(Cl. 70146) This invention relates generally to a door lock and more particularly to a cylindrical door lock which commonly includes an operating unit, that is positioned in a hole extending through the face of a door stile, and a separate latch unit which is positioned in a hole in the edge of said stile and is secured to said operating unit for operation thereby.
It is customarily required thatV the mechanism of door locks for the exterior doors of stores or the like operate in a manner to permit simultaneous dogging of both the inner and the outer door knobs by key-operated means contained in each of the said knobs. That is, when the door lock is locked from the outside of the door, both the outer knob and the inner knob will be simultaneously dogged against operation. When said door lock is locked from the innerY side of the door, each of said knobs will also be simultaneously dogged against operation. v
An object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a cylindrical door latch operating unit having a novel mechanism therein by which both the Vinner and thel outer door knobs may be simultaneously dogged against operation through key-operated means in either of said knobs to thereby render said unit particularly useful` for the exterior of stores or the like.
Another object of this invention is the provision of such a unit which is economical to produce and of a very durable construction to provide long and-dependable service.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and the accompanying drawing in which:

The door latch operating unit illustrated in the accompanying drawings includes a cylindrical casing 5 in the form of a cup-shaped member having a cover 6 which is secured thereto by means of screws 7--7. A tubular outer sleeve 8 extends from the bottom wall of said casing and has an annular portion 9 which projects through the said wall and into the interior of the casing. The cover 6 carries asimilar inner sleeve 10; the annular portion 11 of which is provided with diametrically opposed notches 12-12.
The casing 5 of said unit contains a sub-frame 13 which is fully disclosed in the co-pending application of Ernest L. Teich et al., Serial No. 211,940, tiled February 20, 1951, and now Patent No. 2,721,095, dated October 18, 1955. Said subframe is -retained in the casing by the cover 6 and carries guide members 14-14 which are secured to said frame by pins 14-a-14-a and slidably support a retractor generally indicated at 15. Said retractor, as fully described in said Patent No. 2,721,095, includes a U-shaped member 16 having side plates 17-17 secured to the opposite edges thereof; said plates extending beyond the upper and lower sides of said member 16 and straddling the guide members 14-14 to slidably retain the retractor thereon as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. Each of the side plates 17--17 of the retractor is provided with a pair of inwardly extending lugs 18-18 which are engaged by one end of a spring 19 that urges the retractor into its normal extended position as illustrated in Fig. 4. The said side plates 17-17 are also provided with outwardly extending ears 20-20 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The tubular sleeves 8 and 10 rotatably support outer and inner tubular knob Shanks 21 and 22, respectively, which are retained within the said sleeves by retaining members 23 and 24 as fully described in the co-pending application of Ernest L. Teich et al., Serial No. 211,939, led February 20, 1951, and now Patent No. 2,701,160, dated February 1, 1955. Each of the shanks 21 and 22 carries an operating knob, 25 and 26, respectively, which is non-rotatably secured to its shank in the manner fully described in the co-pending application of Nicholas A. Welch et al., Serial No. 208,743, filed January 31, 1951, and now Patent No. 2,675,692, dated April 20, 1954.
The sleeves 8 and 10 have enlarged bores at their inner ends in which annular connectors 27 and 28, respectively, are rotatably mounted. Said connectors are detachably and non-rotatably secured to their respective tubular knob shanks 21 and 22 by tongue and slot connections, as illustrated at 24a-24a. The wall of each of said connectors 27 and 28 contains diametrically opposed notches 29--29 which receive the straight portions of rollback members 30 and 31vthat operate the retractor 13`through engagement thereof with the adjacent ears 20`20 on the retractor, as fully described in the co-pending application of Ernest L. Teich, Serial No. 299,828, tiled July 19, 1952, and now Patent No. 2,723,150, dated November 8, 1955. The straight portions of the inner rollback 31 are normally aligned with the notches 12-12, and said rollback is axially slidable with respect to its connector 28 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The operating unit above described is positioned on the stile of a door, -with the cylindrical casing disposed in the opening in said stile, -by suitable clamping plates which are threaded onto the threaded portions of the sleeves 8 and 10 as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. A suitable latch unit, not shown, is positioned in the opening extending into the edge of the stile and `said latch unit is attached to the cylindrical casing in a known manner. The latch bolt of said unit is operatively connected t-o the lingers a15a on the retractor 15 and it will be understood from the above description that rotation of either the outer knob or the inner knob 26 will, through rotation of its respective connector, rotate the rollback carried thereby to retract the retractor and withdraw the latch bolt secured thereto.
