UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-Ion.
WINDFIELD S. OANADAY, OF NEW CASTLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOB OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN NELSON WATKINS, OF SAME PLACE.
. BALANCED VALV'E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.,280,346, dated July 3, 1883.
Application ina April 4,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WINDFIELD S. CANADAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Balanced Valve, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to balanced valves for steam-engines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the valve and valve-chest; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the valve detached, illustrat ing its construction.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates the steamchest; B, the valve, and C the valve-stem, which is provided at its front end with a rectangular frame, D, sliding in a-snitable boxing, E, in which the main shaft F is transversely mounted, said main shaft being incloscd by the frame D.
G is a disk mounted upon the main shaft, and having an eccentric stud 01' tooth, H, engaging notches or recesses I, I in the upper and lower sides of the frame D. It will be seen from this that when the main shaft rcvolves it serves to reciprocate the frame D, carrying the valve-stem and the valve, which latter is thereby properly reciprocated in the valve-box or steam-chest. A crank upon the main shaft is connected, in the usual manner,
with the piston-stem of the cylinder, which,
however, is not shown in the drawings.
The valve B consists of a rectangular base or body, J, fitted between the sides of the steamchest in which it slides, and having a longitudinal opening, K, in which is fitted a sleeve, L, serving to connect with the body J a top T T are ports in the bottom of the steamchest connecting the same with the ends of the cylinder.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. Steam is admitted through the cen tral longitudinal opening in the valve, and finds its way from the cylinder to the exhaustpipe through the grooves in the sides of the valve-body.
The construction is simple, and I have found that by this invention steam is greatly economized.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of-the United States- The combination, with the steam-chest having steam-pipe R in its top and exhaust-pipe- S in one side, of the valve B,consisting of body J, having grooves Q Q in its sides, a groove in its top or upper face, and a longitudinal opening, K, the sleeve L, the top plate or cap, M, connected by said sleeve with the body J, and the interposed packing N, all arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
