2 Claims. (Cl. 128283) This invention relates to a colostomy bag, and especially to a readily replaceable bag for use by persons previously having a colostomy operation performed thereon so that a waste discharging opening is provided in the abdominal region.
Heretofore there have been some efforts made to provide colostomy bags or containers for use by persons having special discharging openings in the body. However, such previous apparatus has not been comfortable to wear, has been expensive to purchase, has been diflicult to clean or use, or has been objectionable for other reasons.
The general object of the present invention is to provide an improved type of a colostomy apparatus of the character indicated and wherein the apparatus is con venient and comfortable to wear.
A further object of the invention is to provide a relatively inexpensive colostomy apparatus of the class described wherein the containers can be individually and easily removed from the remainder of the apparatus and i be discarded, or cleaned for reuse, as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a soft, light Weight colostomy apparatus of the class described wherein a resilient annular plastic unit is the only portion of the apparatus forcibly brought into contact with the wearer.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will be made more apparent as the specification proceeds.
With reference to the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation of a person wearing the apparatus embodying the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an exploded elevation of the apparatus of Fig. 1 when removed from the wearer; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through the apparatus of the invention.
The invention in general relates to a colostomy container which comprises an elongate, flat, waterproof bag with a top opening therein, a belt for engaging a wearers body and having an opening therein, and a soft, flexible seal ring for engaging the opening in the belt and extending therethrough to be positioned by such belt against the wearers body. This seal ring has a neck thereon that engages the top opening in the bag for sealing the bag to the seal ring and aiding in positioning the waterproof bag.
Attention now is particularly directed to the details of the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawings, and the apparatus is indicated as a whole by the numeral 1, which apparatus is shown being worn by a person indicated at P in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This colostomy apparatus 1 includes a suitable belt 2 for extending around the wearers body and supporting the remainder of the apparatus as hereinafter described in detail.
The belt 2 may be made of uniform composition throughout, or it may have special reinforcing web material in an enlarged portion 2a thereof as indicated in the drawings. A conventional buckle 3 is provided on the belt 2 so that the belt can be drawn into snug engagement with the wearer. Preferably a soft fabric container or bag 2,808,830 Patented Oct. 8, 1957 2 a 4 is removably secured to the enlarged portionla of the belt by removable means, such as several two piece snaps 5, one portion of each of which issecured to the belt 2a and the other portion of each snap being secured tothe bag 4, as by sewing or otherwise securing them thereto. Fig. 2 of the drawing best shows that ahole 6 is provided in the belt section 2 1 and a hole 7 is provided in the bag 4 to bealigned with the hole 6 when the snaps 5 secure the 'bag to the belt.
The actual waste receiving receptacle provided in the apparatus of the invention comprises a waterproof bag or sack 8 of elongated, fiat form and which sack 8 has a neck bead 9 provided thereon outlining an opening in an upper portion thereof. Such neck head 9 is adapted to be aligned with the holes 6 and 7 when the sack 8 is received in the bag 4. A short, protruding neck portion 10 is provided to connect the neck bead 9 reinforcing the opening in the sack 8 to the remainder of the sack and to facilitate sealing the sack 8 to another member, as hereinafter described.
An important feature of the apparatus of the invention resides in a plastic, soft annular seal ring 11 that has a neck 12 extending from one side thereof. This neck 12 is shown as having a recess 13 provided in an outer portion thereof immediately adjacent the end of such neck portion whereas a separate air tight chamber 14 is provided in the ring 11 on an opposed portion thereto to the neck 12. The chamber 14 has atmospheric pressure therein and is made as a unitary casting by known methods and apparatus.
In assembly of the different components of the apparatus of the invention, the sack 8 is preferably first positioned in the soft fabric bag 4 and the bag 4 is then secured to the belt by the snaps 5. Then the ring 11 is secured to the sack 8 by pulling the neck portion 10 through the hole 6 and engaging the neck bead 9 of such sack with the recess 13 in the neck 12 of the ring 11. When assembled, the chamber carrying portion 14 of the ring 11 is adapted to be positioned against a wearers body and can be brought into tight relationship therewith by the belt 2.
The apparatus is relatively convenient and comfortable to Wear because of the soft flexible nature of the hollow ring 11. The ring 11 is made from easily worked plastic material, such as polyvinyl chloride, or polymers thereof, while it may be made from other suitable material, such as natural rubber, or rubber like materials. The sack 8 likewise may be made from any conventional material, such as natural rubber.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the apparatus of the invention provides a colostomy bag which can be easily positioned on a wearer and can be comfortably Worn even for long periods of time. The apparatus is easily assembled and disassembled for cleaning action, or for inserting another sack 8 into the apparatus, as desired. Hence it is considered that the objects of the invention have been achieved.
While one complete embodiment of the invention has been disclosed herein, it will be appreciated that modification of this particular embodiment of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A colostomy bag comprising a flexible waterproof bag having a neck bead thereon around an opening therein, a retainer sack in which said bag is positioned, belt means for engaging a person, means removably securing said retainer sack to said belt means, said belt means having an opening therein, and a soft flexible seal ring ring; said seal ring having an annular chamber on an outer portion thereof to press against a wearers body and seal thereagainst.
2. Atcolostomy bag comprising a flexible waterprooi bag havingameck bead thereon around an opening therein, a retainer sackin which said. bagtposi'tioned belt meansfor engaging. a person, nieans re movablytsecuring said retainer sackto said belt means, said belt means having an opening therein, and a sofLWaterproofflzdble seal. ring on one sideof saidlbelt means with aneek thereon extending througli and'pos'itioned' by the opening in said beIt means, said neck Having an edge flange engaging said neck bead to secure said bag to saidseal ring,
