Description

(No Model.)
. Patented July 8,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT ries.
MARQUIS D. L. SVVANK AND JASPER T. THORNLEY, OF ANDERSON, IND.
STOP-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,413, dated July 3, 1883.
' Application filed October 7, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MARQUIS D. L. SWANK and JASPER T. THORNLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop or Relief Valves; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in a stop or relief valve; and the novelty c011- sists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed outin the claim.
The object of our invention is to provide a means by which, when the device is located in the center or at any convenient point on a pipe connected with a water-tank or steamboiler, it may be used both as a stop and re lief valve, either for the purpose of exhausting steam from the boiler or allowing water to flow from the tank, or vice versa, and it may be placed between the check-valve of a pump and the boiler or other similar apparatus where a stop or relief valve or cock is required to open and close pipes from opposite directions, but from only one direction at the same time,
The invention consists, essentially, in a cast ing, of proper metal, having vertical and horizontal passages which cross each other at right angles, and representing the junction of vertical and horizontal pipes, in which is placed the stop or relief plug or key. The top of the case containing said plug is provided with flanges on opposite sides for the purpose of securing a cap by two screws one on each side-the cap having a collar on its lower surface, which impinges on a corresponding collar of the plug or key, by means of which the plug may be lockedin any direction by tight ening the screws whereby thecap is secured to the case or main body of the device. The cap having an aperture to receive the plug, and two recesses on either side, opposite each other, of said aperture, is countersunk to in the cap, and has a shoulder, by means of which it is retained in position in the case, is tubular nearly two-thirds of its length, the outside tapers slightly downward to correspond with its case or casting, and has a recess formed upon one of its sides nearly to the center of its diameter, which connects with its tubular recess.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 repr'e sents a central vertical section, and Fig. 2 de tail perspective views, of our invention.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which. form a part of this specification.
A represents the main body or case, with collar a; G, the cap, provided with aperture 0, to correspond with journal 0 of a plug or key, and having apertures d d countersunk for heads of screws, and collar e on the lower surface.
D represents the entrance or exit from one direction, and E entrance or exit from another or opposite direction, and F outlet for the es cape of steam and water, or either.
G represents the-plug or key, having recessed opening 11 to correspond with apertures D and E in the case, to allow, when the recess is" at the outlet F, but effecti'lally stops and closes 5 the port E; and it may be changed to open the port E and close the port D, allowing water or steam to flow through the channel of exit F. This device cannot be used to close both ports D and F at the same time.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure In testimony whereof we affix oursignatures by Letters Patent, 1'sin presence of two witnesses.
Th 1i and K? 1 *in d ri d 2 3 f I be MARQUIS 1). L. SWANK. (onslsmng of a eastmg hm 111g ports 1), 1n, and TA SPFR THORNLFY F, the plug G, having recessed opening H, J J
and the cap 0, having collar (1, the whole 0011- \Vitnesses: strueted and zlrramgml as and 'lertxhe purposes THOMAS B. ORR, set forth. HOWELL 1). THOMPSON.
