BY I Ween/5V5 A. G. IRWIN Sept. 17, 1957 CAN CARTON 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Aug. 22, 1955 Aer/m2 a-zezw/v INVENTOR.
Arman aw nited States Patent CAN CARTON Arthur G. Irwin, Berkeley, Calif., asslgnor to Paperbox Corporation, Oakland, Calif., a corporation of California This application relates to a carton for carrying cans, bottles and the like.
Prior cartons of this type have been used. However, the prior cartons have all consisted of several pieces which must be glued or pasted together, or of a single blank which is provided with overlapping tabs which must be glued to other sections of the blank to complete the carton.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a carton for carrying cans, bottles or the like wherein the carton is stamped out in one operation with certain portions being die-cut and other portions scored for folding, and wherein the blank may subsequently be folded on the scored lines to form a carrying carton without requiring any gluing or pasting.
A preferred form of the invention is described in the following detailed specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the carton in its assembled relation ready to receive cans or bottles.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank used for forming the carton prior to the folding thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing one side only of the blank folded.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the completed carton.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein the same reference numerals are used to denote the same elements throughout the various views shown, generally indicates the blank used in forming the carton. The blank 10 comprises a center rectangular section 11. Two side sections 12 and 13 are joined to the center section 11 by two scored folding lines 14 and 15. Two bottom sections 16 and 17 are joined to the outer ends of the side sections 12 and 13, respectively, by two scored folding lines 18 and 19. The side sections 12 and 13 and the bottom sections 16 and 17 are all of the same Width and are approximately one-half the width of the center section 11.
Two central partition members 20 and 21 are joined to the outer edge of the bottom sections 16 and 17, respec tively, along scored folding lines 22 and 23. The central partition members 20 and 21 are approximately twice as wide as the side and bottom sections. The partition members are the same length as the bottom and side sections for a width approximately the same as said side and bottom sections and are then cut inwardly as indicated at 24 and 25, respectively, and are of shorter length from this point outwardly.
A die-cut line 26 bisects the center section 11 but does not extend all the way to either end of said section. Two U-shaped die- cut lines 27 and 28 are made with the central portion of each extending parallel to but spaced inwardly from the side edges of the central section 11, and
joined to each end of die-cut line 26. The legs of said U-shaped cuts lie on the folding lines 14 and 15 with the open ends of said U extending inwardly in the manner shown in Fig. 2. Two scored folding lines 29 and 30 join the open end of the U-shaped die-cuts to form four intermediate partitions 31, 32, 33 and 34. The partitions 31 and 33 are joined to a section 35 between the open ends of the die- cuts 27 and 28 by the folding lines 29 and 30, and the section 35 remains joined to the side section 12 by the portion of the folding line 14 between the open ends of the die- cuts 27 and 28. Similarly, the intermediate partitions 32 and 34 are joined to a section 36 along the folding lines 29 and 30, and the section 36 remains joined to the side section 13 by the portion of the folding line 15 between the open ends of the die- cuts 27 and 28.
An outwardly facing U-shaped die-cut 37 is formed in the central partition section 20 adjacent the outermost edge thereof. The outer ends of said die-cut 37 are joined by a scored folding line 38, thus forming a tab 39 adapted to be folded along the folding line 38 to provide a finger opening in the central partition section 20. Similarly, an outwardly facing U-shaped die-cut 40 is formed in the central partition section 21 and the outer ends thereof joined by a fol-ding line 41 forming a push-out tab 42.
In the assembly of the blank to form a carrying carton, the side section 12 is first folded downwardly relative to the central section 11 along the folding line 14. The bottom section 16 is then folded inwardly relative to the side sections 12 along the fol-ding line 18. The central partition 20 is then folded upwardly relative to the bottom section 16 along the folding line 22 and the upper end of the partition 20 inserted through the die-cut 26 until the shoulders 24 rest against the underside of the uncut portion of the central section 11. The section 35 is then folded downwardly along the folding line 14 until it is adjacent the inner surface of the side section 12. The intermediate partitions 31 and 33 are then folded inwardly along the folding lines 29 and 30 until they extend perpendicularly to the side section 12 and the central partition 20. When the above described operations have been completed, the carton will be in the condition illustrated in Fig. 3. The same operations are then performed on the other end of the blank 10 to complete the carton in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. As will be observed in Fig. 4, the intermediate partitions 31, 33 and 32, 34 extend from their adjacent side panels inwardly into engagement with the central partitions 20 and 21, thereby holding the central partitions together in an erect position.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in its construction by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described by invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cart-on for carrying cans, bottles, or the like comprising a unitary structure having side sections connected together solely by narrow strips located at the outer extremities of their upper edges, bottom sections extending inwardly toward each other from the lower edges of said side sections, central partitions extending upwardly from the meeting edges of said bottom sections in contiguous relation with each other between the strips connecting the upper edges of said side sections, the upper portions of said central partitions 'being notched inwardly to provide upwardly facing shoulders adjacent the underside of said connecting strips, the sections of material defined by the upper edges of said side sections and the inner edges of said strips and the central partitions being folded downwardly to form two flaps one adjacent the inner surface of each of said side sections, each of said flaps having a Width substantially equal to the inwardly extending dimension of one of said bottom sections, the ends of each of said flaps being severed from its associated side section along a dimension substantially equal to the inwardly extending dimen- 10 sion of one of said bottom sections and bent inwardiy at right angles thereto into engagement with said central partitions to form intermediate partitions between cans,
and registering die-cut flaps one adjacent the upper edge of each of said central partitions adapted to be pushed out and folded upwardly to provide finger openings for carrying said carton.
