(Cl. 197172) This invention relates in general to inked ribbons for use on typewriters, adding machines, etc., and more particularly to inked ribbons provided with uninked attaching ends or tabs facilitating handling of ribbons in and about typewriters, etc., without soiling the hands of an operator.

It is the primary object of this invention to provide inked typewriter ribbons embodying at one of their ends elongated, flexible, uninked threading and attaching members constructed to facilitate threading of the ribbons through the various guides and spools of typewriters and attaching of the ribbons to the spoods of the typewriters for properly mounting such ribbons on the typewriters without soiling the hands or fingers of operators.

Another object of the invention is the provision of inked typewriter ribbons as referred to above in which the elongated, flexible threading and attaching members partly overlap with their inner ends the end portions of the inked ribbon members of the typewriter ribbons and in which the inked ribbon members are connected to specific areas of the threading and attaching members spaced from the inner ends thereof to form typewriter ribbons having tongue-like extensions or retaining elements constructed to prevent unthreading of the typewriter ribbons from the spools of typewriters when the threading elements engage the cores of such spools.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of inked typewriter ribbons as referred to above in which the flexible threading and attachment members embody threading front portions and attaching rear portions and in which the front portions are spaced from the attaching rear portions by a line of perforations extended crosswise of the threading and attaching members to facilitate after threading operations separation of the front portions from the rear portions for proper action of the retaining elements and proper winding of the typewriter ribbons on their spools.

With these and other objects of the invention which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, reference numeral 2 indicates a typewriter ribbon embodying an inked ribbon body 3 and threading and attaching means 4 secured to one or both extremities of the inked ribbon body. Threading and attaching means 4, which are made of strips of any suitable length and material such as stiff paper or cardboard and overlap the adjoining extremity of the inked body of ribbon 2, have preferably the same Width as ribbon body 3 of ribbon 2 and include a front portion 5 and a rear portion 6 separated from front portion 5 by a score or perforated cross line 7.

Front portion 5 at its outer end is formed with a tapering tongue 8 to facilitate threading of the threading and attaching means through various guides and spools of a typewriter, and rear portion 6 includes an attached inner section 9 overlapping end portion 10 of ribbon body 3 and secured thereto by cement, glue, clips or any other convenient manner, .and a free outer section 11 extending from inner section 9 opposite ribbon body 3 in unattached relation with respect thereto.

Front portion 5 of the threading and attaching means of typewriter ribbon 2 may be used to print thereon suitable directions and informations such as color, makers name, trademark or any other data required. The typewriter ribbon may readily and easily be threaded through various typewriter guides and automatically attached to typewriter spools in which closely arranged flanges make it practically impossible to manually insert and secure ribbons to the cores of the spools. Such attachment of the described typewriter ribbons to ribbon spools is effected by threading threading and attaching means 4 through the guides of a typewriter, threading such threading and attaching means partly through slots 12 in core 14 of an empty ribbon spool 15, drawing the threading and attaching means fully through said slots in the core, separating front portion 5 from rear portion 6 by tearing threading and attaching means 4 on perforated cross line 7 and securing ribbon 2 to ribbon spool 15 by rotating the spool in the direction indicated by arrow 16 to effect tangential engagement of outer section 11 with core 14 and thus prevent withdrawal of typewriter ribbon 2 from spool 15.

Having thus described my invention:

What I claim is:

l. The combination of a typewriter ribbon spool having a slotted hub with a typewriter ribbon including an inked body and threading and attaching means secured to one end of the body in axial alignment therewith, said threading and attaching means including a threading section and an attaching section separated from the threading section by a perforated cross line, said attaching section having a front portion secured to the inked ribbon near the cross line thereof and a rear portion unsecured to said ribbon to permit a limited movement of said rear portion of the attaching section with respect to the inked body for interlocking the attaching section with the hub of the typewriter ribbon spool when the attaching section is threaded through the slotted hub portion of the spool.

2. The combination as described in claim 1, wherein the threading and attaching means are made of elongated, flexible, slightly yielding material.
