VAPOR-BATH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,348, dated July 3, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. CHADWIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Baths, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in vapor-baths, and has for its object to generate a dry vapor for the cure of various diseases. This object is attained by the means employed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a sectional elevation of the va por-generator and the cabinet for the reception of the patient. Fig. 2 is a plan of the top of the cabinet and part of the generator. Fig. 3 is a view taken from the under side of the generator. Fig. 4 is aplan of the alcohol-ves: sel. Fig. 5 is a plan of the vapor-generator and furnace.

O is a pipe from the top of the cabinet, and may connect with a chimney to carry off any superfluous vapor or product of combustion.

' D are the doors of the cabinet, which. may be double or single.

E is a piece of cloth or other suitable material, having a central opening and drawstrings S. It is secured to the lid B, and is intended to admit the head of the patient, and to be drawn closely about his neck in order to retain the medicated vapor withinthe cabinet.

P is a knob or handle to a sliding door or shutter, P, through which a hand of the attendant may be introduced to ascertain the condition of the patient.

R is a chair or stool placed on the floor of the cabinet, and may or may not be arranged to be adjusted to any convenient height for the comfort of the patient.

G is thegenerator, having ashort pipe, 9, at the top, through which medicated compounds may be introduced to the interior. It is penetrated vertically by the pipe J, which is connected with the horizontal pipe H, which latter communicates with the interior of the generator G by means of the vertical pipe H,

which extends from the top of the generator to the under side of the pipe H, so that any discharged.

K is a sheet-metal furnace, into the top of which is placed the generator G, and rests upon a narrow ledge, K, which extends around the inner periphery of the furnace, and just below the ledge K are draft-holes W. The furnace is entirely open at the bottom, but rests upon a piece of sheet metal, N. The door d gives access to the interior.

M is a cup or vessel to hold water.

L is ashallow vessel, of sheet metal or other suitable material, adapted to 7 hold alcohol. It is placed on top of the cup M, the latter being previously filled with water. The object of making the vessel L of inverted conical shape is to increase the surface of that part of the vessel in contact with the water. The water is to reduce the temperature of the vessel containing the burning alcohol as much as possible.

To use the bath,thegenerator G is supplied through the mouth gwith the medicated compound, the cup M is filled with water, the vessel L is placed thereon and filled with alcohol, the chair R is adjusted to the proper height, thepatient is seated thereon, the doors D are closed, the lid B is lowered so that the patients head may pass through the central opening in the cloth E. This is then adjusted about his neck, in order to retain the vapors within the cabinet. Fire is applied to the alcohol, the blaze from which passes upward through pipe J, and heats the contents of the generator, as well as drying the vapors arising and passing through the pipes H H and into the cabi net A. a l

Having described my invention, What I desire to secure by Letters Patent and to claim 1. The combination of cabinet A with the generator. G, having vertical flue J, horizontal pipe H, and pipe H, furnace K, cup M, and open vessel L, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of generator G, having vertical flue J, horizontal pipe H, and pipe H, with furnace K, cup M, and open vessel L, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

IO 3. In a vapor-bath, the vessel L,of inverted conical shape, in combination with cup M, adapted to hold water, as described, and for the purposes set forth.'
