12 Claims. (Cl. 20-11) The invention relates to windows formed by the assembly of a plurality of window panels, sections or units to provide a sectional window.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a window unit structure which permits a high degree of flexibility in the formation of a sectional window. The window unit structure of my invention permits the formation of stationary, awning or hopper units, or any combination of such units, and further permits the selective assembly of any such units or combination thereof into either a straight or bowed window.
Other objects, advantages and results of the invention will be brought out by the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a Window section; and
Pig. 7 is a perspective view of a spline or filler strip suitable for connecting adjoining sections.
Generally, the invention resides in providing a window section or unit adapted for assembly with similar units to provide a sectional window having a plurality of lights, the units being constructed so that, without modification, the same units may be used to assemble a sectional window of either the straight line type or the bowed type. This is accomplished by providing a pair of spaced interlockable means in each side stile and so shaping the outer face of the stile that the stiles of a pair of units may be brought into abutting relationship and connected to each other by either one or the other interlockable means to selectively furnish either a straight line type window or a bowed type window.
As illustrated, each window panel, section or unit A comprises top and bottom rails it it? connected in any suitable manner to the spaced side stiles 12, 12. The rails and stiles may be made of any suitable material, such as wood or aluminum. The rails are provided with interlockable means to permit the assembly of two or more units in vertical end-to-end relation, such means preferably comprising longitudinally extending locking grooves 14, 14 shaped to matingly receive a filler strip or spline in when the groove in a bottom rail is aligned with a groove in a top rail of an adjoining unit. The grooves may be dove-tail shaped or formed with an opening and outwardly tapered side walls terminating at a base which is wider than the opening.
To connect the units in side-to-side relationship, the
outer face of each side stile is formed to provide a straight section or portion 18 and a portion 20 inwardly sloped with respect thereto depth-Wise of the stile. As shown for example in Fig. 3, the straight portion 18 is substantially at a right angle with respect to the front face, desig-" nated 22, of the window unit, whereas the inwardly sloped portion 20 is inclined at an obtuse angle with respect to the parallel rear face, designated 24, of the window unit. Thus, each unit has a straight portion on the outer face of each stile extending rearwardly the same distance, approximately one-third to one-half the depth of the stile, with the straight portions on each side parallel to each other. The inclined or inwardly sloped portions 20 of each stile of a unit converge inwardly in a depth-wise direction or toward the rear side of the unit, these per-3 tions having equal length and being flat for abutting engagement with a similar portion of an adjoining unit. The straight portion 18 is provided with means 26 for interlockably connecting adjoining units when the straight portions of a pair of units are placed in abutting relationship. A second, and laterally spaced interlockable means 28 is provided in the inwardly sloped portion 20 to connect a pair of units when their inwardly sloped, portions are brought into abutting relationship. Prefer ably, and as illustrated, both interlockable means are in the form of longitudinally extending dove-tail locking grooves which, when aligned with each other, are adapted to receive a filler strip or spline 16 to connect the units.
Figs. 1, 3 and 5 illustrate a sectional window assembled of the described window units A to form a straight line type of window. The vertically arranged lights are provided by placing one unit on top of the other and .passing the splines 16 into the grooves 14, 14' of adjacent top and bottom rails. To connect the units in side-to-side relationship, the units are brought together with the straight portions 18 in abutting relationship and the locking grooves 26 in alignment. The splines 16 are then pushed into the aligned grooves to interlock or connect the units.

To construct a bowed or bay type window, as" show in Fig. 2, from the described window sections or-units A, the same procedure is followed for connecting the units in vertical relationship. To assemble the units in side-to-side relationship, the units are tilted, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the inwardly sloped portions 20 abut each other. A locking bar or spline 16 is inserted in the aligned locking grooves 28 to connect the units. The front or straight portions 18 being laterally spaced from each other at the front of the assembly, vertically extending cover strips or mullion casings 44 are placed over the openings. The covering strip is provided with laterally extending portions 46 to overlie the front faces of adjacent stiles and a central stud 48 is received within the opening between the stiles. To cover the seam or line where the units abut each other on the inside, vertically extending strips or inside mullion casings 50 may be secured thereover.

The. described window unitsmay be made to provide lights of any desired type. It is believed that the advantages of the described window; units will be. apparent from the foregoing detailed description. It will also be apparent that while the inventionvhas been shown and described in its preferred form, changesmay bemade without departing from the spirit and-scope of the. inventiomas sought to be defined inthe following claims.

Aawindow unit adapted to be joined to a unit of similar structure 'to provide a sectional window, said unit comprising top and bottom rails and side stiles, each of said side stiles having an outer face formed to provide a straight portion and a portion inwardly sloped with respect. thereto depthwise of the stile, means provided in the straight portion for interlockably connecting the stiles of a pair of units, and means provided in the inwardly sloped portion. for interlockably connecting the stiles of a pair of units, whereby a pair of unitsrnay be connected to each other by the interlockable means in their straight portions when abuttedto provide a straight line window or by the interlockable means in their inwardly sloped portions when abutted to provide a bowed '2. A'window unit adapted to bejoined .to a unit of similar structure to provide a sectional window,.said 'unit comprising top and bottomrails and side stiles, eachof said stiles having an outer face formed to provide a straight portion and a portion inwardly sloped with respect thereto depthwise ofthe stile, a longitudinally extending locking groove formed in said straight. portion and a longitudinally extending groove, spaced therefrom ina depth-wise direction, formed insaid inwardly sloped portion, whereby a pair of units may be connected to each other by a spline disposed inthe aligned locking grooves in their sn'aight portions when abutted to provide a straight-line window, or by a spline disposed in thealigned locking grooves in their inwardly sloped portions when abutted to providea bowed window. 7
4. A window unit asset forth in claim 3, wherein the 'top and bottom rails arev provided with means for interlockably connectingthe top and bottom rails of a pair of units. 7
5. A window unit'as set forth in claim 3, wherein the top and bottom rails are each provided with a longitudinally extending locking groove, whereby the top and bottom rails of a pair of units may be connected to each other by a spline.

A sectional window comprising a plurality of window units, each unit comprising top and bottom rails and side stiles, said side stiles each having an outer face formed to provide a straight portion and a portion inwardly sloping withrespecttheretodepth-wise of the stile, means provided in said straight portion for interlockably connecting the unit to'a'n adjoining unit, and means-provided in said inwardly sloped portion for interlockably connecting the unit to an adjoining unit, the connection of adjoiningunits by the interlockable means in their abutted straight portions providing a straight line window,
and the connection of'adjoining units by, the interlockable means in their abutted sloped portions providing a bowed window. 1

interlockably connecting the top and bottomv rails of a pair of units.

A sectional window comprising a plurality of win- 7 dow units, each unit comprising top and bottom rails and side-stiles, said side stiles each having an outer face formed to provide a. straight portion and a portioninwardly sloped with respect thereto depth-wise of the stile, a longitudinally extending locking groove formed in said straight portion and a longitudinally extending groove, spaced therefrom in a depth-wise direction,
