Description

SCREEN. I No. 280,614. Patented July. 3, 1883..
UNITE STATES PATENT QEEICE...
:OLIN. HARLEY, or BLUFFTON, INDIANA.
SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,614, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed February .13, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern WBe it known that I, OLIN HARLEY, of Bluffton, in the county of Wells and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ex "a'ct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view, showing my improved screen applied to'part of a window frame and tea sash. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the window-frame, and a top view of the screen. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper end of the ratchet-wheel, its bracket, and clamping-bar. Fig. 4 is an edge view of one of the slotted plates attached to the screen-strip. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the screen and a window-sash, and Fig.6 is an enlarged sectional view of the upper end of the roller.
This invention relates to window-screens, and especially to improvements on the screen for which Letters Patent were granted to me 011 the 4th day of July, 1882, No. 260,67 9. The following description, when taken in con v nection with the annexed drawings, will ena ble others skilled in the art to fully under stand my invention.
A designates part of a window-frame, B the lower sash, and C G the sash-strips.
D designates a vertical bar having one edge beveled at a, and E is the screen-roller on which the reticulated screen F is wound. The lower end of this roller is pivoted to a metal bracket, G, which is rigidly secured to the lower end of the bar D, and perforated to receive a centrally on-the bottom of a ratchet-wheel, H,
which wheel is further secured to the roller by means of nails or screws. The ratchet'wheel H is cast with a circular hub, d, on its bottom side, which is received in a circular hole made through a bracket, G, that is rigidly secured to the upper end of the bar D, and on top of the said wheel H a handle, H, is cast, by means of which the ratchet-wheel and its roller can be turned for winding up or unwinding the screen F.
a I designates a pawl which is pivoted on top of the bracket G, and adapted to engage with the teeth of ratchet-wheel H for preventing the screen F from unwinding when it is drawn taut across a window-sash.
J designates a verticallyslotted lip which is formed on the outer edge of the bracket G, and adapted to engage with a screw, 1), fixed in the sash-strip, and to serve, in connection with the bottom screw, 1), as the means for securing the bar D firmly in place.
J designates a clamping-strip which is pivoted to the bracket and provided with a knob handle. I pressing the screen F closely against the acute edge of the bar D, so that the screen will be close against the window-sash and exclude winged insects from the room when the window is up. At the lower end of this pivoted strip J is a notch, e, which allows the strip to clear the head of the screw I).
K designates a vertical strip, in the inner edge of which a kerf is made diagonally, as indicated at f, and in this kerf the left-hand edge of the screen F is secured. By means of this attachment of the screen to the strip K, in combination with the beveled edge of bar D, and the pivoted clamping-strip J, the screen (or netting) is held flatly and closely in contact with the window-sash.
L L are vertically-slotted plates, which are rigidly secured to the edge of the strip K, and adapted to receive through them the heads of screws f f, which are fixed into the left-hand window-strip C. By this simple means the strip K can be quickly and firmly secured to the window-strip G and detached from it at pleasure. I
N designates a narrow wooden strip secured 011 the upper rail of the lower sash, and
having a thin flexible strip, 9, of rubber or other suitable material, inserted into one edge. Thisstrip is used to prevent winged insects from getting between the two sashes when the lower sash is raised. It is used on the top of the lower sash when there are sashlocks, and on the bottom of the upper sash when there is a sashlock on the inside sash.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinatiomin a window-screen of This pivoted strip is designed for I the character described, of the slotted plates L L on the strip K, the slotted lip J, formed on the bracket G, the screw-fastening b, and the clamping-strip J, having a notch in its lower end, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with a window-screen roller, of beveled bar 1) and its brackets, clamp J", strip K, slotted plates L L, slotted lip J, formed on bracket G, ratehetavheel H, and
pawl I, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I 5 my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIN :IIARLEY.