This invention provides means in the operating unit above described for simultaneously dogging the outer and the inner knob shanks against operation by key-actuated means contained in the outer and in the inner knobs.
Y Said mechanism includes a pair of conventional keyoperated cylinder locks 32 and 33 which are secured, respectively, in the outer and inner knobs 25 and 26 in the manner fully described in the co-pending application of Nicholas A. Welch et al., Serial No. 208,743, lcd January 31, 1951, and now Patent No. 2,675,692, dated April 20, 1954. The cylinder lock 32 in the outer knob 25 has a key plug 34 therein which projects through an opening in the wall of the knob and is thereby rendered accessible to receive a key for the operation thereof. The inner end of the plug 34 is operatively connected to a dogging mechanism for the outer knob shank such as that described in the patent of Nicholas A. Welch No. 2,630,697, issued March 10, 1953.
Said dogging mechanism includes a shaft 35 which projects into a hole in the inner end of the key plug 34 and is secured thereto by a pin 36. The shaft 35 is rotatably received in an axial hole in a cylindrical cam member 37 which is rotatably mounted in the outer knob shank 21 and has a slot 38 therein which receives a pin 39 that extends radially from the shaft 35 to provide a lost motion connection between 4said cam member and the key plug 34 permitting independent rotation thereof for ninety degrees as illustrated in Fig. 9. In order to provide for tolerance buildups during manufacture, the width of said slot 38 is greater than the diameter of the pin 39 to permit a limited amount of outward axial movement of said cam member relatively to the shaft 35 against the force of an anti-rattle spring 42 which is disposed between the end of the shaft vand the bottom of the hole in the cam member. The said cam member has a pin 40 projecting radially therefrom into a segmental notch 41 in the outer knob shank 21 to thereby provide a lost motion connection permitting 90 degrees of independent rotation therebetween.
Said cylindrical cam member 37 operates a pair of locking balls 43-43 which are disposed in radial openings 44-44 in the Wall of the outer knob shank 21 and are movable into recesses 45--45 in the wall of the outer sleeve 8 by cam surfaces 46-46 on said cam member when it is rotated by said key plug to thereby lock the outer knob shank 21 to the outer sleeve 8 to prevent rotation of said shank and of the outer knob 25.
For the purposes of this invention, said cylindrical cam member is provided with a diametrical slot 47 in its inner end which receives a pair of lugs 48--48 projecting from the outer end of a plug cam 49 that is rotatably mounted in the knob shank 21. Said plug cam 49 contains Va slot 5 0 which, ,in etfect, extends therearound for slightly more than degrees and is also provided at its inner end with a V-shaped notch 51 which receives the V-shaped end portion 52 of a head 53 on a spindle 56 that is axially slidable in said outer knob shank 21; said spindle being retained against rotation by a pin 54 which extends from its head into a longitudinal slot 55 in the wall of`the knob shank 21. A similar slot 55-a is provided at the opposite side of the shank to permit a change in the hand of the unit. Said spindle 56 extends through the outer connector 27, an -opening in the outer rollback 30, elongated openings in the sides 17-17 of the retractor and through an opening in the inner rollback 31; said inner rollback, however, being secured against axial movement relatively to the spindle 56 by snap rings 57-57 which are fastened thereto at the opposite sides of said rollback. The inner rollback and the spindle are relatively rotatable to permit normal operation of the retractor when either )of the door knobs 25 or 26 isjoperated.
