UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. TATEUM, OF WOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 280,261, dated June 26, 1883.
' Application filed February 24, 1 883. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern Be it known that l, THOMAS E. TATEUM, acitizen of the United States, resident at Worcester, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
.to letters or figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a cross-section, and Fig. 5 is an end view.
This invention has relation to door-securers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the handle portion of this device, which is grooved from end to end, or otherwise formed by bolting side walls to a back piece to provide a longitudinal channel-recess, b, for the reception of the blade or blades. Perf0rations 0 are made through the end of the handle, and also in the middle portion, as at d.
Formed on that end of the handle which is opposite to the perforated end. is a laterally-extending spur, e, the bearing-surface of which is broad transversely and fiush with the end of the handle. The main blade 9 is of greater length than the'handle, and is seated in the recess 1) thereof, being connected thereto by a rivet, bolt, or screw. The blade 9 is' slotted or grooved in the longitudinal direction, as indicated at h, toreceive or engage the fastening-screw k, which passes through the threaded aperture d of the handle, so that the handle can slide on the blade. At the end of the blade 9 is formed a spur, Z, which projects laterally in the opposite direction to the lateral spur-bearing of the handle, the breadth of the spur Z being transverse to the length of the blade. A perforation, m, is provided in the head of the blade for the passage of a pin or bolt, 1), which is usually made removable, so that the handle may be either pivoted to the end of the blade or may constitute a slide thereon.
8 represents a filling-blade, which is usually seated in the handle alongside the main blade, and next to its plane side. This blade may be of steel and provided with a cutting-edge, if thought desirable.
In operating the device the fastening-screw is loosened, so that the blades maybe opened. Then the spurred blade is put against the easing, with its spur in contact therewith, the door closed, driving the spur into the casing, and the handle then closed on the blade, so that its spur-bearing will abut against the door. The fastening-screw is then tightened, locking the handle and blade together. If the crevice between the edge of the door and its seat in the casing is wide, the supplementary or filling blade .9 is inserted alongside the spurred blade.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A door-securer consisting of a handle havin g a longitudinal recess, and a fastening-screw passing through a perforation in its wall, a longitudinally slotted'or grooved blade having a lateral spur at its end, and a supplementary blade arranged alongside the spurred blade in the handle-recess, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in .presence of two witnesses.
