and more particularly to means for making a seal between the oven door and the front wall of a cooking range when the door is closed.

Among the several objects of the invention may be noted the provision or" an improved means for making a tight seal between the oven door and the front wall of a cooking range comprising heat-resistant sealing strips and means for mounting the strips so that they are readily removable and replaceable when necessary without requiring disassembly of any parts of the range; and the provision of sealing means of the class described which is economical and easy to install on a range. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises the constructions hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being indicated in the following claims.

Referring to the drawings, there is indicated at 1 a cooking range having a top 3, side walls 5 and a front wall 7. The front wall has a rectangular opening 9 for access to the oven chamber 11 of the range. At 13 is indicated the oven door. This is pivoted on a horizontal axis adjacent the lower edge of the opening 9 for swinging movement between a closed position extending vertically upward and confronting portions of the front wall 7 surrounding the opening 9, and an open position extending forward from the range. The door may be pivoted in any suitable conventional manner, details of the hinge arrangement not being material so far as this invention is concerned. Reference may be made to the copending coassigned application of Almer H. Brodbeck for Door, Serial No. 559,207, filed January 16, 1956, for door details.

In accordance with this invention, means is provided for making a tight seal between the door 13 and the front wall 7 of the range when the door is closed. This sealing means comprises two vertically extending sealing strips each designated 15 mounted on the front wall of the range at opposite sides of the opening 9, and a horizontally extending sealing strip 17 extending between the vertical strips 15 above the opening 9. These strips 15 and 17 are formed of a resilient, slippery, heat-resistant material, preferably silicone rubber, which is adapted to withstand a temperature of 600 F., for example. The strips 15 and 17 are of identical cross section, each having a resilient bead portion 19 of hollow generally semicircular shape in cross section and a rib portion 21 of T-shape in cross ssection projecting from the flat side of the semicircular bead portion 19. The T-shaped rib portion 21 is of solid cross section. The flat side of the semicircular bead portion 19 is wider than the head portion of the T-Shape of the rib.

Each of the strips 15 and 17 is removably mounted in a strip-retaining channel member of C-shape in cross section. Thus, there are two vertically extending channel members at opposite sides of the opening 9, each designated 23, and a horizontally extending channel member 25 of G-shape in cross section above the top of the opening 9. The members 23 extend from below the level of the bottom of the opening 9 to above the level of the top of the opening 9. The member 25 extends between members 23 from near one member 23 to near the other. The front wall 7 is formed with grooves 23a receiving members 23 and a groove 25a receiving member 25. The channel members 23 and 25 are generally identical, each being formed of sheet metal and having loops 27 struck out from its back wall or web extending through holes 29 in the front wall 7 of the range. The channel members are secured in position with their open sides forward in the channel members so that the strips are slidably keyed in the channel members. The stem portions of the T-shape of the strips project out of the channel members through the open sides of the channel members, and the resilient bead portions 19 of the strips are disposed outward of the channel members for engagement by the door 13 when the latter closes. The strips, being slippery, are readily longitudinally slidable in the channel members for endwise removal therefrom. Replacement strips are readily inserted in the channel members by longitudinally sliding them into the channels. The lower ends of the side channels 23 may be pinched as indicated at 33 after the strips are in place to keep the strips from sliding downward out of these channels under their own weight.

In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.

As various changes could be made in the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

We claim:

1. in a cooking range having an oven, a front wall provided with a rectangular opening for the oven and a door pivoted on a horizontal axis adjacent the lower edge of the opening for swinging movement between a closed position extending vertically upward and confronting portions of the front Wall surrounding the opening and an open position extending forward, means comprising vertically extending sealing strips at the sides of the opening and a horizontally extending sealing strip above the opening for making a seal between the door and the front wall when the door is in closed position, the vertical strips being separate from one another and the horizontal strip being separate from the vertical strips, vertically extending strip-retaining channel members of C shape in cross section secured on the front face of the front wall at opposite sides of the opening, and a horizontally extending strip-retaining channel member of C- shape in cross section secured on the front face of the front wall between said vertically extending channel members above the opening, the open sides of all of said channel members being directed forward, said strips having rib portions received in the channel members whereby the strips are slidably keyed in the channel members, and resilient bead portions outward of the channel members for engagement by the door, said strips being longitudinally slidable in the channel members for endwise removal therefrom.

2. In a cooking range as set forth in claim 1, said strips being made of heat-resistant silicone rubber which is slippery so that each strip may be readily removed from its respective channel member by longitudinally sliding it endwise out of one end of the respective channel member.

In a cooking range as set forth in claim 1, each of said channel members being made of sheet metal and having loops struck out from its back wall extending through holes in the front wall of the range, and being secured in position by means of spring clips received in the loops on the inside of the front wall.

In a cooking range as set forth in claim 1, the resilient head portion of each of the strips being of hollow generally semicircular shape in cross section and the rib portion of each strip being solid and of T-shape in cross section and projecting from the flat side of the semicircular resilient portion, the head portion of the T-shape being received in the channel member, and the stem portion of the T-shape projecting out of the channel member through the open side of the channel member.

5. In a cooking range as set forth in claim 4, the flat side of the semicircular resilient head portion being wider than the head portion of the T-shape.

In a cooking range having an oven, a front Wall provided with a rectangular opening for the oven and a door pivoted on an axis adjacent one edge of the opening for swinging movement between a closed position with respect to the opening and confronting portions of the front wall surrounding the opening and an open position extending forward, means comprising first and second sealing strips extending along the two sides of the opening at right angles to the door axis and a third sealing strip extending along the side of the opening opposite the door axis for making a seal between the door and the front wall when the door is in closed position, the strips being separate from one another, first and sec ond strip-retaining channel members secured on the front face of the front wall extending along said two sides of the opening, and a third strip-retaining channel member secured on the front face of the front Wall extending between said first and second channel members along the side of the opening opposite the door axis, said strips having rib portions received in the channel members whereby the strips are slidably keyed in the channel members, and resilient bead portions outward of the channel members for engagement by the door, the third channel member being shorter than the distance between the first and second channel members, said strips being longitudinally slidable in the channel members for endwise removal therefrom.
