TYPE-HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR HAND-STAMPS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,652, dated July 3, 1883..

v To all whom it may concern 4 Type-Holders for Self-Inking Hand Printing- Stamps; and I do hereby declare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referencebeing had to the'accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improvement in self-inking hand-stamps.

The invention consists in the construction of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The following description fully explains the nature of my improvement, and the manner in which I proceed to construct, apply, use,

and operate the same, the drawings herein referred to showing the device as applied to a selfinking hand-stamp of ordinary construction.

In the drawings referred to, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing the frame in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the type-holding box. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail of the plate for attaching the type-holding box.

A represents the frame of the stamp, B the inking-pad, and O the swinging plate or bed in which the type or printing matter is fixed.

D is a removable type-holding compartment, consisting simply of a frame or box of any convenient size, to receive and hold several lines of matter set up in type, and provided with means for locking this matter in place within it. Combined with this compartment is a means for fixing and securing it in place upon the bottom of the plate 0. The character of this fastening is such that the compartment can be readily detached and taken off at any time to alter the character of the stamp or to substitute another compartment with a different set and arrangement of characters.

I construct this attachment in the form of a box, as at D, Fig. 3, of proper depth to leave the printing-faces of the type projecting sufficiently above the sides, and with bindingscrews (1, taking through the sides to confine the type. Upon the bottom of the box I fix two buttons, F F, turning loosely in studs ff, and of a size and shape to enter slots 9 9, cut in the oscillating plate of the stamp. WVhen inserted through these slots, the buttons can be turned across on the top of the plate to lock the box to it. These buttons are placed on the bottom equidistant from the center of the box, and the two are sufficient to secure the attachment in place.

By' the application of my improvement the capacity of a selfinking hand-stamp can be greatly increased, and avariety of matter can be printed by means of it,which is not practicable under the ordinary construction.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination. with the oscillating dieplate of a self-inking hand-stamp, provided with the elongated openings 9, having enlarged centers formed in the body of the plate, of a detachable and removable type-holding .compartment, D, having a series of chambers, each holding a line of type, and a locking-screw for each chamber or line of type, said compartment D having studs f, which are provided with buttons F, of a form to pass through the elongated slots 9 in the plateC, and be turned thereupon to hold the type-compartment upon the plate, substantially as herein set forth.
