BICYCLE-LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,580, dated July 17, 1883.
Application filed May 21,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK H. TALBOT and FERNANDO BROWN, both of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bicycle-lanterns adapted to be suspended between the spokes and upon the revolving axle, and has for its object certain improvements in the method of attaching the front glass and the reflector to the body of the lantern, the device for hanging the lantern to the axle, the method of se curing the wick-wheel to prevent the wick jarring down and extinguishing the light, and in the means of securing the lamp from jarring and operating the door, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lantern embodying said improvements. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of same with door open, showing the lamp. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a vertical section. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the clamp, showing internal construction.
A is the body of the lantern, in the front side of which is placed a circular glass, B, held by a cap, O, fitted over a ring, B, attached to the said body A. The said ring and cap may be screw-threaded, as shown, or the cap may be made without screw-thread and be fastened with spring-catches.
D is a parabolic reflector having a flange resting over the edge of the said ring, and held between it and the cap, so that the reflector may be easily removed when the cap is removed.
Eis alamp setting in the lower part of the lantern, the reflector having an opening through which the burner projects.
In the back side of the lantern is placed a door, F, through which the lamp is inserted or removed.
To the top of the lantern-body is attached a hood, H, covering an opening, h, for a draft for the burner.
To the top of the lantern is attached a clamp, by means of a hinged or pivotal joint. Said clamp consists of a cylinder, G, having a longitudinal opening, 9, for placing it onto the axle of the bicycle. Said cylinder is joined to an arm or projection, a, on the lantern, at one side of said opening 9, in such a manner that the lantern may swing, for the purpose of maintaining a perpendicular position in case the v clamp should, by friction, be liable to turn in a tubular clamp, J, having a lug, j, through which is put a thumb-screw, 70, provided with a jam-nut, 7c. Said screw it is for pressing on the projecting arm of the lever I for the purpose of pressing the hook up against the axle X, and is for regulating the pressure to prevent rattling; but the pressure is not so great as to prevent the axle turning easily. In the heads of the cylinder are secured flexible bearings Z Z, of leather or suitable material, to prevent wearor noise. The tubular clamps consist in providing thumb-nuts n n on the split tapering screw-threaded ends of the tube J, in which pins or rods rr are placed. These rods are intended for bearers to keep the lantern midwaybetween the hub-disks. The ends of said rods are provided with flexible tips to prevent scratching or marring the disks.
To prevent the jarring down of the lampwick, the thumb-piece t, which operates the wick-wheels, projects through the wall of the lantern for the convenience of adjusting the wick without opening the lantern. A setscrew, S, is placed close to said thumb-piece,
which, when screwed down, bears upon said piece and prevents its turning, thereby obviating the liability of extinguishing the light by jarring.
To the rear side of the lamp is attached a spring, V, which bears against the door and serves to hold the lamp steady and prevent rattling, and it also serves to throw open the door when it is unlatched.
Having described our invention, we claim 1.
