HUBERT C. HART, OF UNIONVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
BE-LT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,058, dated July 10, 1883.
Application filed May 18, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUBERT C. HART, of Unionville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved belt-fastener. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view, showing the ends of a belt connected by my improved fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to belt-fasteners; and it consists in the detailed construction of the fastener, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
My improved fastener consists of a flat plate or body, A, of square-or rectangular shape, and having by preference rounded corners a. This plate is cast with tongues B, which are bent or corrugated in the direction of their length, forming portions of a cylindensurface,
in the same manner as the tongues shown in the belt-fastener for whichLetters Patent of the United States No. 272,685 were granted to 1118 on the 20t-hday of February, 1883, and
(No model.)
ings, so that when the ends of the belt have beenfastened by bending down the tongues, as shown in Fig. 3, the points of opposite tongues will overlap each other, as shown at b in Fig. 3. When in this closed and lapped position, the concave sides of the ends of the teeth upon one end of the plate resting upon the convex sides of the ends of the opposite teeth will prevent their points from being displaced laterally, the points of the teeth on one side of the plate being confined within and by the cylindrical concavo convex ends of the teeth opposite.
In practice I prefer to cast my improved belt-fastener of ma1leable-iron but any other suitable metal may be used which possesses sufficient malleability to permit of the bending down of the concavo convex teeth or tongues without breaking them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an article of manufacture, the improvedbelt-fastener herein shown and described, conbonvexed in the direction of their length, and
disposed in two or more rows opposite to .one
"another, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoin g as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. HUBERT C. HART.
