CAR-=COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,502, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed January 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER P. MossGRovE, of Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Ooupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide an automatic coupler for railroad-cars which shall be efficient, durable, and cheap, certain in its action, and applicable equally well to cars of different as well as to cars of the same height.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, the couplersbeing shown in coupled position, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the couplers.
The draw-heads A A are divided vertically at their outer ends to form the members a c, and these members are recessed at their upper edges to form the hooks b 1). Between the members a a of the draw-heads are pivoted upon the pins (1 d the tumbling-levers D D, and outside of these members, uponthe ends of the pins d d, are pivoted the connectingclevises B B. The tumbling-levers D D are formed with the arms f j, that project above the draw-heads, and with the heels j j, that normally project in front of the outer ends of the draw-heads, as clearly shown in the drawings.
In case the cars to which my invention may be applied are both of the same height, in order to couple the cars, one or other of the connectingclevises B is to be turned upward against the arm f of the tumbling-lever, as shown in Fig. 2. The other is to be turned down below the draw-head, as shown in Fig. 1. The clevises being in this position, the cars are simply to be backed together, which will bring the heels j j of the tumbling-levers D D together, which will give the arms ff a sudden movement toward'each other, which movement will throw the connecting-clevis forward over the hooks b b of the opposing car, and thus automatically make the connection.
I11 case the cars to be connected are not of the same height, the connecting-clevis of the higher car should be set up for coupling, since in that case, if the heels j j of the tumblinglevers do not come together, the heel of the highest lever will come against the end of the opposing draw-head and cause it to throw the connectingclevis forward and connect the cars.
To uncouple the cars the clevis which makes the connection is simply to be raised out or off from the hooks b b, which may be done by means of suitable levers or other connections extending to the top and sides of car, and these levers or connections may be arranged so that the clevises may be held up above the draw-heads of the opposing car, so that the cars may be uncoupled while in motion, if desired; or a movable pin may be inserted in the draw-head to hold up the clevis when it is not desired to couple the cars.
The couplings constructed in this manner are very cheap, durable, certain in action, perfectly automatic, will not come disconnected while the cars remain right side up, and are applicable to cars of any height.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In carcouplings, apivoted tumbler provided with an arm, f, extending up vertically through a slot in the draw-head to support a pivoted bail, as shown and described.
2. The tumbling-lever D, in combination with the draw-head A and hinged clevis B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The draw-head A, formed with the members a aand hooks I) b, and having the c011- necting-clevis B, in combination with the tumbling-lever D, formed with the arm f and heel j, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The tumbler of a car-coupling, pivoted between two fixed hooks on the front of drawhead and projecting beyond said hooks, where by when two cars come together said tumbler will be turned in the arc of a circle .to throw a pivoted bail forward, as and for the purpose specified.