The plug cam 49 and the spindle 56 have co-axial openings therethrough which receive a rotatable drive shaft 58 having a pin 59 which extends radially therefrom into the slot 50 in the plug cam 49. The opposite end of said drive shaft 58 extends from the spindle 56 through the inner connector 28 and into the bore of the inner knob shank 22 wherein it is supported by a collar 60 which also provides a support for one end of a compression spring 61 whose opposite end extends around the inner end of the spindle 56 into engagement with the adjacent snap ring 57 thereon. Said spring urges the V-shaped end 53 of the spindle into the notch 51 in the end of the plug cam 49 and also retains the plug cam in engagement with the cylindrical cam 37. The drive shaft also carries a pin 62 which extends transversely therethrough outwardly of the collar 60. It will thus be seen that the drive shaft is free to rotate relatively to the spindle and the plug cam, but cannot move axially. The spindle is, however, free to move axially relatively to said drive shaft.
A driver member 63 is secured to the end of the key plug 64 in the cylinder lock 33 in the inner knob 26 by a pin 65 and said driver member is rotatably positioned in the inner knob shank land is provided with diametrically opposed fingers 66-66 whose ends are abutted by the collar'60 to provide an axially immovable support for the spring 61.
When the latch operating unit is in normal unlocked condition wherein rotation of either the inner or the outer knob will retract the retractor, the parts of the dogging mechanism above described are in the positions illustrated in Figs. 1 through 9. The pin 39 on the shaft 35 extending from the key plug 34 of the cylinder lock 32 in the outer knob lies against the lower end of the slot 38 in the cylindrical cam member 37, as illustrated particularly in Figs. 2 and 9, and the pin 40 extending from said cam member is positioned against the upper side of the notch 41 in the end of the outer knob shank 21. The locking balls 43-43 are disposed within the openings 44-44 in said knob shank and rest on the cam surfaces 46-46. The tapered end of the spindle 56 is disposed in the tapered notch 51 of the plug cam 49 which locates the inner rollback 31 in normal operative position, as illustrated particularly in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and the pin 59 on the end'of the drive shaft 58 is disposed intermediate the sides of the slot 50 in said plug cam while the pin 62 on the opposite end of said drive shaft is disposed intermediate the fingers 66-66 extending from the driver 63.
When the outer knob 25 is rotated, it will rotate the youter shank 21and, through the connector 27, the outer rollback 30 which, through engagement thereof with the ears 20- 28 on the retractor, will withdraw said retractor to retract the latch bolt connected thereto. It will be noted that the cylinder lock 3 2, all of the parts of the dogging mechanism, except those non-rotatably attached to the inner shank, will rotate with said outer shank.
' 5 Since i t takes approximately sixty degrees of rotation of the outer knob in either direction to fully withdraw the retractor, no interference will occur between the pin 62 and the fingers 66-66 on the drive member 63 as sixty degrees free motion is possible therebetween in either direction as evidenced by Fig. 6 of the drawings.
It will vbe understood that rotation of the inner knob will rotate the inner rollback 31 relatively to the spindle 56 to cause retraction of the retractor in the same manner as, but independently of, the outer rollback.
Assuming that it'is desired to lock the door from the outer side thereof, the operation of my improved dogging mechanism is as follows: The required key, indicated at 67, is inserted into the key plug 34 and said plug is rotated in a clockwise direction. This will rotate the shaft 35 and, through the pin 39 thereon, will cause immediate rotation of the cylindrical cam member 37 in a clockwise direction. Rotation of said cam member will cause rotation of the plug cam 49 relatively to the non-rotatable spindle 56. The tapered sides of the notch 51 in said plug cam will force the spindle inwardly against the force of the spring 61 to thereby move the inner rollback relatively to the inner connector 28 and cause the straight portions of said rollback to enter the notches 12--12 in the portion 11 of the inner sleeve 10. As the cam member 37 is being rotated, the cam surfaces 46-46 thereon will move the balls 43-43 into the recesses 45--45 in the wall of the outer sleeve to thereby prevent rotation of the outer sleeve relatively to the said outer sleeve. Rotation of the key 67 is arrested by engagement of the pin 40 with the lower side of the notch 41 in the end of the now dogged outer shank and, after the ninety degrees rotation permitted by said notch, the parts of the dogging mechanism are in the position illustrated in Figs. l() and 11 through 14. In order to facilitate this description, it will be assumed that the drive shaft 58 has not rotated during movement of the parts into dogging position.
