.which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany-ing drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrica-l perspective view;

Like letters of reference indicate corresp ri `ding parts in the different figures of the My invention relates to that class of edgetrimmers for boots and shoes which are operated by power; and it consists in a noyel construction and arrangement of the parts, ashereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more desirable and effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of my improvement will be readily understood by ail conversant with such matters from the following description In the drawings, A represents the standard or body of the machine, B the head-stock, and C the main or driving pulley.

Journaled horizontally in parallelism with each other on the stock B there are three shafts, D E F, the shaft D carrying the pulleys O G H, the shaft E the pulley J, and the shaft F the pulley K. `The pulley G is belted to the pulley J, these pulleys being preferably of about the same size and considerably smaller ,than the pulley C, which is driven by the belt L from the pulley M ont-he shaft N, mounted in the lower part of the standard or body A.

The pulley H is of nearly the saine size as the pulley O, but much larger than the pulley K, to which it is belted, as shown in Fig. 1.

I Disposed on the outer end of the shaft D there is a cutter-head, l?, provided with four radial arms, Q., each of these arms carrying a cutter, R, secured to its rear side by the screw m. Each of the arms is curved and beaded or grooved at its outer end in accordance with the finish it is desired to give the edge of thev sole, and is provided with a shoulder or rabbet, S, against which the cutters R abut when in use, the cutters being each provided with a slot, d, for rendering them adjustable on the screws m.

The shaft E carries at its outer end awheel, 0, designed for use as a shank burnisher or polisher, its periphery being formed or grooved to correspond with the finish to be given that part of the sole. For trimming the shank, this wheel maybe substituted by one substantially the same as that on the shaft D, but having its `cutters and the ends 'of its radial arms formed to correspond with the form to be given the/edge of the shank.

Mounted on the shaft F there is a small wheel, T, provided with burrs or inclined radially-cutting or abrading flanges d on its in- This wheel has-a thin, but not a cutting, edge, and is designed for trimming downthe welts of boots and shoes, the outer face of the wheel resting against the upper, and the burrs being brought to bea-r on the welt when used, the edgeof the wheel passing in between the upper and welt as the wheel revolves.

The cutter P is designed as a plane or trimmer for the fore part of the sole, and one or more of the cutters R may be brought into use ata time, as desired, the cuttings or shavings taken from the sole passing out through the throats x under the cutters.

It will be obvious that the cutters may be adjusted to cut to any desired depth by means of the screws m, and that when they are all depressed .and brought. on a plane with the ends of the arms Q and secured in that position the cutter-head will thereby be converted into a polishing-wheel. outer edges of the cutters also act to burnish or polish the edge of the sole when the cutters are not depressed, and to such an extent that in most cases no subsequent polishing will be required; but in case it is required polishing- The arms Q and the v IOO nIo

My improvement has for one of its objects the production of an organized mechanism ern-- bodying in a compact form a welt-trimmer, a shank trimmer and polisher, and an edge trimmer and polisher for the fore part of the sole of the shoe, so that these'different devices'may be driven from one common source and used conveniently in succession in trimming and polishing the edges of boots and shoes and to` that end I have combined and arranged the Wheels'O P T and their actuating mechanism, as described and shown.

The shaft F is about one-half the length of the shaft D, and the shaft E about threequarters the length of the shaft D, their pulley ends tf g being arranged on the same line,

or in such a manner that their wheels O P T will not come opposite each other, and thereby interfere with the proper operations of the same. l f

The head-stock B is inclined toward the front of the machine at an angle of about thirty degrees, this feature rendering the wheels morel readily accessible when rss', ectively employed for the purposes for which they are designed. In the use of my improvement the machine is started up by applying power to the shaft Ni through the belt and pulley U, causing the pulleys M C G H J K and wheels or heads O T P all to revolve in the direction of the ar-v 4which are shaped to correspond with the iinish to be given the edge of the sole, and of a series of. cutters having arc-shaped outer surfaces attached'to said arms, said cutters being adjustable on a circle with the outer ends of said arms, substantially as described.
