flfT T f 4 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
HENRY H. BROWVN, OF SPENOERPORT, NEV YORK.
FRUIT-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 281,830, dated July 24,1883. Application filed July .24, 1882. (No model.)
"To aZZ whom it may concern:
, cross-head and follower in the line of the screw. Fig. 4 is a diagram showing a plan of the barrel-head and the follower pressing thereon.
My improvement relates to devices for packing apples and other fruits in barrels, and is of that kind where two spring arms attached to a cross-head catch under the lower chine of the barrel, and a screw and follower are used to press the barrel-head in place.
The invention consists in an improved construction of parts connected with the screw and cross-head, whereby the follower is swiveled in place, and is made more effective in operation, as h reinafter described.
In the drawings, A shows a crosshead of ordinary form, and B B show two spring-arms made of metal, attached to the cross-head by bolts or otherwise, and provided at the lower ends with hooks a c,- which catch and hold under the lower chine of the barrel, while the cross-head rests over the top of the barrel.
0 is the screw-shaft which passes through the cross-head, is provided with a handle, D, at the top by which it is turned, and with a follower, E, at the bottom, which rests on top of the barrel-head, and by which the barrelhead is forced in place on top of the fruit.
This construction is similar to other presses now in use.
My improvement is as follows: V
b is a casting bolted or screwed 011 top of the cross-head, through which the screw -shaft passes loosely, the casting forming a guide to the screw-shaft. I
c is a bearing screwed or bolted on the under side of thecross-head, and forming a nut to the screw, the nut portion extending up nearly through the cross-head and resting in a cavity formed for its reception.
d is a' casting bolted on top of the follower E. The end of the screw -shaft which passes through this casting is turned down, forming a journal, f, with a shoulder, 19, above it,which rests on top of the casting, and a pin, g, is passed crosswise through the journal, below the casting, thus fastening the follower to the end of the screw, but swiveling it in place, so that it can turn freely in either direction.
By the use of the two bearings b c on opposite sides of the cross -bar the cross -bar is greatly strengthened, the screw-shaft is ce11- tered and guided in a true vertical line, and a nut is also formed of such extent as to allow the screw to operate properly. By reducing the lower end of the screw, forming a journal thereon, passing a pin through the journal, and employing a bearing 011 top of the follower, as described, the follower is made an attachment to the press itself, being carried with it, and it is swiveled so as to be instantly turned in any direction.
In barreling fruit the arms are hooked indifferently upon the barrel, and the follower.
frequently comes in the wrong position, or in line with the joints of the barrel-heading. In such case it is but the work of a moment to turn it in one direction or the other, so that it will stand crosswise of the barrel-head, as shown in Fig. 4. WVhere a disconnected and separate block or follower is used, as in ordi nary pressesof the kind, it is difficult to adjust the follower crosswise of the barrel-heading, and much time is consumed. It will be noticed in this case that by attaching the follower to the end of the screw it moves up and down with the screw, and therefore can be elevated by turning the screw back, and does not have to be handled separately, as in ordinary presses of the kind.
Having thus described my invention, I disclaim, simply and broadly, a fruit-press consisting of a cross-head, spring-arms, a screwshaft, and follower. M
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the cross-bar A, provided with the smooth bearing 1) on its upper my name in the presence of two subscribing side and the nut c on its under side, the screw- Witnesses. shaft C, provided with the journal f, pin 9, and shoulder p, and the follower E, provided 5 with the-bearing cl, substantially as and for the \Vitnesses:
purpose herein specified. R. F. OsGooD, In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed J ACOB SPAI-IN.
