Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH GARTNER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND C. OTTO BAESE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,462, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed February 14, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH GliRTNER, of Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Look- Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved lock-hinge that can be conveniently operated so as to lock the shutter in open or closed position.
The invention consists of the sleeve of the lower shutter-hinge, that is provided with a grooved horizontal disk, and of a locking-bar that enters by a vertical. guide-pin into the sleeve of the shutter-hinge and engages by its horizontal portion one of the diametrical grooves of the disk. The inner end or the locking-bar is guided by slots along guide pins or grooves of the window-casing, so as to be raised clear of the disk, or lowered for engaging the same and lock thereby the shutter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved lockhinge, shown in position on a shutter. Figs. 2 and 3 represent, respectively, a side elevation and'a plan of the lock-hinge on a larger scale, and with the shutter shown, respectively, in open or closed position. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sections of the lower shutter-hinge and its fastening device, and Fig; 6 is a planof the shutter-sleeve and its grooved disk.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My improved lock-hinge is used in connection with the lower hinge, A, of the shutter, which is somewhat modified for this purpose. The guide-pin O of the lower shutter-hinge is for this purpose somewhat shortened, while the sleeve B is elongated, and provided at the upper end with a diametrically-grooved horizontal disk, B, the grooves of which intersect each other, preferably at right angles. A horizontal locking-bar, D, is guided by its enlarged T-shaped and slotted or recessed inner end, D, on fixed pins d d, the inner end, D, being provided with a button, 0, for raising or lowering the bar D on the guide-pins d d. The horizontal bar D is provided at its outerend with a downwardly-projecting guide-pin, f, that projects into the sleeve B until it forms contact with the guide-pin O of the shutter. A tongue, 9, extends in line with the lockingbar at both sides of the guide-pin f, and cor responds in depth and length to the grooves of the disk B, so as to engage the same and lock the shutter, either in closed or partlyopen or entirely-open position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
For the purpose of setting the shutter the horizontal bar D is first raised, so that its tongue 9 will clear the grooved disk B. The shutter may then be moved on its hinges until it arrives in the required position, when the horizontal bar is lowered again, so that the tongue 9 engages the corresponding groove of the disk B. In this manner a reliable and easilyoperated lock-hinge is furnished, that is not liable to get out of order, and that can be readily applied to new or old shutters. In the latter case simply a new sleeve-section for the lower shutter-hinge and a locking-bar are required.
The proper position of the locking-bar and its guidepins on the window-casing is readily ascertained by simply placing the short guide pin f and tongue 9 of the bar D into position in the sleeve B and grooved disk B, and then securing the guide-pins d and locking-bar to the window-casing.
I am aware that hinges provided with a disk having openings and a disk having sockets have been used; but these differ from my invention, as set forth in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A lock-hinge having one of its leaves provided with a sleeve, B, having a continuous opening from end to end, the upper end forming a disk, and having horizontal grooves, in combination with a T-shaped horizontal locking-bar, D, provided at its inner end, D, with slots or grooves, fixed pins (1 d, the tongue and guide-pin f at its outer end, and the pintle O on the other leaf, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing WltI16SS8S ADOLPH GABTNER.
