Description

Aug. 27, 1957 J. R. HULL CARTRIDGE TRANSFER TooL Filed sept 1o. 1955- IN VEN TUF? United States Patent Office 2,803,985 Patented Aug. 27, 1957 CARTRIDGE TRANSFER TOUL John R. Hull, Kansas City, Mo., assigner to Remington Arms Company, Inc., Bridgeport, Conn., a corporation of Delaware Application September 10, 1953, Serial No. 379,353
1 Claim. (Cl. 86-47) This invention relates to a tool for supporting a cartridge clip of the type used in such military arms as the caliber .30 carbine, while the clip is being loaded with cartridges.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a plan view of a tool embodying the invention, a fragment of the cartridge clip to which it is applied being shown in broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool, a fragment of the cartridge clip being shown in broken lines.
Fig. 3 is a section substantially at 3 3 of Fig. 1, portions of the clip and a cartridge therein being shown in broken lines.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section of the tang.
The cartridge clip to which the tool of the present invention is applied is fully illustrated and described in the patent to Barker et al., No. 2,462,836. Said clip comprises a sheet metal track a adapted to hold a group of cartridges, say ten, in line. Within the track is a sheet metal spring member b provided at its ends with projecting tongues c adapted to be turned into positions parallel with the bodies of the endmost cartridges in the clip and thus retain the cartridges for the purpose of transportation. Operatively held upon the cartridge receiving track a is a widened sheet metal holding member d having side walls e and inturned lips f forming channels which are received in clip retaining members in the gun in which the clip is used.
Clips of this type are most conveniently loaded by supporting a set of cartridges in line and sliding the clip endwise over the cartridges thus supported, so that the rims of the several cartridges are engaged in the track member a. A convenient pallet for thus supporting the cartridges in compact rows of any desired number is shown in the patent to Vergobbi No. 2,389,285 November 20, 1945.
The present invention contemplates a tool adapted to be applied to the holder d of the clip to facilitate applying the clip to such a row of cartridges. The tool comprises a handle 10 embracing a tang or shank 11 which projects from one end of the handle. To cut-outs adjacent the projecting end of shank 11 are secured, by suitable means such as rivets 12, two prongs 13 which extend outwardly from the end of the shank 11 and are so spaced and of such dimensions as to be received in the channels formed by the side walls e and lips f of the holder d. When the tool is thus applied to a clip, the end of holder d cornes to rest against the end of the shank 11, and upon grasping the handle 10 the clip can be advanced over a pre-arranged and supported row of cartridges with great facility.
The end of shank 11 comprises a projecting pad 14, preferably of arcuate configuration, which is adapted to engage the tongue c of spring member b, which tongue as presented to the tool is in the plane of the back of said spring member. When cartridge receiving pressure is applied to the tool, the tongue c is: thereby turned to a position at right angles to the length of the row of cartridges, thus enabling the tongue to retain cartridges in place in the clip.
The tool has been found to be most useful in the clipping of caliber .30 carbine cartridges, both greatly increasing the speed of this operation and eliminating minor injuries to personnel engaged in this operation.
What is claimed is:
A hand tool for loading a cartridge clip comprising a cartridge receiving track, a displaceable tongue at the end of said track and substantially in the plane thereof and a widened holder including side walls adjacent one end of said track and laterally spaced therefrom, said tool comprising a handle, parallel prongs: extending from one end of said handle in spaced relation for entry in said widened holder between said side walls and said track of said cartridge clip, and a projecting pad formed on said handle between said prongs having a concave arcuate face whose axis of curvature is perpendicular to said prongs, said arcuate face being disposed to engage and displace said tongue from the plane of said track when a cartridge clip is thrust between said prongs.