No change has therefore loccurred in the lrelative positions of the pin 62 and the lingers 66-66 on the driver 63, as evidenced by Fig. 1l. The plug cam 49 has rotated ninety degrees and is in the position illustrated in Fig. 12. The locking balls 43-43 are disposed in the recesses 45-45 to prevent operation of the outer knob shank, and the inner rollback is disposed in the notches 12-12 to prevent operation of the inner knob shank. The pin 40 on the cam member 37 is disposed against the lower end of the notch 41, and the pin 39 is still in engagement with the side of the slot 38 in said cam member. Rota tion of the key for ninety degrees in a counter-clockwise direction will return the key plug to its normal position wherein the key may be withdrawn therefrom without affecting the remainder of the mechanism since the pin 39 is free to travel ninety degrees in a counter-clockwise direction from the position illustrated in Fig. 14.
In order to undog the outer knob and the inner knob by the key-operated means in the outer knob, the key 67 is inserted into the key plug and rotated in a counterclockwise direction. This will cause rotation of the cam member 37 and the plug cam 49 in a counter-clockwise direction to permit return of the locking balls to normal position and movement of the spindle 56 by the spring 61 to carry the inner rollback out of the notches 12-12. When Vthe cam member 37 has returned to its normal position as illustrated in Fig. 9, further movement thereof relatively to the outer knob shank is prevented by engagement of the pin 40 with the end of the notch 41 in said shank. It will be understood, however, that continued rotation of the key in a counter-clockwise direction will cause rotation of said outer knob shank and withdrawal of the retractor. Free movement of the key plug back to its normal position is then permitted by the lost motion connection provided by the pin 39 and the slot 38.
If it is desired to unlock the unit from the inner side of the door after the dogging mechanism has been moved to dogging position by the key-operated means in the outer door knob, the required key 68 is inserted into the key plug 64 of the cylindrical lock 33 in the inner knob and said key plug is rotated by the key in a clockwise direction as viewed from the inner side of the door. This will cause free rotation of the driver 63 and of the fingers 66-66 thereon for a distance of sixty degrees from the position illustrated in Fig. l1 until the said fingers engage the pin 62 on the end of the drive shaft 58. Further rotation of said key plug will rotate said drive shaft and, through the engagement of the pin 59 thereon with the side of the slot S0 in Vthe plug cam 49, will rotate said cam from its locked position, illustrated in Fig. l2, to its normal position illustrated in Fig. 7. Rotation of said plug cam by the drive shaft 58 will also rotate the cam member 37 to return the balls 43-43 to their normal positions. Rotation of said cam member 37 independently of the key plug 34 is permitted by the lost motion connection provided by the pin 39 and the slot 38. It will be understood that rotation of said plug cam b`y the drive shaft 58 to its normal position will also permit movement of the spindle 56 and the inner rollback 31 to normal position. The key plug 64 may then be returned to its normal position and the key withdrawn.
When the parts of the operating unit are in their normal unlocked positions, as illustrated in Figs. 1 through 9, and it is desired to lock the unit by the key-operated means in the inner knob, the operation of the dogging mechanism is as follows:
The required key 68 is inserted into the key plug 64 of the cylinder lock 33 in the inner door knob and said key plug is rotated in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed from the inner side of the door. This will rotate the fingers 66-66 on the driver 63 for a distance of sixty degrees whereupon they will engage the pin 62 on the drive shaft 58. Continued rotation of the key plug plug 64 will cause rotation of the drive shaft 58 relatively to the spindle 56 and to the plug cam 49 for ninety degrees from the position illustrated in Fig. 7 whereupon the pin 59 on said drive shaft will engage the side of the slot 50 in said plug cam and cause rotation of said cam which, through the engagement of the lugs 48-48 thereon with the cam member 37, will rotate said cam member to cause movement of the locking balls 43-43 into the recesses 45-45 in the outer sleeve 8 to thereby dog the outer shank against rotation. Rotation of said plug cam 49 will also move the spindle into dogging position wherein the straight portions of the inner rollback 31 will be positioned in the notches 12-12 to thereby dog the inner shank against operation. When the dogging mechanism has been moved to dogging position, the parts thereof are in the positions illustrated in Figs. l5 through 19.
