A primary object of our invention is to provide a simple, strong, efiicient and readily manipulated lamp construction, suitable for use as a headlight, providing means for hermetically sealing and resiliently holding the interior parts, whereby corrosivegases are excluded-and fragile elements are cushioned.
Our improvements comprise, generally stated, a sealed case provided with a trans-v parent front door through which light rays as are reflected and a rear door for access to effect adjustments; an outer carrier telescoped in said case where it is held by resilient means against movement from its desired position; an inner carrier cradled in said outer carrier by resilient means; a refiector seated and-clamped in said inner carrier so that it is firmly held while readily detached; and means for holding a source of light within said reflector so that it is mm dered accessible and can be adjusted readily by opening the rear door of the case.
The characteristic features of our improvements are embodied in the lamp specifled in the following description and accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a broken front elevation of a lamp embodying our improvements, Fig. 2 is a broken sectional View taken on the line 2"2 of Fig. 1, Fig.
3 is a sectional view taken horizontally through the axis of the lamp, and Fig. 4 is a broken part sectional elevation taken on the line l4" of Fig. 8.
The lamp shown in the drawings comprises a case preferably having a cylindrical cast iron body 1 with the inwardly curved rear portion 1, in combination with the front door frame 2 and the rear door 3; the body of the case being provided with knuckles 4 connected by the cotter pins or pintles onto the knuckles 6 on the door frame 2, with knuckles 7 connected by the pin 8 to an eye-bolt 9 engaged between the bifurcations 10 of the door by the thumb nut 9', with the knuckles 11 connected by the cotter pins or pintles 12 to the knuckles 13 on the door 3 and with the knuckles 14 connected by the pin 15 with an eye-bolt l6 engaged by the nut 16' between the bifurcations 17 on the door 3. A rubber ring or gasket 18, placed in the channel 19 of the door frame 2, engages a circular flange 20 on the body 1 to provide a hermetically sealed joint between said'body and the front door, and a rubber ring or gasket 21, disposed in the channel 22 in the rear part of the body,
.engages a circular flange 23 ofthe door 3 to provide a hermetically sealed joint between the same and said body; the thumb nuts 9' and 16 being turned in upon their respective bolts 9 and 16 to compel the necessary pressure on the respective rings 18 and 21 for sealing the joints. A circular channel 24 in the flange 25 of the door frame 2 holds a rubber ring or gasket 26, against which the glass 27 is pressed firmly by clips 28 which are fixed to the frame by the screws 29 'andadapted to turn thereon.
A carrier 30, preferably a sheet metal cylinder, having the reinforcing interior end rings 30, is telescoped within the body 1. against the lugs 31 which are fixed in the rear thereof, where said carrier is held by a leaf spring 32, fixed thereto and engaged in a channel 33 of the case, and by U springs 34 held by the screws 29 and have free ends pressed against the outer end of the carrier 30 when the door 2 is held in closed position.
Radial bolts 35 have their outer ends fixed to the outer carrier 30 near the rear end thereof and their inner ends engaged to the outer ends of the respective coiled springs 38 by means of the collar 85 adjustable on the inner ends of the bolts. The inner ends of the springs 38 are fixed to respective angle irons or brackets 39 which are secured to the inwardly projecting part 37 of the inner carrier 37. The inner carrier 37 has the flared or conical outer part 37 covered by a layer of felt or other pliable material 37". Leaf springs 36 have the inwardl deflected rear ends 86 fixed to the parts i and the inwardly deflected forward ends 36" provided with the inwardly projecting lips 36', having the felt or other pliable covering 39.
A reflector 40, suitably silve'red glass, conforms with and is supported in the flaring seat of the inner carrier 37 and has its outer edge engaged by the outer ends of the springs 36 which conform therewith.
A metal shell 41, provided with the resilient fingers 41 and the bearing -11, is set in the apex of the paraboloidal reflector 40 and holds the socket 42 of the incandescent lamp 43, the socket being frictionally held by the fingers 41'. A bolt 44, connected to the socket 42 by the pin at, is movable through the bearing 41 by the nut 44-" swiveled therein, whereby the socket 4:2 is moved longitudipally in the shelletl and the lamp 43 adjusted and focused with reference tothe reflector 40, when the door 3 is open.
Conductors 45 and #15 are connected, through. the respective binding screws 46 and l6 carried by the socket 4-2, in circuit with the lamp filament, and pass out of the case 1 through the openingl in the back thereof.
The reflector 40 and the lamp 43 are, by
the mechanism described, protected by and cradled in the case, readily inserted and removed therefrom, supported firmly while cushioned, and readily accessible for adjust ment or repair.
Having describedour invention, we claim:
1. The combination with a case, of an outer carrier telescoped therein so as to be directly held thereby, a reflector, aninner carrier for supporting said reflector, and mechanism comprising resilient means whereby said'outcr carrier supports said inner carrier.
2. Thecombination with a case, of an.
outer carrier telescopcd therein, means for holding said carrier relatively to said case, an inner carrier having a seat for a reflector, cra( lling mcans whereby said outer carrier supports said inner carrier, and means for engaging said reflector and holding it'in' instance by said reflector and accessible through a door of said case, and lamp adjusting means accessible through the other door of said case.

The combinationwith a hermetically sealed case having a front door provided with a light transmitting element and a rear door opposite thereto, of a carrier telescoped in and frictionally engaged to said case, said carrier having open ends, a second carrier having open ends, means for resiliently supporting said second carrier in said. carrier first named, a reflector supported by said carrier second named, latching means for holding said reflector in said carrier second named, a shell supported by said reflector, a lamp socket movable longitudinally in said shell, and means accessible through the opening of said rear door for adjusting said socket.
5. The combination with a case having a door provided with pliable means, of a carrier held in position in said case through the engagement of an end thereof by said means, a second carrier having bearings, boits supported by said carrier first named and engaging said bearings, resilient coils engaging said bearings and adapted for supporting said second carrier, a reflector supported by said carrier second named, and a source of light carried by said reflector.
6. The combination with a case, of a carrier tclcscopcd in said case, pliable'means comprising a leaf spring .for frictionally holding said carrier relatively to said case, a second carrier having a conical seat at its forward end, a reflector disposed in said second carrier in engagement with said seat, resilient latches fixed to said second carrier and engaging said reflector to hold it in said seat, bolts fixed to said carrier first named and having said second carrier connected in movable relation thereto, and coiled springs for supporting said second carrier resiliently.
7. The combination with a case having front and rear doors andnieans for hermetically sealing them, said case having inwardly projecting means and said front door having U-springs thereon, of a carrier engaged in said case between said projecting means and said springs, a second carrier having open ends and provided with a flared seat, means whereby said second carrier is resiliently supported by said carrier first named, resilient latches fixed to said second carrier, a reflector engaged in said seat by said. latches, a socket holder carried ''by said reflector, a lamp socket in said holder, and means accessible through said rear door for adjusting said socket in said holder.
8. The combination with a case having a door frame hinged thereto, a gasket carried by said frame, a transparent element engaging said gasket, and clamps for holding said in testimony whereof we have hereunto element against said gasket, of a carrier set our names this 31st day of.
