(Cl. 222-192) This invention relates to :pouring dispensers for :liquor bottles and the like, and refers more particularly to .a pouring device of the type adapted .to he installed in the mouth :of a bottle and w'hichhas a narrow tubular spout through which a fine, smoothly 'flowing stream of fluid may issue "to facilitate :dispensing of small quantities of liquor 'or the like from tthe bottle.

Still another object of this invention resides in the provision of .a pouring dispenser of the character .described wherein the flag which is customarily attached to such dispensers to display the trademark of the liquor or other beverage contained in the bottle is readily detachable to permit a different flag to be attached thereto when the dispenser is transferred from one bottle to another.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.

The accompanying drawing illustrates one complete example of the physical embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which: 7

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view similar to Figure 2 but showing the dispenser installed on a bottle having a plug-type stopper.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates generally a dispenser embodying the principles of this invention and which is adapted to be installed on the top of a liquor bottle 6 or similar container of either the screw cap or the plug stopper type.

'14, 1958 The dispenser comprises, in general, a tubular spout 7 having a lower :inlet portion :8 and an upper outlet por- .tion 9, Between the inlet and-outlet portions of the spout, and integral :therewith, is a;stopper portion 10 comprising .a tcircumferential flange extending radially from the spent .and adapted 'to overlie the mouth of a bottle. Readily detachably mounted on the dispenser is a rigid flag Iul upon .which:a trademark or other indicia may be delineated :to identify the contents of the bottle. Preferably-the dispensenand :flag are molded from plastic material.

The outlet portion of the spout is preferably curved along its length to ifaeilitate pouring therefrom, and its mouth 12 defines a :rim which is disposed at a small angle to the vertical. The inlet portion .of :the ;spout is preferably provided with ;a pair of spaced part "circumferential ridges 16 on its exterior whereby :the :spout .anay be securely engaged in thebore ofianaunularplug :17 of corkior'the likeywhich may in turn beanugty iinserted into the mouth of ahottle, as shown .in Figure 5.. The bores 18 :and 19 .ofthe inlet and outlet portions :Offllfi spout are of course continuous with one another to provide for-free how of liquor :therethrough.

The .inlet portion of the spout also has an air vent passage 2.0, separate from the here 1113;, which extends upwardly ,ttrom rthe tbettom of the inlet portion and .a very small distance into the outlet portion. A lateral connecting bore 21 communicates the air vent passage 20 with the atmosphere at the side of the spout opposite its mouth.

Flanking the air vent inlet are a pair of parallel, spaced apart, upright ribs 22 which are integral with the spout and provide for securement of the flag 11 thereto. The flag has an integral substantially channel shaped securement member 23, on one side edge portion, near its bottom, which cooperates with the ribs 22 in readily detachably securing the flag to the spout. When the securement member is slid endwise downwardly onto the ribs, its flanges 24 embrace them, and inwardly projecting lugs 25 on these flanges, at the tops thereof, engage behind the upper parts of the ribs to secure the flag in place.

The upper end of the channel-like securement member is closed by an abutment wall 27 which engages the upper ends of the ribs to define the lowermost position of sliding engagement of the securement'member on the ribs and also to close the upper end of the passage 28 con jointly defined by the ribs and the securement member. Since the air vent inlet opens to the passage 28, the vent inlet is thus protected against the entry of dirt and other foreign matter thereinto by the ribs and securement member.

When the dispenser of this invention is to be installed on a screw top bottle, an annular cap 30 is used therewith. The cap has a cylindrical side wall 31 which is internally threaded to cooperate with the threads on the neck of the bottle, and its top wall 32 has a central aperture 33 which permits the cap to he slipped over the outlet portion of the spout. It will be understood that the ribs 22 project radially from the spout a small enough distance to permit them to be cleared by the apertured top wall of the cap, and that the flag is detached from the dispenser when the cap is installed thereon. When the screw cap is in place, a coaxial pilot portion 34 on the stopper portion 10 projects up into the central aperture in the cap to hold the dispenser centered in the liquor bottles and the like which may be installed on either a screw top or a plug stopper type of bottle, and which has a flag which is readily detachable to facilitate its transfer from one dispenser to another. It will also be apparent that the dispenser of this invention has its air vent protected against the entry of dirt and foreign matter thereinto, and that such protection to the air vent opening is afforded by the same means whereby the flag is readily detachably secured in place.

What I claim as my invention is:

l. A pouring dispenser for liquor bottles and the like, of the type comprising a stopper for the mouth of a bottle and a tubular spout having a bored inlet portion extending below the stopper to project down into the bottle and an outlet portion projecting above the stopper and having a bore communicating with that of the inlet portion: characterized by a vent passage extending lengthwise in the wall of the lower portion of the spout, opening to the bottom of the inlet portion and to one side of the spout adjacent to the top of the stopper, by which vent air may be admitted to the bottle during pouring; further characterized by a pair of spaced apart, parallel, upright ribs on said side of the spout, one on each side of the vent opening; and further characterized by a detachable flag having a substantially channel shaped securernent portion endwise slidably engageable with said ribs and having an abutment portion closing the upper end of said channel portion and overlying the upper ends of 4 said ribs when the flag is in place to provide a stop defining the lowermost position of the flag on the spout, said securement portion cooperating with said ribs to prevent entry of foreign matter into said vent and to define a downwardly opening passage which communicates said vent with the atmosphere.

2. In a pouring dispenser for a liquor bottle or the like having a tubular spout adapted to project above the top of a bottle on which the dispenser is installed: an integral radially projecting circumferential flange on said spout, intermediate the ends thereof, adapted to engage the top of a bottle; means on the lower portion of the spout engageable with the inner surface of an annular plug to removably secure the spout in the bore thereof; a cap having a cylindrical internally threaded side wall adapted to engage threads on the top of a bottle, and an annular inwardly projecting flange providing a downwardly facing shoulder adapted to encircle said spout and to engage over said flange on the spout and clamp it against the top of a bottle; a pair of spaced apart, parallel, upright ribs on one side of the spout, said ribs projecting only a short distance radially from the exterior of the spout so as not to interfere with slipping the cap axially on and off the spout; and a flag having a substantially channel shaped secnrement portion endwise slidably engageable with said ribs on the spout to provide for detachable connection therewith, said spout having an air vent passage in its side wall, opening to its bottom and externally to one side thereof, between said ribs, and said channel shaped securement portion protecting the opening of the vent passage between the ribs to prevent entry of foreign matter into the same.