It will be understood that the cam member 37 will rotate independently of the shaft 35 and of the outer key plug 34 and that the inner key has been rotated for a distance of two hundred and forty degrees, that is, sixty degrees from its normal position until the fingers 66-66 engage the pin 62, then ninety degrees to bring the pin 59 into engagement with the end of the slot 50 in the plug cam 49, then an additional ninety degrees to rotate said plug cam and the cam member 37 into dogging position. It will be noted that further rotation of the key 68 is arrested through the engagement of the pin 40 on the cam member 37 with the side of the notch 41 in the outer shank 21.
The key may then be rotated in a reverse, or clockwise, direction for a distance of two hundred and forty degrees to return the key plug to its normal position whereupon the key may be withdrawn therefrom. Rotation in this manner is permitted since the fingers 66--66 must move for one hundred and twenty degrees in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 16, until they again engage the pin 62. Since the pin 59 on the end of the drive shaft 58 is located in the position illustrated in Fig. 17, itwill be understood that the said drive shaft may be rotated the additional one hundred and twenty Vdegrees necessary to return the key plug 64 to its normal positionwithout interfering with the position of the plug cam 49. To unlock the unit by the key-operated means in the inner knob after it has been locked as above described, it is only necessary to insert the key into the key plug 64 and to rotate said key plug in a clockwise direction. This will immediately cause rotation of the drive shaft 58 which will carry the pin 59 thereon the remaining sixty degrees of -the slot 50 and then return the plug cam 49 and the cam member 37 to their normal positions to undog both the outer and the inner knob shank.
The lock may be unlocked from the outer side of the door after having been locked from the inner side by merely inserting the key into the key plug 34 and rotating said key plug in a counter-clockvvise direction for ninety degrees from the position illustrated in Fig. 15. This will cause rotation of the cam member and the plug cam to their normal positions and undogging of the outer and the inner knob Shanks.
I claim:

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing and mechanism including inner and outer tubular operating members for operating said retractor; a rst dogging means in said outer operating member for dogging said member against operation, a second dogging means for dogging said inner operating member against operation, cam means in said outer operating member operable by said first dogging means to cause movement of said second dogging means into dogging position simultaneously with the movement of the first dogging means into dogging position, key operated means carried by said outer operating member for moving said first dogging means into dogging position to cause operation of said cam means and movement of said second dogging means into dogging position; said key operated means being adapted to return said irst dogging means to undogging position and operate said cam means to permit movement of said second dogging means into undogging position, spring means for returning said second dogging means to undogging position, and key operated means carried by said inner operating member and operatively connected to said cam means.
2. In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing and mechanism including an inner and an outer tubular operating member for operating said retractor; a first dogging means in said outer operating member for dogging said outer member against operation, a second dogging means for dogging said inner operating member against operation, cam means operable by said rst dogging means to move said second dogging means into dogging position simultaneously with the movement of the first dogging means into dogging position, key operated means carried by said outer operating member for moving said rst dogging means into dogging position to cause operation of said cam means and movement of said second dogging means to dogging position; said key operated means being adapted to return said rst dogging means to undogging position, spring means for returning said second dogging means to undogging position, a drive shaft operatively connected to said cam means and extending into said inner operating member, and key operated means carried by said inner operating member for rotating said drive shaft to cause simultaneous operation of said Iirst and said second dogging means, whereby the inner and the outer operating members may be simultaneously dogged and undogged from both the inner and the outer sides of the unit. In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing having an opening extending therethrough, an inner and an outer tubular knob shank mounted to rotate in said casing, and a rollback nonrotatably connected to each of said shanks for actuating said retractor, the inner rollback being movable into en gagement with abutments in the casing to prevent rotation of said inner knob shank; dogging means in said outer knob shank for dogging said shank against operation, a cam member rotatably mounted in said outer shank and operable by said dogging means, a spindle member slidably mounted in said outer shank and having a portion extending through the opening in said retractor and rotatably connected to said inner rollback; said spindle member being axially movable in said outer shank by said cam member, key operated means carried by said outer knob shank for moving said dogging means into dogging position to thereby rotate said cam member and cause axial movement of said spindle member in said outer shank to carry said inner rollback into engagement with said abutments, whereby both the outer and the inner knob shanks are simultaneously dogged against operation; said key operated means being adapted to return said dogging means and said cam means to undogging position, spring means for returning said spindle member and said inner rollback to undogging position, separate key operated means carried by said inner knob shank, and a drive shaft operatively connected to said cam member and rotatable by said separate key operated means to rotate said ca m and simultaneously move said dogging means and said inner rollback into dogging position.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing having an opening therethrough, an inner and an outer tubular knob shank mounted to rotate in said casing, and a rollback non-rotatably connected to each of said shanks for `actuating said retractor, the inner rollback being movable into engagement with abutments in the casing to prevent rotation of said inner knob shank; dogging means in said outer knob shank for dogging said shank against operation, key operated means carried by said outer knob shank for actuating said dogging means and having a lost motion connection therewith permitting limited relative movement therebetween, a cam memberV secured to said dogging means and rotatably mounted in said outer shank, a spindle member slidably mounted in said outer shank and adapted to be moved axially by said cam member; said spindle member having a portion extending through an opening in the outer rollback, the opening through said retractor and an opening in said inner rollback and rotatably connected to said inner rollback, means preventing axial movement of said inner rollback on said portion, a drive shaft extending from said cam member through said spindle member and into the inner knob shank; said drive shaft being rotatable relatively to said cam member and said spindle member and having a lost motion connection With said cam member permitting limited relative movement therebetween, separate key operated means carried by said inner knob shank adapted to rotate said drive shaft through a lost motion connection permitting relative rotation therebetween for a limited distance, and spring means engaging said spindle member and urging it into undogging position.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor movable in said casing, and mechanism including inner and outer independently operable operating members for actuating said retractor; a tirst dogging means adapted to dog the outer operating member against operation, a second dogging means adapted to dog the inner operating member against operation, and means operable from both the inner andthe outer sides of said unit for causing simultaneous movement of said rst and second dogging means into and out of dogging position.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor movable in said casing, and mechanism including inner and outer independently operable operating members for actuating said retractor; a rst dogging means adapted to dog one of said operating members against operation, a second and separate dogging means adapted to dog the other of said operating members against operation, manually operated means for moving Said first dogging means into and out of dogging position, and means operatively connecting said first and second dogging means, said means being responsive to the movement of said first dogging means and adapted to shift said second dogging means into and out of dogging position simultaneously with the movement of said first dogging means into and out of dogging position.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor movable in said casing and mechanism including inner and outer independently operable operating members for actuating said retractor; a rst dogging means adapted to dog the outer operating member against operation, a second dogging means adapted to dog the inner operating member against operation, key operated means associated with each of said operating members, and means responsive to the operation of either of said key operated means for simultaneously moving said first and second dogging means either into or out of dogging position.

