2 Claims. (Cl. 1D0- 102) This invention relates to a press, and more particularly to a device for use in compressing garbage and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a press which is adapted to be used for compressing garbage into a bale or compact bundle whereby it can be more easily handled and disposed of.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garbage disposal assembly which includes a housing that is adapted to receive a quantity of garbage or waste material which is to be disposed of, and whereby there is provided a plunger or piston which serves to compress the garbage or waste material into a compact bundle so that the compact bundle of garbage can be readily disposed of in any suitable manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garbage disposal device which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the garbage disposal assembly, constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1t) designates a horizontally disposed base, and extending upwardly from the base and secured thereto is a frame 11 which includes a plurality of vertically disposed spaced parallel beams 12.
Mounted within the upper end of the frame 11 and secured thereto in any suitable manner as for example by means of braces 13, is a hollow housing 14. The housing 14'includes vertical walls 15 and a horizontally disposed bottom wall 16, Figure 4.
Movably mounted in the housing 14 is a plunger or piston 17 which is provided with a' plurality of spaced apertures or openings 1S for a purpose to be later described. A vertically shiftable rod 19 has its upper end secured to the plunger 17, and the lower end of the rod 19 projects into a jack 20 which is mounted on the base 10.
Also mounted on the base and spaced from the jack is a motor 21 of conventional construction, and the motor 21 serves to rotate a disc 22 which has an eccentrically arranged pin 23 extending therefrom. A pivotally mounted lever 24 includes a bifurcated portion 25 which is arranged in engagement with the pin 23. The lever 24 serves to actuate the pump 26 whereby hydraulic iluid can be pumped in the jack 20 to thereby raise the rod 19 and plunger 17 as the motor 21 is actuated.
There is further provided a horizontally disposed movable bar 27 which is provided with a collar 28 that is secured to the rod 19 by means of a set screw 29. A pair of coil springs 30 have their upper ends connected to the e ce 2,817,290

Depending from the bottom wall 16 of the housing 14 and secured thereto is a limit switch 31 which includes a movable button 32 that is adapted to be engaged by the bar 27 when the bar 27 is in its raised position. Wires 33 and 34 extend from the switch 31, and the wire 33 leads to the motor 21. A wire 34 leads to an on and ofi switch 35 which can be used for controlling actuation of the motor 21. The wire 37 leads from the switch 35 to a suitable source of electrical energy, and a wire 38 leads from the source of electrical energy to an overload switch 39 which is mounted on the motor 21 in order to prevent damage to the motor when an overload occurs.
There is further provided a conduit or pipe 40 which communicates with the upper portion of the housing 14, and a manually operable valve 41 is arranged in the conduit 40. The conduit 40 is adapted to be connected to a suitable source of fluid such as water whereby the interior of the housing 14 can be washed out when desired. A conduit 42 is connected to the bottom wall 16 of the housing, and the conduit 42 serves to convey away the huid or liquid from the housing 14, there being a valve 43 in the conduit 42. An overow conduit or line 44 is arranged in communication with the upper portion of the housing 14.
