Be it known that we, PHILIP H. STEIN and JAMES TAMS, citizens of the U residing, respectively, at Austin, in the State of Texas, and at Trenton, in the State of New Jersey, have jointly invented a new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Squeezers, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in fruit-squeezers, and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

A A2 represent a f pair of ordinary wooden pressing-jaws hinged together at one end by means Qf' dat links z and rpintle-rodS-.z/ y2 in a customary way, and having at their opposite' extremities'lever-handles a' m2, integral therewith, as means for operating them.

B B2 represent fiat face-plates, preferably of' porcelain, or of cast-iron enameled with p'orcelain, held in transverse dovetailwseats w '202, in the faces of the respective pressing-jaws, by means of clamping-screws v v2, and supported centrally by set-screws u a2, working in holes bored therefor in the respective jaws. Said face-plates B B2 are molded with imperforate fiat 7 pressing-surfaces, 4which are respectively cameo and intaglio,composed of a group of shallow vertical flutes, t t2, and two groups of inclined flutes, s s 32.82, in each face-plate. These flutes form shallow protuberances andV depressions which keep the fruit from slipping when squeezed, and direct the juice to a central opening, 1'-, formed at the lower edge of the squeezer, so that it may all be readily caught by a goblet or the like, while they do not interfere with closing the jaws upon even a thin slice of fruit, so as to express all its juice, and they facilitate the`separa`tion of the refuse and the thorough cleansing of the suri faces. The squeezer` is held, with the open edge downward, over a receptacle for the juice, and sufficient pressure is readily applied to nited States,

the jaws in the ordinary way. The hard noncorrodible and non absorbent material of which the face-plates or their enamel is com- 5` posed preserves the form of the pressing-surfaces and protects the same against the acid of the fruit, besides facilitating the cleansing operation, and, owing to the said mode of attaching the face-plates to the jaws, they may 6( be readily separated to facilitate thorough cleansing, while the set-screws a ai preclude subjecting the face-plates to abreaking sti-ain, besides aiding to tighten the latter.

C represents a top shield, in the form of a rigid lip, at the upper edge of the faceplate B, adapted to close into the recess 102 above lthe face-plate B2, as shown in Fig. V5, and to prevent the escape of the juice of the fruit at top. This shield, it will be observed, is inte- 7c gral with the said face-plate B, so as to be molded of or enameled with the saine non-corf-lo'dible and non-absorbent material as the lat-v ter, and is attached therewith to the pressingj aw A without forming additional joints. In- 7 5 Gtegral end Shields, substantially like the top shield, C, may be formed on either or both face-plates to prevent the escape of juice at ythe ends of the jaws.

le are aware that removable face-plates 8o have heretofore been used,v and we are also aware that the upper jaws have been provided with downwardly-projecting flanges to cover the upper edges of the lower jaws when the said jaws are brought togethem'and we fore do not claim such inventions.

Ve claim as our joint invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a fruit-squeezer having fiat or nearly flat pressing-surfaces, the combination of jaws 9o having lever-handles integral therewith, and face-plates held in transverse dovetail seats in the faces of the respective jaws by means of clamping-screws, and supported therein by central set screws, substantially as herein 495 speci-lied.
