Description

i it
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo WALTER STEVART, OF-NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 28, l l0, dated May 1,A 1860.
To @ZZ wwnt t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER STEWART, of Natchez, in the county of Adams and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and improved cotton tie or mode of fastening iron hoops upon cotton-bales or compressed bales of other materials, of which the following is a specification.
The accompanying drawing will serve to eX- plain the nature of the invention claimed.
At the endA of the hoop is a slanting notch, rounded and wider at the bottom than at the top or opening. The edges of this notch being bent or turned aside slightly, the link is permitted to drop into its place. The edges, being again straightened, serve to tix and retain the link in its place. At the end B, along the side ofthe hoop opposite to the link-notch, are cut serrations or notches situated at such intervals as will answer to the pressing and conipressing of cotton-bales, and fashioned similarly to those represented in the accompanying drawing.
Should it be necessary, two or more links may be used and fastened or xed on the hoop at end A, at intervals corresponding to the notches on the opposite side of the hoop at end B.
The hoops and links are to be made of material and in size sufliciently strong to answer the purpose for which they are to be used.
In using this tie, end B is to be passed through the link and underneath end A to such an extent as may be required by the compression made. 4
Vthat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Thetie or mode of fastening iron hoops on bales (of cotton or other compressed material) by means of a link or links, and serrated or notched edges ofthe hoop, as represented in the accompanying drawing.
NV. STEWART.
