The present invention relates to a container of the. type used in displayingand as-a carrier for. bottled beverages and the like; I
Containers formed of compressed paper stock, such as cardboard, shaped to Serve as a carrier for displaying and carrying soft drink bottles are well known and widely used. Such containers ordinarily are designed in two half sections, each half section being formed in the shapeiof a partially enclosed tray adapted to, receive several bottles. Each half section is formed with a carrying handle and the'two half sections are joined together and suitable reinforced, such-.as by metal reinforcing members, to provide a relatively sturdy structure which may be carried conveniently.
An important object of this invention is to provide a complete container or carrier for displaying and carrying bottled beverages and. the like which may be formed with a. minimum of waste'in a single die cutting and scoring operation from a sheet of compressed paper stock such as cardboard.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a container or carrier which may be manufactured inexpensively, and whichmay be shipped flat to the point of sale and assembled there in an easily executed folding operation; and which is sturdy and durable inconstruction without adding reinforcing members.
The container of th present invention is formed from a blank comprising, in generaL- an elongated generally rectangular sheet of relatively stiff foldable material, a slot extending transversely of said sheet about midway between the ends and stopping short of the sides thereof, a transverse opening on each side of said slot and adjacent thereto, a transverse generally rectangular panel defined by transverse and longitudinal scored lines between each opening and the. adjacent outer ends of said rectangular sheet of foldable material, anarrow portionyat each end of said foldable sheet of the blank being of a width only slightly less than the length of said transverse slot, a transverse opening in each of said narrow end portions, and scoring across each of said end portions connecting the sides of the sheet with openings in the ends of the blank.
An understanding of the manner in which the above and other objects of th invention are attained may be had from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a sheet of rela tively stiiT foldable material such as cardboard die out and scored ready for folding to form the carton or carrier of the present invention;
,Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carton formed from the sheet illustrated in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of a modification of the invention.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawing. In the drawing, the lines along whichthe blank is die cut areindicated by fulllines, and the lines along which the blank is scored are indicated by dotted lines.
The blank illustrated in Figure 1 is formed of relatively stiff foldable material, for example, strong compressed paper stock such as relatively heavy-cardboard and is of generally rectangular shape. The material may be coated or impregnated with wax or other suitable material to make it resistant to moisture.
A transverseslot i0 is cut in the blank midway of itsends. This-slot [0 extends towards but stops shortof the sides of the blank and is of a width. approximately twice the thickness of the material of which the blank is formed. The slot is defined by transverse die cut-lines joined by short longitudinal die cut lines.
A transverse opening I|-l la is formed on each side; of and adjacent to theslot Ill, being separated from the slot by arelatively narrow strip of material, ,Each opening l l -I la extends transversely of the blank towards but stopping short, of the, sides. Each opening is preferably .of. a width slightly greater than the diameter. of the contents, such as a soft drink bottle, which the carton. is designed to receive. Also, the ends of each opening are preferably rounded and one edge may be incompletely severed so that the .died out piece remains partially attached to the side of the container.
A rectangular shaped transverse panel I2--l2a is defined by transverse and longitudinal scored lines approximatelyvmidway between each opening ll-lla and the adjacent ends. A scored line I8 extends at an angle outwardly of the panel from each corner defined by the point of intersection of the transverse and longitudinal scored lines to the adjacent outer edge of the blank to permit folding and to provide reinforcements for the load carrying bottom trays when the container is set up, as described in detail hereinafter.
Each end portion l3-i3a of the blank is restricted in transverse section for a short distance of its length. These narrowed end portions are of a width only slightly less than the length of the transverse slot 10 and terminate preferably in rounded ends l4-l4a to form, with the transverse openings l5-l5a, carrying handles.
A transverse opening l5--l5a is provided in each narrowed end portion and is defined by an outer cut or scored line l9-l9a adjacent to the rounded end and is preferably formed in an arcuate curve connected at its ends to an inner scored line 20 20a which extends transversely of the blank and connects the sides of th sheet with the opening. The piece of material which is die cut to form each opening I5-I5a may be cut out completely and discarded at the time "of forming the blank, or it may be partially cut out and partially attached by merelyscoringalong one or more of its boundaryjlines. modification is preferred in that it permits the handle portions to be fplded over flat when assembled to provide a surface upon which another -container may be -superimposed to Save space and to provide an attractive display.
In the preferred embodiment of 'the invention illustrated in Figure 1, the upper surface of the blank is considered as forming the interior "surface of the finished container and the undersurface normally would be attractively'coloured and printed to display and advertise to their best advantage the particular wares in association with which it is 'to be used.
In assembling-the container, eachendof the blankis' folded along the transverse scoredline's forming the panels Ill-42a and the'end portions |3--|3a are passed through the slot l0 'to'form the handlesby meansof which the'contain'er'is carried. The transverse panels "'l2-'--l2a are 'folded along "their transverse and longitudinal scored lines to form the bottom load carrying trays,- and folded along the scored lines [8 to form the end reinforcing members.
-Prefer'ably, the container is -formed-of relativelystrong, rigid, paper board, wa'xed or impregnated or otherwise treated: against moisture absorption and of sufiicient"strength to carry safely the loads to which itis exposed. However, if desired, the trays formed bythe'p'anels I2-=l2a "articles to be carried, particularly if bottled beverages from a refrigerator are inserted into th ecarton and the cartonds formed of'materi'al which would tend to'absorb-moisture.
The container or carrier of the present invention has a numb r of irnportant*advantages.
This latter The blank may be formed in a'single operation, 30
from a single sheet of material, with 'a'niinimum of waste and-without the need 'of providing any extraneous reinforcing members, such as nor- 4 mally are required in similar articles of the prior art. It may be distributed to the user in sheet form and thus permits important savings in the cost of shipping to the point of sale, and is quickly and easily folded to form a container in which the wares may b prominently and attractively displayed and carried. In use, it is of a sturdy construction and is adapted to carry a relatively heavy load without inconvenience.
'It will be understood, of course, that modifications in the preferred embodiment of the inventi on described and illustrated herein may be "made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by "Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A container blank comprising an elongated generally rectangular sheet of relatively stiff f'o'lda'ble material, a slot extending transversely of said sheet about midway between the ends and stopping short of the sides thereof,'a transverse opening on each side'of said slotand'adjacent thereto, a transverse generally rectangular panel defined by transverse and longitudinal scored lines between each opening and the adjacent outer ends of said rectangular sheet of foldable material, a narrow portion at each-endof said allel sides, a slot extending transversely -of-said sheet about midway-between the ends and stopping short of the sides of said sheet, a transverse opening oneach'side of said slot and adjacent thereto, 'a transverse rectangular paneldefined by transverse and longitudinal scored lines between said openings and the ends 'of said sheet of'foldable material, scored lines extending in parallel "spaced relation across the width of the sheet of'materi'al and other scoredlines removed from but meeting the'first mentioned scored lines but being disposeddn'wardly'from the edges of the blank, and diagonal scored lines *extending from the edge of the blank at anangle and interceptingcthe first and second mentioned scored lines.
