1 Claim. (Cl. 248--166) The object of my present invention is to provide a fold able stand for a typewriter and a reference or other book, having a level table for a typewriter or other article, and an inclined table for a book, or as a lectern for a speaker, the level table and the inclined table extending outwardly from each other in opposite directions, the inclined member of the two placed higher than the level member on a tripod-like supporting device forming part of the invention.

One feature of the arrangement is that a recording machine can be placed on the level table while a speaker stands in front of the lectern-book support member of the stand.

Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the stand, Fig. 2 is a vertical side view. Fig. 3 is a side View partially in cross section. Fig. 4 is a detail View showing the locking mechanism between the supporting member 6 and the table arm 10. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view of clamping members 3 and i that are attached to upper ends of members 1, and also one of the bolts 3'. Fig. 6 is a side view showing how the stand may be taken apart by removing the bolts 3' for packing in a minimum size shipping or traveling carton or case.

Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates a pair of upwardly converging leg members, 2 denotes a cross-piece tying the leg members together near their lower ends to function as a unit, 3 and 4 are cross-bars disposed at the front and rear faces of the top portions of the leg members and secured to the underside of the table member 5. The cross-bars carry a pair of bolts 3 each passing through aligned openings provided in the bars and leg members to firmly and removably secure the table member to the leg members. The numeral 6 denotes a third leg member hingedly secured at its upper end portion to the bar 4 by a hinge member 7. The numeral 3 designates a second table member foldably secured by hinge members 9 to the pair of leg members 1 at a convenient location intermediate their ends. An arm member 10 is secured to the undersurface of the table member 8 and extends between the legs 1 toward the leg 6, to receive the arm and hold it in substantially horizontal position. The locking means comprise a pair of metal plates 13 disposed on opposite sides of the leg 6, aligned substantially horizontal slots 13' in the plates, a bolt 14 shiftably disposed in the slots and held in selected position by a wing nut 14- threaded on one end of the bolt, said bolt providing a rest for the arm 10 the free end of which arm is beveled as shown. A metal strip 11 having an upturned end portion is provided on top face of the arm 10 at its free end portion, a second metal strip 12 is provided with a downwardly 2,817,486 Fatented Dec. 24, 1957 extending free end portion spaced from the leg member and receiving the upturned portion of the strip 11 in the spacing to lock the arm in place when the bolt 14 is moved to one extremity of the slots where it is disposed immediately beneath and in contact with the undersurface of the arm. The arm is released by moving the bolt 14 to the other extremity of the slots beyond the bevelled end portion of the arm and out of contact therewith.

It will be understood that the stand can be folded easily and quickly by sliding the bolt 14 in the slot 13 so the members 11 and 12 can be released, then folding table member 8 downward until it lies flat with members 1, and folding the member 6 so it lies parallel to members 1.

To set up stand from folded position have bolt 14 in rearmost position in slot 13 and be sure that members 11 and 12 are engaged as shown in Fig. 3, and bolt 14 moved forward in slot 13' so it engages the underside of table arm 10, then look bolt by tightening the said bolts wing nut 14'.

I claim:

A foldable stand for supporting a speakers papers and a recording machine or the like, comprising a tripod-like support structure including a pair of upwardly converging leg members, a rectangular plate-like table member, a pair of spaced parallel cross-bars rigidly secured to the underside of said table member and receiving the upper end portions of the leg members therebetween, a pair of fastening bolts extending through said cross-bars and the included leg portions, a third leg member hingedly secured to one of the cross-bars at a point substantially midway between the pair of bolts, whereby said leg members form a tripod supporting the said table member inclined to the horizontal, a second table member hingedly connected to the pair of leg members and disposed in a substantially horizontal position between the ends thereof, an arm rigidly secured to the undersurface of the said second table member and extending toward the third leg member and having at its free end a metal strip provided with an upturned end, means on the third leg member for receiving the free end of said arm to securely fix said second table member in the horizontal position between the ends thereof, said means comprising a pair of metal plates attached to the third leg member at opposite sides thereof and receiving the free end of the arm therebetween, a tongue member bolted to the third leg member and abutting the upper surface of said arm and receiving the upturned end of the metal strip between it and the third leg member, slots in said metal plates disposed adjacent and parallel to the underside of said arm, a bolt shiftably disposed in said slots and engaging the underside of said arm, said underside being bevelled at end of the arm, whereby when said bolt is at one extremity of the slots the arm is wedged between the bolt and tongue member to hold said second table member fixed in position, while when the bolt is at the other extremity of the slots the arm is released to provide for easy folding of said table member.