Hingedly mounted on top of the housing 14 is a lid or closure member 45, there being a hinge 46 which connects the lid 45 to a wall of the housing. A lock 47 is adapted to retain the lid 45 in closed position, but the lock or latch 47 can be opened when the garbage is initially placed in the housing 14, or when the compressed bale of garbage is to be removed from the housing 14. A valve member 48 is provided for permitting hydraulic ilud in the jack 20 to discharge into a suitable reservoir, whereby the rod 19 can be quickly lowered, and a flexible cable 49 is adapted to be actuated by means of a knob or handle 50 whereby the valve 48 can be easily opened and closed.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a press which is especially suitable for use in compacting garbage, waste material and the like. In use, with the plunger 17 in lowered position as shown in Figure 4, the latch 47 can be moved to permit the lid 45 to be swung upwardly about the hinges 46. Then, garbage of any type can be placed in the housing 14 and the lid 45 can be closed and maintained in its closed position by means of the latch 47. Then, the switch 35 is actuated to thereby energize the motor 21 and this causes the disc 22 to rotate which causes the lever 24 to pivot whereby the pump 26 is actuated so that hydraulic iluid in the jack 20 will cause the rod 19 and plunger 17 to rise upwardly. Thus, the garbage above the plunger 17 will be compressed between the plunger 17 and the lid 45. Any uid which may be present in the garbage will drain down through the openings 18 and out through the conduit 42. After the garbage has been compacted into a small bundle, the lid 45 can be opened and the bundle of garbage can be removed and then discarded as desired. The valve 48 can be opened by means of the handle 50 when hydraulic pressure in the jack 20 is to be quickly released so as to permit the springs 30 to return the plunger 17 to its lowered position. When the interior of the housing 14 is to be cleaned or washed out, iluid such as water can be introduced into the housing through the conduit 40. When the bar 27 reaches its upper limit, it engages the button 32 on the switch 31 to thereby break the circuit to the motor 21 so that the motor 21 will stop operating. The conduit 44 serves as an overflow conduit wherebyv uid may be conveyed to any suitable locality.
While the drawings illustrate the plunger 17 moving vertically, it is to be understood that the plunger may operate in a horizontal plane if desired. By opening' the valve 48, the hydraulic uid in the jack 20 will permit the plunger 17 to return to its lowered position. The jack 20 may be operated electrically, or manuallyv if desired. Hot water may be introduced through the conduit 40.
We claim:
l. In a garbage disposal device, a horizontally disposed base, a frame extending upwardly from said base and having a housing mounted in the upper portion thereof, a lid hingedly connected to the top of said housing, a jack mounted on said base, a movable rod extending upwardly from said jack and projecting into said housing, a plunger movably mounted in said housing and connected to the upper end of said rod, a motor mounted on said base for operating said jack, said motor` adapted to be connected to a source of electrical energy, a horizontally disposed bar secured to said rod, a limit vswitch depending from said housing and electrically connected to said motor, said bar adapted to engage said limit switch when the bar iS in its raised position, coil springs extending between said bar and said base, an on and off switch electrically connected to said motor, conduits for supplying and removing uid to and from said housing, valves arranged in said conduits, there being a plurality of apertures in said plunger, and allatch for maintaining said lid inclosed position.
2. A garbage disposal device comprising a-horizontally disposed base, a frame extending upwardly from said base and having a housing mounted in the upper portion thereof, said frame including a plurality of spaced parallel beams, lbraces securing said housing in said frame, said housing including vertically disposed walls and a horizontally disposed bottom wall, a lid hingedly connected to'the Ytop of said housing, a lock for retaining the lid in closed position, a jack mounted on said base, a movable rod extending upwardly from said jack and projecting into said housing, a plunger movably mounted on said housing and connected to the upper end of said rod, a motor mounted on said base and spaced from said jack, a disc rotated by said motor and having an eccentrically arranged pin extending therefrom, a pivotally mounted lever including a bifurcated portion arranged in engagement with said pin, a pump actuated by said lever whereby hydraulic ll'uid' can be pumped to the jack to thereby raise the rod and plunger as the motor is actuated, said motor adapted to be connected to a source of electrical energy. a horizontally disposed bar secured to said rod, a limit switch depending from said housing and electrically connected to said motor, said limit switch including a movable button, said bar adapted to engage the movable button of said limit switch when the bar is in its raised position, a pair of c'oil springs extending between said bar and said zbase and 4secured thereto for normally urging the plunger to its downward position, an on and ott switch electrically connected to said motor, conduits for supplyingand removing Huid to and from the top and bottom of said housing, valves arranged in said conduits, there being aplur'ality of apertures in said plunger, and an overflow conduit arranged in communication with the upper portion 'of the housing.
