UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ALEXANDER THOM'PSON, OF MONTIGELLO, NEWV YORK.
BAGGAGE-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 281,163, dated July 10, 1883.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN ALEXANDER THOMPSON, of Monticello, in the county of Sullivan and State of Newv York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Double Baggage Checks and Tags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this 1 specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one side of the same unfolded. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the outer side of the same unfolded. Fig. 4 is a persective view of a modified form of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan view of another modified form of the same unfolded.
The object of this invention is to provide baggage checks and tags constructed in such a manner that the same check or tag can be used in both directions between two places.
The check is made in two parts, A B, which are hinged together at one edge, and have slots 0 formed through them, near the opposite edge, to receive the strap D, by means of which they are attached to the baggage or other package in the ordinary manner. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the parts A B are represented as being hinged to each other by a ring, E, and in Fig. 5 they are represented as being connected by a double hinge, F. In Fig. at the parts A B are represented as having their opposite edges bent over in opposite directions, and having the slots 0 formed through them near one of the said bent-over edges, so that the two parts can be connected and disconnected by sliding them longitudinally upon each other. with either construction the two parts A B, when adjusted, will be held in place by the strap D.
Upon one side of one of the parts, as A, is stamped or otherwise formed the name of one of the places between which the check or tag is to be used, and the number of the check,
and upon one side of the other part, as B, is formed the name of the other place and the number of the check, so that when the two parts are folded together in one direction one of the inscriptions will be exposed, and when the said parts are folded together in the other direction the other inscription will be exposed; or the two inscriptions can be formed upon the opposite sides of the same part and both sides of the other part left blank, so that one inscription will be exposed when the two parts are folded together in one direction, and
the other exposed when the said parts are folded together in the other direction.
The check or tag can be made circular, as
shown in. Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or rectangular,
with rounded corners, as shown in Fig. 5, or of any other desired or convenient form.
The part of the check given to the passenger, and which is not shown in the drawings, is exactly like one of the parts A B, with the inscriptions upon its opposite sides. With this construction, when the check reaches its destination and is detached from the baggage or package, the strap D is taken off, the parts A B are reversed, and the said parts are again secured by the strap, and the check is ready to be used on a return-trip.
I am aware that two plates clamped upon a card and open to show the inscription thereon have been used; but this card is liable to be lost, or defaced by the weather or other cause.
hat I claim as new and of my invention 1s Abaggage-check consisting of two plates, A B, hinged together at E, provided with corresponding holes, 0 G, and marked on opposite sides with the names of different stations, whereby on reversing the check different names of stations will appear on the outside, as described.
JOHN ALEX. THOMPSON.