In a door latch operating unit including a` casing, a retractor in said casing and mechanism including inner and outer independently operable operating members for actuating said retractor; a rst dogging means for dogging the outer operating member against operation, a second dogging means for dogging the inner operating member against operation, said second dogging means being responsive to the operation of said first dogging means and movable into and out of dogging position simultaneously therewith, key operated means associated with the outer operating member for controlling said first dogging means, separate key operated means associated with theinner operating member, and means operatively connecting said separate key operated means to said first dogging means whereby the condition of both of said operating members may be controlled from both the inner and the outer sides of the operating unit.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing, and mechanism including inner and outer independently operable operating members for actuating said retractor; a rst dogging means for dogging said outer operating member against operation, a second dogging means for dogging the inner operating member against operation, means operatively connecting said first and second dogging means for simultaneous movement into and out of dogging position and including cam means responsive to the operation of said rst dogging means and controlling the position of said second dogging means,
key operated means associated with said outer operating member for actuating said irst dogging means, separate key operated means associated with the inner operating member, and means operatively connecting said separate key operated means to said rst dogging means.
l0. ln a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing, and mechanism including inner and outer independently rotatable tubular knob shanks for actuating said retractor; a rst dogging means in said outer knob shank for dogging said shank against operation, a second dogging means for dogging said inner knob shank against operation, cam means in said outer knob shank operable by said first dogging means to cause movement of said second dogging means into dogging position simultaneously With the movement of said rst dogging means into dogging position, spring means tending to shift said second dogging means into undogging post ion, key operated means carried by said outer knob shank for moving said first dogging means into dogging position to cause operation of said cam means and movement of said second dogging means into dogging position, said key operated means being adapted to return said first dogging means and said cam means to undogging position to allow movement of said second dogging means into undogging position by said spring means.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing, an inner and an outer tubular knob shank mounted to rotate in said casing, and a rollback nonrotatably connected to each of said shanks for actuating said retractor, the inner rollback being movable into engagement with abutments on said casing to dog the inner knob shank against rotation; separate dogging means in said outer knob shank for dogging said shank against rotation, manually operated means carried by each of said Shanks for moving said separate dogging means into and out of dogging position, and means responsive to the movement of said separate dogging means adapted to cause movement of said inner rollback into and out of dogging position simultaneously therewith.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing, an inner and an outer tubular knob shank mounted to rotate in said casing, and a rollback nonrotatably connected to each of said Shanks for actuating said retractor, the inner rollback being movable into engagement with abutments on said casing to dog the inner knob shank against rotation; separate dogging means in said outer knob shank for dogging said shank against rotation, a spindle member arranged to slide axially of said knob shanks, means securing said inner rollback against axial movement with respect to said spindle member, key operated means carried by said outer knob shank for moving said separate dogging means into and out of dogging position, means responsive to the movement of said separate dogging means into dogging position for moving said spindle member to simultaneously shift said inner rollback into engagement with said abutments, means for returning said spindle member and said inner rollback to undogging position upon the return of said separate dogging means to undogging position, separate key operated means carried by said inner knob shank, and means operatively connecting said separate key operated means with said rst dogging means to permit simultaneous dogging and undogging of the inner and outer knob shanks from both the inner and the outer sides of the unit.

In a door latch operating unit including a casing, a retractor in said casing having an opening therethrough, an inner and an outer tubular knob shank mounted to rotate in said casing, and a rollback non-rotatably connected to each of said shanks for actuating said retractor, the inner rollback being movable into engagement with abutments in said casingvto dog the inner knob shank against rotation; a cam member rotatably mounted in said outer knob shank, dogging means operable by said cam member for dogging said outer knob shank, against operation, key operated means carried by said outer knob shank for rotating said cam member to move said dogging means into and out of dogging position, a plug cam mounted to rotate in said outer knob shank and nonrotatably connected to said cam member, a spindle mounted for axial sliding movement in said outer knob shank and having a cam portion cooperating with said plug cam adapted to cause axial movement of said spindle upon rotation of said plug cam, said spindle extending through an opening in the outer rollback, the opening in said retractor and an opening in said inner rollback, means preventing axial movement of said inner rollback relatively to said spindle, a drive shaft operatively connected to said plug cam and extending through an opening in said spindle into said inner knob shank, separate key operated means carried by said inner knob shank adapted to rotate said drive shaft, and spring means in said inner knob shank biasing said spindle into engagement with said plug cam and towards undogging position.
