PATENT OFFICE.
VILLAM SEATON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application tiled December 2G, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SEAToN, of London, England, have invented a new and useful Improved Rail-Joint, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain on 14th December, A. D. 1881, No. 5,465,) of which the following is a speciiication.
rllhis invention relates to the flat-bottom form of rails, and to fastenings and sleepers coinprising the permanent way of railways or tramways, and has for its object the simplification of the parts', dispensing with the use of iron chairs, so that fewer pieces are used with greater efficiency and economy than heretofore.
The accompanying drawings will serve to show how my invention may be best carried into effect, like letters referring to corresponding parts in all figures, Figure l being a cross-section, Fig. 2, a general plan; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of my permanent way- A is the rail; B, longitudinal sleeper; C, cross-sleeper, D, key; E, fishes, a, bolts; b, nuts. The'construction of the various parts will be well understood from the drawings,
Patent No. 280,406, dated July 3, 1883.
Patented in England December 14, 1881, No. 5,465.
the proportions being varied to suit the exigencies of each case.
It will be observed (Fi g. 3) that the ends of the rails are made each with a groove to receive the key D to prevent upward movement.; also, that a plate is used, placed underneath the rails; but this plate may be dispensed with. The clip-pieces or fishes E not only secure the rail ends by passing over their flanges,r but also embrace and keep in place the key D. As regards the bolts c, I in some cases prefer to make them of gun or galvanized metal to prevent rusting of the nuts and secure better adjustment.
I claim- The notched fiat-bottomed rails A and their key-piece D, combined with the clip-pieces E and fastenings a a, all substantially as illustrated, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
