United States Patent a DISPENSER Carl F. Hofmeier, Milwaukee, Wis. Application December 10, 1956, Serial N 0. 627,506
6 Claims. (Cl. 242-554) This invention relates to dispensers and more particularly to a domestic dispenser adapted to hold and dispense wrapping materials from rolls.
In wrapping packages of food for freezing or storage it has been found to be very desirable to carry the wrapping material in a handy wall dispenser from which the material may be cut off to desired lengths for use and to have a roll of self-adhesive cellophane tape adjacent the wrapping material to seal the package.
It is an object of the invention to provide a combined dispenser which will be convenient to use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dispenser for both wrapping material and sealing tape which can be manufactured economically.
A further object is to provide a dispenser in which both the roll of wrapping material and the sealing tape may be replaced conveniently.
Further objects will become apparent upon reference to the following specification which, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, illustrates a preferred form of the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical cross-section through a dispenser, illustrating the present invention and is a section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a transverse cross-section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the right hand end of the dispenser shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary end view of the dispenser.
Referring to the drawings, the dispenser comprises a left hand end member 10, a right hand end member 12, a shield 14 connecting the end members and 12 and maintaining them in spaced parallel relation, and a tape cup 15 mounted on the right hand end member 12. The lower front edge 14- (Fig. 2) of the shield or casing 14 forms a cutting edge for the paper in the dispenser.
The left hand end member 10, which may be molded from a plastic, comprises an outer wall 16, the front and rear sides of which have an inwardly extending flange 17 formed thereon while the rear edge has an inwardly extending projection 18 adjacent thereto, the flanges servin to secure the end member 10 to the shield 14 by riveting.
The inner side of the end member 10 is provided with an inwardly extending centrally located spindle 20 of proper size to receive the center tube carrying the roll of wrapping material (not shown).
The right hand end member 12 likewise has a wall, 22, with flanges l7 and 18' extending inwardly and corresponding to the flanges 17 and 18 of the member 10 to which the right hand end of the shield 14 is secured by rivets or other suitable means.
The central portion of the wall 22 has an aperture 24 alined with the spindle 20. The aperture 24 has an outwardly projecting bearing 25 formed thereabout.
The shield 14 may be made of a light gage sheet metal and forms the top, rear and front of the dispenser. The
Patented Dec. 10, 1957 shield extends under the flanges 17-17 and to the rear of the flanges 1818' and is secured to those flanges by any convenient means such as by riveting. The shield 14 is provided with apertures 26 through the rear wall of the shield by means of which the dispenser may be secured by screws or nails to any convenient surface.
The tape cup 15 is generally cylindrical in shape and of suflicient diameter to receive a roll of self-adhesive cellophane tape (not shown) of the types known commercially either as Scotch cellophane tape or as masking tape. The cup 15 is formed of a circular base 28, which carries a cylindrical skirt 30 on one side of the base. A hearing 31 is formed centrally on the base and projects inwardly toward the end wall 22 of the end member 12.
The bearing 31 has an outside diameter equal to the outside diameter of the outwardly projecting bearing 25, the bearings 31 and 25 abutting to form a support for the spool of cellophane tape.
A spindle 33, having an outside diameter equal to the diameter of the aperture 24, projects through the bearing 25 and supports the entire tape cup from the end member 12, and at the same time projects through the aperture 24 and forms a support for that end of the roll of wrapping material.
A spring key 35 performs the dual function of retaining the tape cup 15 on the bearing 25 and of preventing rotation of the tape cup.
As best seen in Figs. 3 and 4, the tape cup 15 has an opening 37 at the lower side thereof for the tape to pass through.
A serrated cutter blade 39 is mounted in the lower forward corner of the end member 12 to cut off the tape at desired lengths. Due to the slope of the cutter blade the piece of tape above the cut adheres to the blade so that it remains immediately available for use.
The cutter blade is secured to the end member 12 either by being cast therein during the molding or by riveting.
If it is found desirable a drag or brake (not shown) may be used to act on the roll of Wrapping material and prevent undue unrolling during the dispensing operation.
Operation To equip the dispenser with tape and wrapping material the tape cup 15 is first removed from the bearing 25 and a roll of self-adhesive tape, such as is commercially known as Scotch tape or the type known as masking tape, is inserted over the bearing 31 and the end of the tape drawn out through the opening 37.
The spindle 33 may then be inserted partially through the bearing 25. In this position one end of a roll of wrapping material (for example wax paper) is inserted over the spindle 2i) and the opposite end of the roll inserted into the dispenser with the end of the roll alined with the spindle 33. The spindle 33 may then be inserted completely into the bearing to support that end of the roll of wrapping material.
When the brim of the cup abuts the end member 12, the free end of the tape may be secured to the blade 39 and the dispenser is ready for use.
It will be realized that the hereinbefore described form of the invention is given merely as a preferred example thereof and that various changes in size, shape and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
That which is claimed as new and is desired to be secured by United States Letters Patent is:
